We looked at the NAD+ supplements Australians meet most often: the brands on the first page of Google for this search, the ones on Chemist Warehouse shelves, and the imported jars sold through iHerb AU. For each product we recorded the precursor, the amount per daily serve, the capsule count, the price and the retailer. We then ranked them on three questions:

• Does a daily serve reach the doses used in human trials? The NMN trials below used 250mg to 900mg a day. The NR trials used 100mg to 2,000mg a day.
• What does a day cost? Bottle price divided by the label’s daily serve. A 30-capsule bottle can look cheaper on the shelf than a 90-capsule one and still cost twice as much per day.

What the human trials show about NMN and NR

Both precursors reliably raise NAD+ levels in the blood. Whether that leads to health benefits you can feel is much less clear. Here are the trials that matter most, with who took part, the dose and how long it lasted. We have left out mouse studies, because results in mice do not tell you what happens in people.

NMN

60 days, 80 healthy middle-aged adults. Participants took a placebo or 300mg, 600mg or 900mg of NMN once a day. Blood NAD rose in every NMN group compared with placebo and was highest at 600mg and 900mg. The NMN groups also walked further in a six-minute walking test than the placebo group. There was no difference in insulin resistance, and NMN was well tolerated at up to 900mg a day. Three of the authors worked for companies that make NMN (Yi et al., 2023).

A 2026 review of 15 trials. A meta-analysis pooled 15 randomised trials that used 250mg to 2,000mg of NMN a day for 14 days to 24 weeks. NMN did not increase side effects or liver enzymes compared with the control groups. It also had no significant effect on body weight, fasting glucose, HbA1c, blood fats or systolic blood pressure, although diastolic blood pressure fell slightly (Yang et al., 2026).

NR

Six weeks, 30 healthy middle-aged and older adults. In a crossover trial in Colorado, participants took 500mg of NR (as Niagen) twice a day, 1,000mg in total, and a placebo for six weeks each. Twenty-four completed the trial. NR raised NAD+ in blood immune cells by about 60% compared with placebo and was well tolerated (Martens et al., 2018).

Eight weeks, 140 healthy overweight adults. Participants took a placebo or 100mg, 300mg or 1,000mg of NR a day. Whole-blood NAD+ rose by 22%, 51% and 142% respectively within two weeks and stayed up, and side effects did not differ from placebo. The trial was funded by the company that sells Niagen (Conze et al., 2019).

Twelve weeks, 40 men with a BMI over 30. In a Danish trial, 2,000mg of NR a day did not improve insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism or body composition compared with placebo, although it appeared safe (Dollerup et al., 2018).

What hasn’t been shown

• No NAD+ precursor has been shown to slow ageing or extend lifespan in people.
• Raising blood NAD+ has not consistently improved metabolic measures such as insulin sensitivity, glucose or body weight.
• Most trials are small and last weeks to months, and several were funded by ingredient makers.
• Large trials comparing NMN with NR head to head are lacking, so neither can be called better on the evidence.

That is why we rank on dose, cost and convenience. What the trials do support is that a daily NMN or NR dose raises NAD+ levels, and that the doses in our table were well tolerated over the periods studied.

NMN vs NR: which should Australians choose?

NMN and NR are closely related. Your body converts both into NAD+ through the same recycling pathway, and both raised NAD+ in the trials above. NR has been studied in people for longer, mostly in its branded Niagen form. NMN has more recent trials, and five of the eight products in our table use it.
