Maybe a mate swears by saffron for his mood, or you have seen it sold to men as a natural libido booster. What do the saffron benefits for male health actually come down to? Six studies, most of them small, with a few real signals and a couple of honest nulls that most articles skip.
This guide lays those studies out side by side, explains what each one measured, and shows how the doses compare with a single capsule. For the full brand comparison, see our guide to the best saffron supplements in Australia.
Key takeaways
- The saffron benefits for male health with trial support are mood and stress response, exercise enjoyment, and sexual function in men whose problems came from an antidepressant.
- Trials used 28 to 30 mg of extract a day; one Eternal Elixir capsule gives 30 mg of affron®, at about 56 cents a day.
- Semen quality did not change in a 26-week trial, testosterone was not measured, and erection problems need a GP visit first.

Saffron Benefits for Male Health at a Glance
Saffron is the dried stigma of the Crocus sativus flower. Supplement studies use concentrated extracts measured in milligrams, not the threads you cook with. Most saffron research has been done in mixed groups of men and women, looking at mood and stress. Only a handful of trials recruited men alone or reported men separately.
Those trials looked at four things: how men felt during exercise, how they handled a stress test, sexual function, and semen quality. The first three moved in the right direction in at least one study. Semen quality did not move at all. That split is the most useful thing to know before you spend money on saffron as a man.
Two of the sources were funded by, or written by staff of, the companies that make the extracts tested. The Perth exercise trial was funded by the maker of affron®, the extract in Eternal Elixir capsules, and the authors declared it. The sexual function and semen trials were run independently in Iran.
The Men’s Saffron Scorecard: Every Trial, Including the Nulls
Here is every study we verified for this guide, with the dose, the length and the result. The last column includes what did not change, which is the part most saffron articles for men leave out.
| Outcome | Study | Who took part | Daily dose and length | What the trial found |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise enjoyment and heart rate variability | Lopresti and Smith 2022, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition | 62 recreationally active adults in Perth, results split by sex | affron® 28 mg a day for 6 weeks | No difference for the group as a whole. Men on saffron gained more exercise enjoyment and heart rate variability than men on placebo; women showed no change |
| Response to a stress test | Pouchieu 2023, Nutrients | 19 healthy men aged 18 to 25, crossover | One 30 mg dose of Safr’Inside™ (a different extract) | Lower self-rated stress and anxiety, and a later peak in salivary cortisol, compared with placebo |
| Sexual function while on an antidepressant | Modabbernia 2012, Psychopharmacology | 36 married men with stable depression and sexual side effects (30 finished) | 15 mg twice a day for 4 weeks | Erectile function, intercourse satisfaction and total score improved more than placebo. Desire, orgasm and overall satisfaction did not differ |
| Erection quality, no placebo group | Shamsa 2009, Phytomedicine | 20 men with erection problems | 200 mg a day for 10 days | Total questionnaire score rose from 22 to 39. Open label, tiny, and about seven times the usual dose |
| Semen quality | Safarinejad 2011, Phytotherapy Research | 260 men with low sperm count, motility and normal shape | 60 mg a day for 26 weeks | No change in sperm count, motility, shape or seminal antioxidant capacity compared with placebo |
| Pooled sexual function and semen results | Maleki-Saghooni 2018, Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine | 6 trials reviewed, 3 pooled for sexual function | Varied by trial | Positive pooled effect on every domain of the erectile function questionnaire; semen results contradictory; the authors flag methodological flaws |
Read it as a map rather than a verdict. Each row is one study, most with fewer than 70 men, and they used different extracts, questionnaires and lengths. A consistent direction across small trials is worth noting. It is not the same as proof.

Mood, Stress and Training: The Everyday Case for Saffron
The most practical saffron benefits for male health sit in mood and stress, because that is where most of the wider research lies. Our review of the five mood trials in adults covers the mixed-sex evidence in detail. Two studies add something specific to men.
In a six-week Perth trial in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 62 adults who exercised regularly took 28 mg of affron® or a placebo. Across the whole group nothing differed. When the researchers split results by sex, the men taking saffron reported more enjoyment of exercise and showed higher heart rate variability, a marker of recovery measured with a wrist-worn tracker. The women did not. The split was not the main question of the trial, so it needs repeating before anyone leans on it.
A 2023 crossover study in Nutrients gave 19 healthy men aged 18 to 25 a single 30 mg dose of a different saffron extract, then put them through a laboratory stress test. Compared with placebo, they rated themselves less stressed and anxious, and their salivary cortisol peaked later. The study was small, used one dose, and was run by the company that makes that extract.
Put together, the signal for men is about how you feel and recover rather than how much you lift. Nobody has shown saffron builds muscle or strength.
Sexual Function: What the Trials Tested and What They Did Not
This is where saffron is most heavily marketed to men, and where the details matter most.
The 2012 placebo-controlled trial
A double-blind trial in Psychopharmacology recruited 36 married men whose depression was stable on an antidepressant but who had sexual side effects from it. They took 15 mg of saffron twice a day or a placebo for four weeks. Erectile function and intercourse satisfaction scores improved more on saffron, and 60% of the saffron group reached a normal erectile function score against 7% on placebo. Sexual desire, orgasm and overall satisfaction did not differ between the groups.
So the best trial in men tested a narrow situation: sexual side effects of one medicine. It did not test men in general, and it found no change in libido.
The 2009 pilot and the 2018 review
A 2009 pilot study in Phytomedicine gave 20 men 200 mg of saffron each morning for ten days, with no placebo group. Questionnaire scores and overnight erection measures improved. Without a comparison group, and at roughly seven times the usual dose, it can only point to a question. A 2018 systematic review in the Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine pooled three trials and found a positive effect across every domain of the questionnaire, while warning about methodological flaws and wide differences between studies.
If you have ongoing erection problems, see your GP before trying any supplement. They can be an early sign of a heart or blood vessel problem that is worth catching.
Semen Quality and Testosterone: Where Saffron Falls Short
The largest and longest saffron trial in men is also its clearest null result. In a 26-week study in Phytotherapy Research, 260 men with low sperm count, motility and normal shape took 60 mg of saffron a day or a placebo. Sperm count, motility, shape and the antioxidant capacity of seminal fluid were no different at the end. The 2018 review called the semen evidence contradictory.
Testosterone is the other gap. None of the human trials in this guide measured it, so saffron should not be bought as a testosterone product. If that is your goal, Eternal Elixir’s Tongkat Ali 200:1 Extract is the herb men in Australia more often look at, and its research is a separate story.
How Men Can Take Saffron: Dose, Timing and Cost
The dose question has a clear answer from the trials. Here is how the amounts tested compare with a single 30 mg capsule.
| Daily amount | Capsules of a 30 mg product | Where it was tested | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 to 30 mg | 1 | Exercise, stress and sexual function trials | The amount the useful trials used |
| 60 mg | 2 | 26-week semen trial | More saffron, and still no effect on that outcome |
| 200 mg | About 7 | 10-day open pilot with no placebo | Not a dose we recommend; side effects climb at this level |
Eternal Elixir Saffron Extract 30mg gives 30 mg of affron® per capsule, so one a day with a meal matches the studies that found an effect. Our explainer on affron® standardisation shows why a measured extract matters more than a large milligram number on a cheaper label.
A bottle costs $49.99 for 90 capsules, about 56 cents a day, and lasts three months. The trials in men ran four to six weeks, so one bottle gives you a fair trial with room to spare. Try it for at least four weeks before you judge it, and change one thing at a time so you know what is working.
Men over 40 often run saffron alongside a broader longevity routine. That is a different goal: Eternal Elixir’s NMN 500mg targets NAD+ support, and our list of the best supplements for men over 40 sets out where each one fits.
Who should skip saffron or ask first
- Men on prescription medicine for mood. The 2012 trial was supervised by doctors. Saffron appears to act on similar brain chemicals, so do not add it to an antidepressant without checking with your prescriber.
- Men with erection problems that have not been assessed. See your GP first; the cause matters more than the supplement.
- Anyone planning much higher amounts. Side effects become more common at 200 mg a day and above.
- Men trying to conceive with a partner. Saffron did not improve semen quality, so it is not a substitute for a fertility assessment.
At 28 to 30 mg a day, side effects in the trials were mild and similar to placebo. Order a bottle once you have checked the points above. Our general guide to saffron supplement benefits covers the mixed-sex research on sleep and stress, and the companion guide to saffron for women shows how the evidence differs by sex.
Saffron Benefits for Male Health: Your Questions
How much saffron should a man take?
The trials that found changes in men used 28 to 30 mg of extract a day, either as one dose or as 15 mg twice a day. That matches one Eternal Elixir capsule. Doubling to 60 mg did not help semen quality in the longest trial, and amounts of 200 mg or more were only tested briefly without a placebo group.
How to eat saffron for men?
Cooking saffron is fine for flavour, but a pinch of threads gives an unknown and usually much smaller amount of the compounds studied. The trials used measured extract capsules taken daily with water. If you want the studied amount, take one 30 mg capsule with a meal at the same time each day for at least four to six weeks.
Is saffron good for your prostate?
None of the human trials in this guide looked at the prostate, so there is no evidence to say saffron supports prostate health. Urinary changes or prostate concerns should be checked by your GP rather than managed with a supplement.
What organs is saffron good for?
Most saffron research in people looks at the brain: mood, stress response and sleep. The trials in men add heart rate variability during training and sexual function. Saffron has not been shown to do anything specific for the liver, kidneys or prostate in human studies, and our guide to saffron side effects covers what to watch at higher amounts.
Does saffron increase testosterone?
The human trials covered here did not measure testosterone, so there is no basis for calling saffron a testosterone booster. Men interested in that area usually look at a different herb; our guide to tongkat ali explains what that research does and does not show.
