Quick answer: Expect oral glutathione to take weeks to months to work, not days, so plan a run at least three months long. In the longest human trial, blood glutathione was higher than baseline after one month of daily use and kept rising to six months, when the 1,000mg dose had lifted levels in red cells, plasma and lymphocytes by 30 to 35%. A single dose barely registers in the blood, and a four-week trial at 1,000mg a day found no change against placebo, so judge it at three months, not one. Our pick for that three-month run is Eternal Elixir Reduced L-Glutathione 2000mg: 1,000mg per capsule, 90 capsules for $39.99, sent from Sydney within 24 hours.
Eternal Elixir makes Reduced L-Glutathione 2000mg, and it is our pick in this guide, so weigh our view with that in mind. Every study below is listed in full at the end, and competitor prices were read from each product’s own page in September 2026.

How long does glutathione take to work? The realistic timeline
Glutathione is an antioxidant your cells make from three amino acids. When you swallow it, enzymes in the gut and liver break much of it down, so body stores build slowly. Here is what human studies found at each point.
| Time on glutathione | What human studies found |
|---|---|
| First few hours | After a single dose of about 3,000mg, plasma glutathione did not rise significantly over the next four and a half hours in 7 healthy volunteers (Witschi, 1992). A 2026 study found a single 1,000mg liposomal dose reached a peak about six times higher than plain glutathione (Prasad, 2026). |
| Weeks 1 and 2 | On liposomal glutathione at 500mg or 1,000mg a day, blood levels were up after one week and peaked at two weeks, 40% higher in whole blood (Sinha, 2018). That study had 12 people and no placebo group. |
| Week 4 | Plain glutathione at 1,000mg a day did not change red-cell glutathione or oxidative stress markers compared with placebo in 40 healthy adults (Allen and Bradley, 2011). |
| Month 1 | In the six-month trial, blood glutathione was higher than baseline at one month at both 250mg and 1,000mg a day (Richie, 2015). |
| Month 3 | Natural killer cell activity, a lab measure of one type of immune cell, was more than twice placebo in the 1,000mg group (Richie, 2015). A 12-week skin trial at 250mg a day found fewer wrinkles than placebo at some of the sites measured (Weschawalit, 2017). |
| Month 6 | At 1,000mg a day, glutathione was 30 to 35% higher in red cells, plasma and lymphocytes. At 250mg the rise was smaller: 17% in whole blood and 29% in red cells (Richie, 2015). |
| One month after stopping | Levels were back to baseline (Richie, 2015). |
So the realistic answer is one to three months for blood levels to build and six months for the largest rise measured. Anything you might notice, such as a change in your skin, sits at the slow end of that range. If you want a quick fix, glutathione is the wrong supplement.
Add Reduced L-Glutathione to cart · $39.99What the research shows about glutathione’s time course
The six-month trial by Richie and colleagues at Penn State is the one to anchor on. It was randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled, with 54 non-smoking adults taking 250mg or 1,000mg of reduced glutathione a day. Glutathione in blood rose at one, three and six months, and the gains were mostly larger at the higher dose and grew with time. By six months the ratio of used (oxidised) to fresh (reduced) glutathione in whole blood had fallen in both dose groups, which the authors read as less oxidative stress.
The four-week trial is the strongest evidence against expecting fast results. Allen and Bradley gave 40 healthy adults 500mg twice a day or placebo. After four weeks, red-cell glutathione and two urine markers of oxidative damage were unchanged. The two trials can sit together: Richie compared each group with its own starting level and saw the gains keep growing to six months, while Allen compared glutathione with placebo at four weeks. Either way, one month is too short to judge plain glutathione.
Liposomal glutathione wraps the molecule in a fat-based shell, and it looks faster in small studies. The Penn State pilot saw blood levels rise within a week, but it had 12 people, no placebo group, and was funded by a company that sells liposomal glutathione. The 2026 single-dose study had six people per group, was open-label, and every author listed the same company affiliation. Both are early signals rather than proof. Our comparison of liposomal and reduced L-glutathione weighs the extra cost against the absorption case.
Skin results take the longest to read. In a Bangkok trial, 60 medical students took 500mg a day or placebo for four weeks, and melanin readings fell at all six skin sites measured, with a significant difference from placebo at two of them (Arjinpathana, 2012). A 12-week trial in 60 healthy women aged 20 to 50, at 250mg a day, found melanin readings tended to be lower than placebo but not significantly so overall, while wrinkle measures were lower at some sites (Weschawalit, 2017). Our guide to glutathione and skin tone covers those trials in more detail.
Exercise is the one area with a two-week result. In a crossover study, 8 healthy men took 1,000mg a day or placebo for two weeks and then cycled for an hour. Blood lactate rose less, and fatigue scores after exercise were lower, on glutathione (Aoi, 2015). The study was small and part-funded by KOHJIN Life Sciences, whose staff were co-authors, so treat it as a lead.
Start a 12-week run of Reduced L-Glutathione · $39.99Our serve compared with the trial doses
Our label says two capsules daily on an empty stomach, which is 2,000mg. That is twice the highest dose in the six-month trial. We found no randomised trial of 2,000mg a day in healthy adults, so nobody has shown that it works faster than 1,000mg. One capsule gives 1,000mg, the higher dose from that trial.
That leaves two honest ways to run a three-month trial. One capsule a day keeps you inside the tested range, and a bottle then lasts 90 days at $0.44 a day. The two-capsule label serve costs $0.89 a day, and a bottle lasts 45 days. Ask your doctor or pharmacist which suits you, especially if you take other medicines. Our glutathione dosage guide sets out every trial dose side by side.
What affects how fast glutathione works
Two people can start the same bottle on the same day and see different results. These are the factors with some evidence behind them.
The form you choose
Reduced L-glutathione is the form the six-month trial used, and it is the form in our capsules. Liposomal products reached the blood faster in the small studies above, but they usually carry far less glutathione per capsule. Precursors are a third route. In a study of 8 older adults with no placebo group, two weeks of the amino acids cysteine and glycine lifted red-cell glutathione by 94.6% (Sekhar, 2011). NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is a common cysteine supplement, and our comparison of glutathione and NAC for liver support explains how the two differ.
Your dose
In the six-month trial the rises were mostly bigger at 1,000mg than at 250mg. In the liposomal pilot, 500mg and 1,000mg gave similar results, though 12 people were too few to tell the doses apart. No trial we found showed that a higher dose shortens the first month.
Taking it every day
Levels were back to baseline a month after people stopped in the six-month trial. Missed weeks cost you progress, so a steady daily habit matters more than the size of any single dose.
Your age and starting level
Older adults tend to start lower. In the 2011 study, red-cell glutathione in 8 older adults was about half that of 8 younger adults (1.12 against 2.08 mmol/L), because they made it more slowly. No trial has tested whether a low starting level makes oral glutathione work faster, so treat that claim as a guess.
How long does glutathione take to work for specific goals
| Goal | When trials saw a change | Daily dose used | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood and cell glutathione | From 1 month, largest at 6 months | 250mg to 1,000mg (reduced) | Randomised trial, 54 adults |
| Immune cell activity | 3 months | 1,000mg | Same trial, a subset of participants |
| Skin tone and wrinkles | 4 to 12 weeks, mixed results | 250mg to 500mg | Two small trials in Thailand |
| Fatigue during exercise | 2 weeks | 1,000mg | One crossover study, 8 men |
| Everyday energy or focus | Not measured | None | No trial found |
Skin clarity and glow
Skin is the slowest goal to judge, and the trials disagree on how much changes. Plan on 12 weeks before you decide. Some people pair glutathione with vitamin C, and our guide to glutathione versus vitamin C for skin and immunity compares the two.
Immune support through winter
The immune result was a lab measure of natural killer cell activity at three months, not a measure of how often people got sick. If immune support is your reason for taking it, start in autumn so your stores have time to build before winter. Our immune support supplements guide covers the other options.
Energy and brain fog
Some online summaries promise sharper focus or more energy in the first two weeks. We found no trial of oral glutathione that measured everyday energy or mental clarity, so that timeline has no data behind it. The closest result is the two-week exercise study above, which scored fatigue and vigour after one cycling session. If energy is your main goal, see how glutathione fits with other supplements in our guide to longevity supplements in Australia.
How to tell if glutathione is working
You can’t feel antioxidant levels. The trials measured glutathione in blood samples with lab methods most people won’t have access to, so judge progress on things you can see and record:
- Photograph the same patch of skin in the same light every four weeks. The 12-week skin trial measured at weeks 4, 8 and 12.
- If you train, note how a regular session feels, such as the same hour on the bike.
- Write down your energy and sleep once a fortnight rather than trusting memory.
Keep your expectations honest. In the 12-week skin trial, the women’s own ratings of their skin were no different from placebo, even at sites where the instruments picked up changes. A small change can be real and still hard to see in the mirror.
That trial reported no serious adverse events. Itching and small red spots turned up in both the glutathione and placebo groups, and two participants left early with raised liver test results that returned to normal within weeks (the paper does not say which group they were in). Read our guide to glutathione side effects before you start, and stop and see your doctor if anything worries you.
What a fair three-month trial costs in Australia
Because glutathione needs about three months, the useful price is what 90 days costs at each product’s label serve, not the price of one bottle. Prices are as of Sep 2026 and were read from each product’s own page.

Ours covers 90 days for the least money, either as one bottle at one capsule a day or two bottles at the label serve, and it gives the most glutathione per dollar in the table. BioCeuticals suits anyone who wants to start at the 250mg trial dose, though Chemist Warehouse lists it as practitioner only. Micronutrition is formulated and made in Australia. The three liposomal products give 250mg to 500mg a day, which is at or below the 500mg and 1,000mg doses in the liposomal pilot, and their case rests on better absorption per milligram, which only small studies have tested. If you would rather buy in store, our guide to glutathione at Chemist Warehouse lists what the chain stocks.

You can’t rush the build-up, but you can avoid slowing it down.
- Take it every day. Gains had faded a month after stopping in the six-month trial.
- Follow the label on timing. Ours says two capsules on an empty stomach, so first thing in the morning or between meals works. No trial has compared taking glutathione with and without food.
- Pick a dose and stay with it. One of our capsules gives 1,000mg, the top of the daily range tested over months. The two-capsule label serve is above it.
- Set a review date 12 weeks out. Judge it then, using your notes and photos rather than how you feel on a given day.
If you are also weighing TUDCA and berberine, note that the Metabolic Wellness Stack already includes Reduced L-Glutathione, so don’t buy glutathione twice. Some readers take glutathione alongside Trans-Resveratrol 1200mg, which has 600mg per capsule. Take resveratrol with or without food as its label says, keep glutathione on an empty stomach, and see our resveratrol dosage guide for how much to take.
What lowers glutathione in the body
Glutathione is used up and remade more than it is destroyed. Your cells spend it neutralising oxidants, then recycle it or build more from amino acids. Three things matter if you take a supplement:
- Digestion. Enzymes in the gut and liver split swallowed glutathione into its amino acids, which is why a single 3,000mg dose did not lift plasma levels (Witschi, 1992).
- Age. Older adults made glutathione more slowly and had about half the red-cell glutathione of younger adults (Sekhar, 2011).
- Oxidative load. The share of glutathione in its used, oxidised form is a marker of oxidative stress. In the six-month trial that share fell in both dose groups.
For the bigger picture on what glutathione does day to day, read our overview of glutathione supplement benefits.
Who glutathione suits, and who it doesn’t
It suits you if:
- You are happy to take it daily for at least three months.
- You want the form with the longest placebo-controlled human trial behind it.
- You want the lowest cost for a 90-day run. At $0.44 for a 1,000mg capsule, ours is the cheapest per milligram in the table above.
It is not for you if:
- You want an effect you can feel within days.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding. The BioCeuticals label says not to use it then, and the BioHack label does not recommend it.
- You are under 18. Both of those labels say adults only.
If you take prescription medicines or have a medical condition, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for glutathione to kick in?
It depends on what you mean by kick in. Blood levels rose within a week on liposomal glutathione in a 12-person pilot, and after one month on reduced glutathione in the six-month trial. Changes you might see, such as in skin, took 4 to 12 weeks in trials, and the results were mixed. Give it three months.

How to tell if glutathione is working?
The trials measured glutathione in blood with lab methods that most people can’t easily get. At home, compare photos taken in the same light every four weeks and keep fortnightly notes on energy, sleep and training. In the 12-week skin trial, participants’ own ratings did not differ from placebo, so small changes are easy to miss.
Does glutathione raise oestrogen (estrogen) levels?
We found no human study showing that it does. A PubMed search in September 2026 turned up only animal and lab work linking glutathione with oestrogen, and the human glutathione trials in this guide did not measure hormones. If you take hormonal medicines or have a hormone-related condition, ask your doctor before starting.
What destroys glutathione in the body?
Enzymes in the gut and liver break down swallowed glutathione, which is why one large dose barely shows up in the blood. Inside the body, cells use glutathione up as they neutralise oxidants and then rebuild it. Older adults rebuild it more slowly: one study found their red-cell levels were about half those of younger adults.
Does glutathione work immediately?
No. A single dose of about 3,000mg did not significantly raise plasma glutathione over four and a half hours in one study. Blood levels need at least a month of daily use to shift, and the largest rise measured took six months.
How long does glutathione stay in your system?
In the six-month trial, levels were back at baseline one month after people stopped. Keep taking it daily if you want to hold the gains.
Is liposomal glutathione faster than capsules?
Possibly. A single-dose study found a peak about six times higher with a liposomal product, and a pilot saw blood levels rise within a week. Both had 12 people and links to industry. Reduced glutathione has the longer placebo-controlled trial and costs far less per milligram.
What is the best glutathione for a three-month trial in Australia?
Our pick is Eternal Elixir Reduced L-Glutathione 2000mg, which we make. Each capsule gives 1,000mg of reduced glutathione, the higher dose from the six-month trial, and one 90-capsule bottle for $39.99 lasts 90 days at one capsule a day or 45 days at the label serve. Our comparison of the best glutathione supplements in Australia covers more options.

The verdict
Our pick: Eternal Elixir Reduced L-Glutathione 2000mg. Glutathione takes about a month to show in the blood and three to six months for the bigger changes seen in trials, so the product that matters is one you can keep taking for 90 days. At 1,000mg per capsule and $39.99 for 90 capsules, ours covers a full three-month run at the higher tested dose for less than any other product we compared.
Take it daily, give it 12 weeks and review honestly. If you choose the two-capsule label serve, know that 2,000mg is above the doses the trials used.
