How to compare glutathione prices without getting fooled by the label
Glutathione labels in Australia quote their dose on different bases. Some state milligrams per capsule, some state milligrams per serving, and a serving can be one capsule, two capsules or a millilitre of liquid. A bottle price on its own tells you almost nothing.
The fix is to work out cost per gram. Multiply the number of capsules by the milligrams per capsule, divide by 1,000 to get grams, then divide the price by that number. What the human trials on oral glutathione actually measured
For years the standard view was that glutathione taken by mouth is broken down in the gut before it can do much. Three human trials are worth knowing before you spend money, and they do not all point the same way. None of them tested a specific brand in this list.
Six months of reduced glutathione. Richie and colleagues ran a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 54 non-smoking adults. They took 250mg or 1,000mg of oral glutathione a day, or a placebo, for six months. Glutathione in blood rose at both doses after one, three and six months. At six months the 1,000mg group had 30% to 35% higher levels in red blood cells, plasma and lymphocytes, and 260% higher levels in cells from the lining of the mouth. The 250mg group had 17% higher levels in blood and 29% higher in red blood cells. Levels returned to baseline within a month of stopping (Eur J Nutr, 2015).
One month of liposomal glutathione. Sinha and colleagues gave 12 healthy adults 500mg or 1,000mg of liposomal glutathione a day for four weeks. Levels rose within a week and peaked at two weeks, with increases of up to 40% in whole blood, 25% in red blood cells, 28% in plasma and 100% in a type of white blood cell. There was no placebo group, the sample was small, and the study was funded by a company that sells liposomal glutathione. The authors called their findings preliminary (Eur J Clin Nutr, 2018).
Four weeks with no change. Allen and Bradley randomised 40 healthy adults to 500mg of oral glutathione twice a day (1,000mg a day) or placebo for four weeks. They found no change in urinary markers of oxidative stress and no change in glutathione measured in red blood cells (J Altern Complement Med, 2011). This is the strongest evidence against oral glutathione, and it is why we would not promise results in the first month.
What this means when you buy. The longest and largest controlled trial used reduced glutathione, the form in our capsules and in BioCeuticals’, and found higher stores after months rather than weeks. The case for liposomal rests on one small, uncontrolled pilot. No trial has compared liposomal and reduced capsules head to head, and no trial has tested more than 1,000mg a day. So a bigger daily amount, or a liposomal wrapper, has not been shown to work better. What the research does support is taking a meaningful amount every day for several months. That is where cost per gram decides what you spend.
