Does tallow balm work? What the research and dermatologists say

This is the part most tallow skincare brands skip. There are no published controlled trials of any tallow balm on human skin, including ours. Here is what the evidence does and doesn’t support.

The research on tallow itself is thin. In a 2024 scoping review, researchers screened 147 studies on tallow and skin and found 19 that met their criteria. These were comparative, basic science and animal studies. The authors found some support for tallow’s suitability for skin but said more research is needed on tallow as a cosmetic in humans, and they found the most disagreement between sources on side effects (Russell et al., 2024).

What dermatologists say. In the same ABC report, Gold Coast dermatologist Dr Michael Freeman said tallow’s stearic acid and oleic acid have skin-softening and hydrating properties, but “you wouldn’t want to use beef tallow as a raw product”. Dr Tan described tallow as “a natural emollient, meaning it helps to lock in moisture”, and warned that raw tallow “can have impurities or contaminants that may cause irritation or infection” (ABC News, 2025). That is a reason to buy a balm from a maker that renders and jars it properly rather than using kitchen tallow on your face.

Grass-fed tallow has a different fat profile. A review of three decades of beef research found that grass-based diets raise the levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), its precursor trans-vaccenic acid and omega-3 fats in beef fat, and raise the precursors of vitamins A and E. Grass-finished fat can look yellowish because of its carotenoid content (Daley et al., 2010). Those studies looked at beef as food. Nobody has tested whether those differences change how a balm performs on skin.

Not every natural oil suits skin. In a UK study, 19 adult volunteers applied six drops of olive oil to one forearm twice a day. After four weeks, olive oil had reduced the integrity of the skin’s outer layer and caused mild redness, while sunflower seed oil did not (Danby et al., 2013). That study tested neat olive oil, not a balm, so it tells you nothing about any product in our table. It is still a useful reminder that “natural” doesn’t guarantee a good match for your skin, and a patch test is worth doing with any new balm.

What hasn’t been shown:

• that tallow balm works better than a standard moisturiser
• that grass-fed tallow performs differently on skin from grain-fed tallow
• that the vitamins in tallow reach the skin in useful amounts from a balm (no balm in our table states vitamin amounts on its label).

Grass-fed or grass-finished. “Grass-fed” means the cattle ate pasture for at least part of their lives. “Grass-finished” (or “grass-fed and finished”) means they stayed on pasture right up to slaughter.
