Swisse vs Blackmores 2026: Berberine, Saffron and Liver Picks

Swisse vs Blackmores comparison: berberine and saffron capsules spilling from a white supplement bottle

Last updated: October 22, 2026 · By Eternal Elixir Editorial

Last updated: October 22, 2026 · By Eternal Elixir Editorial · 8 products compared

You are standing in the vitamin aisle at Chemist Warehouse with a Swisse box in one hand and a Blackmores box in the other. Both brands are household names, both fill an entire bay, and the front of each pack tells you very little about what is inside. The Swisse vs Blackmores question most people ask is really a smaller one: for the thing I want to take, which bottle gives me more of the active ingredient for my money?

This guide answers that question for three categories where Eternal Elixir also makes a product: berberine, saffron and liver support. We read every label and price on the brands’ own pages and at Chemist Warehouse on 22 October 2026, worked out the cost per day at the label directions, and added Healthy Care because it sits on the same shelf and turned up in the same searches. If you want the wider picture of local brands first, our ranking of the top Australian supplement brands covers ten of them.

Quick Answer

Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg is our top pick when you compare Swisse vs Blackmores for berberine in Australia, because it gives 500 mg of berberine HCl a capsule for $0.56 a day, against $3.00 a day for Swisse Cellular Metabolism at 188 mg. Blackmores sells no berberine product. For mood, Eternal Elixir Saffron Extract 30mg is the lower-cost affron® option.

Based on live AUD prices and label directions for 8 products sold in Australia, read 22 October 2026

Swisse vs Blackmores: Which Brand Sells What in These Three Categories

Before comparing prices, it helps to know where each brand actually has a product. The two names are often seen as interchangeable, yet their ranges split in ways that matter for this comparison. We searched both brands’ Australian websites and the Chemist Warehouse listings for berberine, saffron and liver products on 22 October 2026.

CategorySwisseBlackmoresHealthy CareEternal Elixir
BerberineNutra Cellular Metabolism, 188 mg berberine a tablet (phytosome)No berberine product. Sugar Balance is a chromium and B-vitamin formulaBlood Sugar Control with Berberine, 50 mg Indian barberry extract in a herbal blendBerberine HCl 500mg, single ingredient, A$49.99 for 90 capsules

Liver supportNo single-ingredient liver product foundMilk Thistle, 55 mg silymarin a tabletNot compared hereTUDCA 500mg, A$59.99 for 90 capsules

So the honest answer to “Swisse or Blackmores?” depends on the category. For berberine and saffron, Swisse is the only one of the two big brands with a product at all. For liver support, Blackmores has the long-running herbal option and Swisse has nothing comparable on its site. That gap is the reason this page compares products rather than logos.

Key numbers:

  • Berberine per 1,000 mg: $1.11 for Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg, $15.96 for Swisse Cellular Metabolism (worked out on its 188 mg of berberine per tablet).
  • 30 days of saffron at the label dose: $16.66 for Eternal Elixir (30 mg a day), $29.50 for Swisse Stress Relief Smart Melt (28 mg a day).
  • 30 days of liver support at the label dose: $20.00 for Eternal Elixir TUDCA, $38.55 for Blackmores Milk Thistle.

One caution on the berberine row. Swisse uses a phytosome form, where berberine is bound to a phospholipid carrier, so its 188 mg may be absorbed differently from plain berberine HCl. We explain what the published study on that form found further down, and why we still show the per-milligram figure.

#1. Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg — Best for most people comparing Swisse and Blackmores for berberine

Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg is a single-ingredient capsule: 500 mg of berberine HCl from a 20:1 extract, 90 capsules to a bottle, and a label direction of one capsule a day. At $49.99 that is $0.56 a day, and one bottle covers three months.

Set it against the two big brands and the gap is wide. Swisse Nutra Cellular Metabolism costs $89.99 for 30 tablets with 188 mg of berberine in each, so a month at one tablet a day is $89.99 against $16.66 here. Blackmores has no berberine product to compare at all. Its Sugar Balance tablet, which often sits beside berberine on the shelf, is built on chromium and B vitamins instead.

The dose matters because the human research on berberine used much more than one Swisse tablet provides. The best-known trial gave 1.0 g a day, which is two Eternal Elixir capsules for $1.11 a day. Our berberine dosage guide walks through how people usually build up to that amount, and the berberine supplements compared on cost page runs every Australian berberine bottle through the same arithmetic.

Key specs: 500 mg berberine HCl per capsule · 90 capsules · 1 capsule a day on the label · $49.99 AUD · third-party tested.

Pros:

  • $0.56 a day, the lowest daily berberine cost among the products here with a stated daily dose
  • One ingredient, so you can move from one capsule to two without doubling anything else
  • Every batch is third-party lab tested, with the certificate of analysis available on request

Cons:

  • Plain berberine HCl, with no phytosome carrier
  • Following the 1.0 g trial dose means two capsules a day, so a bottle lasts 45 days

Best for: anyone who wants a meaningful berberine dose at a fraction of the big-brand price. Berberine can interact with prescribed medicines, so read our berberine side effects guide and talk with your GP first if you take regular medication.

Price and where to buy: $49.99 AUD. Buy Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg.

#2. Eternal Elixir Saffron Extract 30mg — Best for mood support at the studied dose

Eternal Elixir Saffron Extract 30mg uses affron®, the same branded saffron extract Swisse names on its Stress Relief Smart Melt. One capsule gives 30 mg, the bottle holds 90, and at $49.99 the daily cost is $0.56.

The research behind affron® has an Australian thread. A four-week trial led from the University of Southern Queensland gave 128 adults who reported low mood either 28 mg or 22 mg of affron® a day, or a placebo. The 28 mg group showed a significant fall in negative mood and stress-related scores against placebo, and the 22 mg group showed no effect. That is why the daily amount matters more than the brand on the box. Our explainer on what the affron® saffron extract is covers its standardisation in more detail.

Swisse reaches 28 mg with two melts a day, so both products line up with the effective arm of that trial. The difference is cost and format: $0.56 a day for one capsule here against $0.98 a day for two Swisse melts.

Key specs: 30 mg affron® per capsule · 90 capsules · 1 capsule a day with a meal · $49.99 AUD · third-party tested.

Pros:

  • Covers the 28 mg daily amount from the mood trial in a single capsule
  • About 43% less per day than the Swisse melt
  • Three months per bottle

Cons:

  • A capsule you swallow, which some people like less than a melt
  • No added vitamin B12, which the Swisse melt includes

Best for: people who want saffron for mood or stress at the dose the trial used. Our guide to saffron for mood and stress explains what to expect in the first four weeks.

Price and where to buy: $49.99 AUD. Order Eternal Elixir Saffron Extract 30mg.

#3. Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg — Best for a bile-acid approach to liver support

Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg holds 500 mg of tauroursodeoxycholic acid in each capsule, with one capsule a day on the label. A 90-capsule bottle costs $59.99, so a day costs $0.67.

TUDCA is a bile acid, which makes it a different tool from the milk thistle Blackmores sells. Milk thistle is a herb with a long traditional use for the liver, and its active group of compounds is called silymarin. TUDCA is studied for its role in bile flow and in protecting liver cells under stress. People often take one or the other depending on which approach they prefer, and our TUDCA vs NAC vs milk thistle comparison sets out where each fits.

On cost alone, a month of TUDCA at the label dose is $20.00 against $38.55 for Blackmores Milk Thistle at three tablets a day. The two are not like for like, so read that as the cost of each approach rather than a head-to-head on milligrams.

Key specs: 500 mg TUDCA per capsule · 90 capsules · 1 capsule a day with a meal · $59.99 AUD · third-party tested.

Pros:

  • One capsule a day, against three Blackmores tablets
  • $0.67 a day and three months per bottle
  • Pairs with Reduced L-Glutathione 2000mg if you want an antioxidant alongside it

Cons:

  • A different compound from milk thistle, so it is a switch of approach and not a like-for-like swap
  • Higher bottle price than the Blackmores pack, even though it lasts longer

Best for: people who want a single, clearly dosed liver and bile support capsule.

Price and where to buy: $59.99 AUD. Try Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg.

#4. Swisse Nutra Cellular Metabolism — Best for a phytosome form of berberine

Swisse Nutra Cellular Metabolism is the product people usually mean when they search Swisse berberine. Each tablet contains Berbevis® Berberis aristata extract standardised to 188 mg of berberine, plus 10 mg of the BPL1® postbiotic and 25 micrograms of chromium. The label gives two directions: one tablet a day for blood sugar and carbohydrate metabolism, or two a day for cholesterol and body composition. The pack holds 30 tablets for $89.99 on the Swisse store.

That makes the daily cost $3.00 at one tablet and $6.00 at two, the highest daily cost in this comparison. Per 1,000 mg of berberine it works out at $15.96, against $1.11 for the Eternal Elixir capsule.

The fair counterpoint is the phytosome. Swisse binds its berberine to a phospholipid carrier and says this improves absorption. A pharmacokinetic study of berberine phytosome in healthy volunteers, published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, reported higher blood levels than plain berberine, with bioavailability around ten times higher on a molar basis. Swisse’s own page uses a more cautious four-times figure. Either way, 188 mg of phytosome berberine may count for more than 188 mg of plain berberine HCl, so read the per-milligram figure as a guide to what you pay for, not a measure of effect.

Key specs: 188 mg berberine (as Berbevis® phytosome) per tablet · 30 tablets · 1 to 2 tablets a day · $89.99 AUD.

Pros:

  • Phytosome form with published absorption data
  • Adds a postbiotic and chromium in the same tablet

Cons:

  • $3.00 to $6.00 a day, the highest daily cost here
  • A 30-tablet pack lasts 15 to 30 days

Best for: Swisse loyalists who specifically want a phytosome berberine and accept the price.

Price and where to buy: $89.99 AUD on the Swisse online store.

#5. Healthy Care Blood Sugar Control with Berberine — Best for the lowest price per capsule among the berberine products

Healthy Care Blood Sugar Control with Berberine is a herbal blend rather than a berberine product in the strict sense. Each capsule contains 60 mg of fenugreek seed extract, 60 mg of gymnema leaf extract, 50 mg of bitter melon extract and 50 mg of Indian barberry (Berberis aristata) root extract, plus 10 micrograms of chromium, biotin and vitamin B6. A 100-capsule bottle is $29.99 at Chemist Warehouse.

That is $0.30 a capsule, the lowest per-capsule price of the three berberine products here. Two details make a fair daily comparison impossible, though. The listing does not state how much berberine the 50 mg of barberry extract contains, and we could not find the daily direction on the Chemist Warehouse page at the time of writing. Check the pack before you work out what a month costs.

Healthy Care describes the four herbs as traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. If you prefer a blend of traditional herbs to a single measured compound, this is the product here built that way. Our guide to berberine at Chemist Warehouse lists the other berberine options on the same shelf.

Pros:

  • $0.30 a capsule, the lowest per-capsule price among the berberine products here
  • Four traditional herbs plus chromium in one capsule

Cons:

  • Berberine content per capsule is not stated on the listing
  • Daily direction not found on the listing at the time of writing

Best for: shoppers who want a low-cost herbal blend and are less concerned with a measured berberine dose.

Price and where to buy: $29.99 AUD at Chemist Warehouse.

#6. Swisse Ultiboost Stress Relief Smart Melt — Best for saffron as a melt-in-the-mouth tablet

Swisse Ultiboost Stress Relief Smart Melt is an orally disintegrating tablet with 14 mg of saffron extract (from 42 mg of dry stigma) and 12.5 micrograms of vitamin B12. Swisse names the extract as affron® on the product page. The direction is one melt twice a day after a meal, which gives 28 mg of saffron extract a day, the same amount that worked in the mood trial.

The pack holds 60 melts for $29.50, which is 30 days and $0.98 a day. When we checked on 22 October 2026 the product showed as sold out on swisse.com.au, with a link to buy it through Woolworths instead.

The melt format is the real point of difference. It dissolves on the tongue with no water, and Swisse says the tablet is 99% sugar-free. If you dislike swallowing capsules, that may be worth the extra 42 cents a day. For a wider look at saffron products sold here, see our saffron at Chemist Warehouse guide.

Pros:

  • Reaches the 28 mg trial amount at the label direction
  • No water needed, and it adds vitamin B12

Cons:

  • $0.98 a day against $0.56 for the affron® capsule
  • Sold out on the Swisse store when we checked

Best for: people who want affron® saffron in a format that needs no water.

Price and where to buy: $29.50 AUD listed on the Swisse store.

#7. Blackmores Milk Thistle — Best for traditional herbal liver support at the lowest bottle price

Blackmores Milk Thistle gives 100 mg of milk thistle extract per tablet, equivalent to 7 g of dry fruit and standardised to 55 mg of silymarin. The direction is one tablet three times a day with food, so the 42-tablet pack lasts 14 days. Chemist Warehouse listed it at $17.99 on 22 October 2026, down from an RRP of $23.99.

$17.99 is the lowest bottle price in this list. Per day it is $1.29, or $38.55 for a month, because three tablets a day empties the pack quickly. Blackmores describes milk thistle as traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to maintain healthy liver function. Our TUDCA at Chemist Warehouse guide explains how TUDCA sits next to milk thistle on the same shelf.

Pros:

  • Lowest bottle price in this comparison
  • Silymarin content stated clearly on the label

Cons:

  • Three tablets a day, so the pack lasts two weeks
  • $1.29 a day, about double the TUDCA capsule

Best for: people who prefer a long-established herbal approach to liver support.

Price and where to buy: $17.99 AUD at Chemist Warehouse.

#8. Blackmores Sugar Balance — Best for Blackmores buyers who want a chromium formula

Blackmores Sugar Balance is the nearest Blackmores gets to the berberine products above, and it contains no berberine. Each tablet combines chromium (66.6 micrograms in total from two forms), a spread of B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D3, 100 mg of magnesium and manganese. The direction is one tablet three times a day with food, so the 90-tablet pack is a 30-day supply. Chemist Warehouse listed it at $24.99, down from an RRP of $31.99.

That is $0.83 a day. Blackmores says the formula helps maintain healthy blood sugar and supports sugar and carbohydrate metabolism, through chromium rather than a plant alkaloid. If your interest is berberine itself, this is a different product, and the research summarised below does not apply to it.

Pros:

  • Chromium plus B vitamins in a single tablet
  • A 30-day pack at $0.83 a day

Cons:

  • No berberine, so it is not a substitute for the berberine products here
  • Three tablets a day with food

Best for: existing Blackmores users who want a chromium and B-vitamin formula.

Price and where to buy: $24.99 AUD at Chemist Warehouse.

What the Research Says About Berberine and Saffron

Any Swisse vs Blackmores decision for these ingredients comes back to dose. The studies below are on the ingredients, not on any finished product in this list. They show what dose was used, which is the most useful thing to check against a label.

Berberine. In a three-month placebo-controlled trial published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Zhang and colleagues gave 116 adults with raised blood glucose and blood lipids 1.0 g of berberine a day. Fasting plasma glucose in the berberine group moved from 7.0 to 5.6 mmol/L, and five participants reported mild to moderate constipation. That daily amount is two Eternal Elixir capsules a day.

Berberine phytosome. Petrangolini and colleagues tested the phytosome form Swisse uses in a study in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In healthy volunteers it gave higher blood levels of berberine than unformulated berberine, with bioavailability around ten times higher on a molar basis. This was an absorption study, so it tells you about blood levels and not about longer-term outcomes.

Saffron (affron®). Kell and colleagues ran the four-week, double-blind trial reported in Complementary Therapies in Medicine. 128 adults reporting low mood took 28 mg or 22 mg of affron® a day, or a placebo. Negative mood and stress-related scores fell at 28 mg, with no measurable effect at 22 mg.

Results in a trial group do not predict how one person will respond. If you take prescription medicines, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or manage a health condition, speak with your GP or pharmacist first. The healthdirect page on vitamins, minerals and supplements is a sound plain-English starting point.

How We Evaluated These Swisse and Blackmores Products

Eternal Elixir makes the three products ranked first to third. They are our picks, and the order reflects that. Every figure for the other products is taken from their own labels and retailer pages, read on 22 October 2026. We did not test any Swisse, Blackmores or Healthy Care product.

Within that ownership, the order and the “Best for” labels in this Swisse vs Blackmores comparison were set by these criteria:

  • Quality and purity (30%): a named, standardised ingredient with the amount per capsule stated. Eternal Elixir holds third-party certificates of analysis for its own products.
  • Australian availability and shipping (20%): on sale here today, and what delivery costs.
  • Price per day in AUD (20%): the live price divided by the days a pack lasts at the label direction.
  • Range for stacking (15%): whether one store sells the other ingredients people commonly pair.
  • Dose against research (15%): whether the label dose reaches the amount used in a published human trial.

Every competitor keeps a true “Best for” label because each has something the Eternal Elixir bottles do not: a phytosome form, a herbal blend, a melt format, a traditional herb or a chromium formula.

Swisse or Blackmores: The Brand-Level Differences That Matter

Outside these three categories, the Swisse vs Blackmores choice comes down to range and buying route. Blackmores is the older company. Its own heritage page says it was founded in 1932 by Maurice Blackmore, and its range leans towards long-established single herbs and nutrients such as milk thistle and fish oil. Swisse’s range in these categories leans towards newer branded ingredients, with Berbevis® phytosome berberine and affron® saffron both named on its labels.

Price and buying route differ too. Swisse sells its range through its own online store as well as retailers, and the two Swisse products here were priced from swisse.com.au. The Blackmores and Healthy Care products were priced from Chemist Warehouse, where both carried a discount against RRP on the day we checked. Retail prices move often, so check the shelf price before you compare.

The bigger difference for most shoppers is the dose per tablet. Both big brands tend to split ingredients across combination formulas, which makes it harder to know how much of one active you are getting. If you already know the ingredient you want, a single-ingredient product makes that sum simple. For more single-ingredient comparisons, our Thorne alternatives in Australia page uses the same price-per-day method for an imported brand.

Swisse vs Blackmores: Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, Swisse or Blackmores?

It depends on the category. For berberine and saffron, Swisse has products and Blackmores has none, so Swisse wins by default between the two. For liver support, Blackmores has Milk Thistle and Swisse has no comparable single-ingredient product. Our top pick across all three is Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg at $0.56 a day. Eternal Elixir makes it.

Does Blackmores make a berberine supplement?

We found no Blackmores berberine product on its Australian website or at Chemist Warehouse on 22 October 2026. The closest is Blackmores Sugar Balance, a chromium, B-vitamin and magnesium formula at $24.99 for 90 tablets, which contains no berberine.

How much berberine is in Swisse Cellular Metabolism?

Each Swisse Nutra Cellular Metabolism tablet contains Berbevis® extract standardised to 188 mg of berberine, in a phytosome form. The label directs one or two tablets a day, and the 30-tablet pack costs $89.99, which is $3.00 to $6.00 a day.

Does Swisse use affron® saffron?

Yes. Swisse Ultiboost Stress Relief Smart Melt names affron® on its product page, with 14 mg of saffron extract per melt and a direction of two a day, so 28 mg daily. Eternal Elixir Saffron Extract 30mg also uses affron®, at 30 mg in one capsule for $0.56 a day.

Is milk thistle the same as TUDCA?

No. Milk thistle is a herb whose active compounds are called silymarin, and Blackmores Milk Thistle gives 55 mg of silymarin per tablet. TUDCA is a bile acid. Both are used for liver support, but they work differently, so switching from one to the other is a change of approach.

Where can you buy Swisse and Blackmores in Australia?

Both brands are sold through pharmacies such as Chemist Warehouse and through supermarkets. Swisse also sells through its own online store, although some products link out to other retailers. In this comparison the Swisse prices came from swisse.com.au and the Blackmores and Healthy Care prices came from Chemist Warehouse.

When was Blackmores founded?

Blackmores says on its heritage page that it was founded in 1932 by Maurice Blackmore. Its range in the categories compared here centres on traditional herbs and nutrients such as milk thistle and chromium formulas.

Verdict: Swisse vs Blackmores for Berberine, Saffron and Liver Support

Choose by category, not by logo. For berberine, Blackmores has nothing to offer and Swisse charges $3.00 to $6.00 a day for 188 to 376 mg in a phytosome form. Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg gives 500 mg for $0.56 a day, which is why it is our top pick.

For saffron, Swisse and Eternal Elixir both use affron® at the dose that worked in the mood trial. The capsule costs $0.56 a day and the Swisse melt $0.98. For liver support, Blackmores Milk Thistle is a fair traditional option at the lowest bottle price, and Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg is the one-capsule-a-day alternative at $0.67.

If sleep is part of the picture too, many readers pair saffron with Magnesium L-Threonate 2000mg. For more saffron options, see our saffron supplements compared for Australia, and for liver products, the TUDCA supplements compared guide.
