Quick answer: The typical glutathione dosage in human trials is 250mg to 1,000mg a day by mouth. In the longest trial, both doses raised the body’s glutathione stores over six months, and 1,000mg raised them more. A four-week trial at 1,000mg found no change, so judge it over months, not weeks. Our label serve of 2,000mg (two capsules) is twice the highest dose those trials used, and one capsule gives 1,000mg. Our pick is Eternal Elixir Reduced L-Glutathione 2000mg: 1,000mg per capsule, 90 capsules for $39.99, which is $0.89 a day at the label serve, dispatched in 1 business day.

What is the typical dosage of glutathione?
Glutathione is a small protein-like molecule, made of three amino acids, that your cells make for themselves and use as an antioxidant. Taken by mouth, much of it is broken down in the gut, which is why the dose and the form matter. Our overview of what glutathione does in the body covers the background.
Here is what the human trials actually used.
| Study | Who | Dose and length | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Richie et al., 2015 | 54 non-smoking adults | 250mg or 1,000mg a day of reduced glutathione, 6 months | Blood glutathione rose at 1, 3 and 6 months at both doses. At 1,000mg, levels in red cells, plasma and lymphocytes rose 30 to 35% by six months. Levels fell back to baseline a month after stopping. |
| Allen and Bradley, 2011 | 40 healthy adults | 1,000mg a day (500mg twice daily), 4 weeks | No change in oxidative stress markers or in red-cell glutathione compared with placebo. |
| Weschawalit et al., 2017 | Healthy women | 250mg a day, 12 weeks | Skin melanin index tended to be lower than placebo, and wrinkles were reduced at some of the sites measured. |
| Sinha et al., 2018 | 12 healthy adults, no placebo group | 500mg or 1,000mg a day of liposomal glutathione, 1 month | Blood glutathione rose within a week and peaked at two weeks, with 40% higher levels in whole blood. |
| Prasad et al., 2026 | 12 healthy adults | A single 1,000mg dose, liposomal or plain | Peak plasma glutathione was about six times higher with the liposomal product. |
| Witschi et al., 1992 | 7 healthy volunteers | A single dose of about 3,000mg | Plasma glutathione did not rise over the next four and a half hours. |
The six-month trial is the best evidence on daily dosing, and it is the reason most guides quote 250mg to 1,000mg. The single-dose study from 1992 is the reason some people still say oral glutathione does nothing. The two findings fit together: one dose does little, while taking it every day for months builds up the body’s stores. The four-week trial that found no change suggests a month is too short to judge.
Add Reduced L-Glutathione to cart · $39.99Our serve compared with the trial doses
Our label says two capsules daily on an empty stomach, which gives 2,000mg. That is twice the 1,000mg used in the six-month trial, and we found no randomised trial of 2,000mg a day in healthy adults. One capsule gives 1,000mg, the higher dose from that trial.
So if you want to stay inside the dose range tested over six months, one capsule a day does it, and a bottle then lasts 90 days at $0.44 a day. The two-capsule label serve costs $0.89 a day and lasts 45 days. Ask your doctor or pharmacist which suits you, especially if you take other supplements or medicines.
Neither choice makes glutathione a quick fix. In the six-month trial, levels returned to baseline within a month of stopping, so whatever dose you pick only works while you keep taking it.
Glutathione dosage by goal
| Your goal | Daily dose used in trials | What the trial measured | With our capsules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raising the body’s glutathione stores | 250mg to 1,000mg for 6 months | Glutathione in blood, red cells, plasma and lymphocytes. | One capsule matches the 1,000mg arm. |
| Immune cell activity | 1,000mg | Natural killer cell activity was more than twice placebo at three months. | One capsule matches the dose. |
| Skin tone and texture | 250mg for 12 weeks (an earlier trial used 500mg) | Melanin index and wrinkles at some sites. | One capsule is four times the 250mg dose. |
| Faster absorption | 500mg to 1,000mg of a liposomal form | Blood levels over 1 to 4 weeks, or after a single dose. | Ours is reduced glutathione, not liposomal. |
Body size, diet, alcohol and training load all affect how much glutathione your body uses, but no trial has set doses by those factors. Anchor to the tested range and judge the result over two to six months. To compare finished products on more than dose, see our best glutathione supplements in Australia.
Best time to take glutathione
Our label says to take it on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning or between meals. The reasoning is that food and digestive enzymes break glutathione down, so taking it away from meals should leave more intact. No trial has compared taking glutathione with and without food, so treat this as sensible practice rather than a tested rule.
The 2011 trial split 1,000mg into two 500mg doses a day. If you take two capsules, you can take one in the morning and one between meals later in the day. Take it with water, and at the same time each day so the habit sticks. If you are comparing glutathione with a precursor such as NAC, our guide to glutathione compared with NAC for liver support sets out the difference.
How long does glutathione take to work?
In the six-month trial, blood glutathione was already higher at one month and kept rising at three and six months at the higher dose. The liposomal pilot study saw a rise within a week. The four-week trial of plain glutathione at 1,000mg saw none. Put together, expect blood levels to change over weeks and any effect you might feel, such as on skin, to take two to three months.
Our timeline for how long glutathione takes to work goes week by week. Because levels fall back within a month of stopping, glutathione suits a long-term routine. Our longevity supplement stack guide shows where it fits alongside other supplements.
Does the form change the dose? Reduced vs liposomal
The number on the label is only part of the story, because absorption depends on the form.
Reduced L-glutathione
Reduced L-glutathione is the form your cells use and the form tested in the six-month dosing trial. It is the best-studied oral option, which makes its dose the easiest to set. Ours is reduced L-glutathione at 1,000mg per capsule.
Liposomal glutathione
Liposomal glutathione wraps the molecule in a fat-based shell to help it survive the gut. In a 2026 study, a single 1,000mg liposomal dose reached a peak plasma level about six times higher than plain glutathione. That study had 12 people, six per group, was open-label and tested one branded liposomal product, so it is an early signal. The 2018 liposomal pilot had no placebo group and was funded by a liposomal glutathione company. Our comparison of liposomal versus reduced L-glutathione weighs the cost against the absorption case.
How Australian glutathione products compare on dose
Prices are as of Sep 2026 and were read from each product’s own page.
| Product | Price (AUD) | Form | Per capsule | Label serve | Cost per day at label serve | Cost per 1,000mg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eternal Elixir Reduced L-Glutathione 2000mg | $39.99 for 90 capsules | Reduced | 1,000mg | 2 capsules (2,000mg) | $0.89 | $0.44 |
| BioCeuticals Glutathione (Chemist Warehouse) | $47.99 for 60 capsules | Reduced | 250mg | 1 capsule once or twice a day | $0.80 to $1.60 | $3.20 |
| BioHack Wanderlust Liposomal Glutathione (Chemist Warehouse) | $34.49 for 60 capsules (RRP $68.99) | Liposomal | 125mg | 2 capsules (250mg) | $1.15 | $4.60 |
| Codeage Liposomal Glutathione (iHerb AU) | $63.99 for 60 capsules | Liposomal | 250mg | 2 capsules (500mg) | $2.13 | $4.27 |
Ours gives the most glutathione per dollar by a wide margin, and one capsule covers the higher trial dose. BioCeuticals’ 250mg capsule suits anyone who wants to start at the lower trial dose, though it is labelled practitioner only. The liposomal products give smaller amounts, and the case for them rests on better absorption per milligram, which only small studies have tested. Cost per 1,000mg ignores that absorption difference, so read it as a guide to value, not a like-for-like dose.
Add Reduced L-Glutathione to cart · $39.99Glutathione dosage safety: can you take too much?
In the trials above, oral glutathione was well tolerated at up to 1,000mg a day for six months, and the 12-week skin trial reported no serious adverse effects. Our 2,000mg label serve is above anything tested for months in healthy adults, which is one reason to consider starting with one capsule. Our guide to glutathione side effects and safety covers the reports in more detail.
Do not take glutathione if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it; the BioCeuticals label, for one, says not to use it then. If you take prescription medicines or have a medical condition, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Quality matters as much as dose. Our product page states that every batch is third-party lab tested for purity and potency, and you can ask for the current batch certificate. The label lists L-glutathione 2,000mg (reduced) per two-capsule serve, rice flour and a cellulose capsule, and nothing else.
Who glutathione suits, and who it doesn’t
It suits you if:
- You want to raise your glutathione stores and are happy to take it daily for months.
- You prefer the form and dose range with the longest human trial behind them.
- You want the lowest cost per milligram. At $0.44 per 1,000mg capsule, ours is the cheapest in the table above.
It is not for you if:
- You want a fast, noticeable effect. The trials measured change over weeks to months.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You want a low starting dose in one capsule. A 250mg capsule such as BioCeuticals’ suits that better.
Some people take glutathione alongside other antioxidants. If you also want Trans-Resveratrol, take it with a meal as its label directs, separately from your glutathione. If you are considering TUDCA and berberine too, the Metabolic Wellness Stack already includes Reduced L-Glutathione, so do not buy glutathione twice. Glutathione also features in our winter immune support guide.

Glutathione dosage: frequently asked questions
How much glutathione should I take per day?
Human trials used 250mg to 1,000mg a day. In the six-month trial both doses raised glutathione stores, and 1,000mg raised them more. One Eternal Elixir capsule gives 1,000mg, and the two-capsule label serve gives 2,000mg, which is above the doses tested.
Add Reduced L-Glutathione to cart · $39.99
Is 2,000mg of glutathione a day too much?
It is twice the highest daily dose tested over six months in healthy adults, and we found no randomised trial of 2,000mg a day. The trials up to 1,000mg reported it was well tolerated. If you want to stay inside the tested range, take one 1,000mg capsule, and check with your doctor if you are unsure.
What is the best time to take glutathione?
Our label says on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning or between meals. No trial has compared taking it with and without food. Taking it at the same time every day matters for building stores, because levels fall back within a month of stopping.
How long does glutathione take to work?
Blood glutathione was higher after one month in the six-month trial and kept rising at the higher dose. A four-week trial found no change, so give it two to three months before you judge it. Our week-by-week timeline covers this in more detail.
Is liposomal glutathione better than reduced glutathione?
It may be absorbed better per milligram. A single-dose study found peak plasma levels about six times higher with a liposomal product, but it had only 12 people. Reduced glutathione has the longer trial, and it costs far less per milligram.
Can you take too much glutathione?
At the doses studied, up to 1,000mg a day for six months, oral glutathione was well tolerated. Doses above that have not been tested for months in healthy adults. Stay within your label, start at the lower end if you are unsure, and talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medicines.
The verdict
Our pick: Eternal Elixir Reduced L-Glutathione 2000mg. Each capsule gives 1,000mg of reduced glutathione, the higher dose from the six-month trial, and a 90-capsule bottle costs $39.99, the lowest cost per milligram we found.
Aim for the tested range of 250mg to 1,000mg a day, take it daily on an empty stomach, and give it two to three months. If you choose the two-capsule label serve, know that 2,000mg is above the doses the trials used.
