TUDCA, NAC and milk thistle all get sold as liver supplements, but they work on different parts of the job. TUDCA is a bile acid, so it sits on the bile side. NAC supplies cysteine, the building block your body uses to make glutathione. Milk thistle is a plant extract whose main compound, silymarin, is an antioxidant. This guide compares TUDCA vs NAC vs milk thistle on what each one is, what the human research actually shows, what each costs here in AUD, and which suits which goal.
Short answer
- TUDCA is the bile-acid option. Our pick is Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg: 500mg per capsule, 90 capsules, $0.67 a day, the lowest cost per 500mg of TUDCA in our table.
- NAC is the glutathione-building option. In one trial it only helped people whose glutathione started low. If glutathione is the goal, you can also take it directly.
- Milk thistle is the cheap, familiar option, but its human evidence is weak and the plain extract is poorly absorbed.
Eternal Elixir makes TUDCA 500mg and Reduced L-Glutathione, and we do not sell NAC or milk thistle. Keep that in mind when you read our pick. The competitor figures below come from each seller’s own product page.

TUDCA vs NAC vs Milk Thistle: How the Three Liver Supplements Differ
The quickest way to understand the three is to stop treating them as rivals. The liver makes and moves bile, handles oxidative load and runs a great deal of chemistry inside its cells. Each supplement is aimed at a different part of that work, which is why the right choice depends on what you are trying to support.
| Factor | TUDCA | NAC | Milk thistle (silymarin) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A bile acid (taurine bound to ursodeoxycholic acid) | A modified form of the amino acid cysteine | Seed extract of Silybum marianum |
| Route | Bile acids (cellular-stress effects shown mainly in lab studies) | Raw material for glutathione | Plant antioxidant |
| Best for | Bile and digestion focus, longevity stacks | Glutathione status, heavy training load | Low-cost daily maintenance |
| Human evidence in healthy adults | Small and early | Helped only when glutathione started low | Weak, and the plain extract absorbs poorly |
| Label dose on Australian products | 250mg to 500mg a day | 600mg a day | 165mg silymarin to 400mg silybin a day |
| Eternal Elixir option | TUDCA 500mg, 90 capsules | Reduced L-Glutathione (the molecule NAC is used to build) | Not stocked |
In short: if bile and cellular resilience are your priority, TUDCA leads. If glutathione is what you are after, NAC or glutathione itself is the lever. If you want the cheapest familiar option and accept thin evidence, milk thistle is the classic start. Our best liver support supplements in Australia roundup shows where each fits a full routine.
TUDCA: the bile-acid option
TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is ursodeoxycholic acid joined to taurine. Your body makes small amounts of it, and it belongs to the family of bile acids the liver uses to make bile, which is how you break down dietary fat. That is why TUDCA is the pick for people whose focus is bile and digestion.
What the human research shows is thinner than the marketing suggests. Most TUDCA studies were run in people with diagnosed liver conditions, in cells or in animals, and those results do not tell you what a capsule does for a healthy adult. One small trial in healthy people did look at it:
- Walsh et al., Clinical Science, 2016. 12 healthy young adults took a single 1,500mg dose of TUDCA or placebo on separate days (randomised crossover), then had a glucose drink. Blood-vessel function (flow-mediated dilation) dropped after the drink with placebo but held steady with TUDCA. TUDCA did not change the rise in blood glucose or insulin.
That is a blood-vessel measure after one dose, not a liver outcome over months, and it used three times the TUDCA in one of our capsules. We would rather tell you that plainly than stretch it.
Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg gives 500mg per vegetarian capsule, one capsule a day with a meal, 90 capsules to a bottle. Our TUDCA dosage guide for Australia covers timing and how long people take it, and our best TUDCA supplements in Australia compares eight brands. If you want to weigh the bile-acid route against the herbal one in more depth, see our TUDCA vs milk thistle comparison.
Add TUDCA 500mg to cart · $59.99NAC: The Glutathione Precursor
NAC (N-acetylcysteine) takes a different route. It supplies cysteine, and cysteine is usually the building block in shortest supply when cells make glutathione, the antioxidant the liver leans on. The catch is that topping up the raw material only seems to matter when supply is low.
- Paschalis et al., Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 2018. Researchers screened 100 people and picked 36 with low, moderate or high glutathione (12 per group). Each took 1,200mg of NAC a day (600mg twice daily) or placebo for 30 days in a double-blind crossover. In the low-glutathione group, NAC raised glutathione, lowered oxidative stress markers and improved exercise tests. In the moderate and high groups it made no real difference.
So NAC is not a general top-up for everyone. It looks most useful for people who start low, and most people do not know their level. In Australia, Bulk Nutrients sells NAC as 600mg capsules, one a day with food.
If raising glutathione is your real goal, you can also take the finished molecule. The best human trial of oral glutathione is Richie et al., European Journal of Nutrition, 2015: 54 non-smoking adults took 250mg or 1,000mg a day, or placebo, for 6 months. Glutathione in blood and red blood cells rose at both doses, more at the higher dose, and fell back after a month off. Eternal Elixir Reduced L-Glutathione gives 2,000mg in the two-capsule label serve, which is twice the trial’s higher dose. Each capsule holds 1,000mg, the higher dose the trial used. Our glutathione vs NAC breakdown explains when each makes sense, how long glutathione takes to work covers the timeline, and our TUDCA vs NAC comparison puts those two head to head.
Milk Thistle (Silymarin): The Traditional Antioxidant
Milk thistle is the option most Australians already know. It is cheap, sold in almost every pharmacy, and has a long history of traditional use. Its active complex is silymarin, and silybin is the main part of that complex.
The human evidence is the weakest of the three. A Cochrane review (Rambaldi et al., 2007) pooled 18 randomised trials with 1,088 participants, all people with diagnosed liver disease. Trial quality was mostly low, and milk thistle made no significant difference to the main outcomes in the higher-quality trials. There is little trial data at all in healthy adults. The Liver Foundation’s page on liver tonics puts it bluntly: “There’s not much evidence that these supplements work.”
Absorption is the other problem. In a study of 9 healthy volunteers (Barzaghi et al., 1990), silybin bound to phosphatidylcholine produced much higher blood silybin levels than standard silymarin at the same dose. If you do choose milk thistle, check the label for a standardised silymarin or silybin amount rather than just a dry-herb equivalent. Blackmores Milk Thistle, for example, lists 55mg of silymarin per tablet, three tablets a day. Herbs of Gold St Mary’s Thistle 35,000 lists 400mg of silybin-calculated flavanolignans in one daily tablet.
Milk thistle is a low-cost, well-tolerated choice for people who want a herbal option and accept the evidence gap. It is less targeted than TUDCA on bile or glutathione on antioxidant status.

| Herbs of Gold St Mary’s Thistle 35,000 | 400mg flavanolignans as silybin (1 tablet) | $47.45 | 60 (60 tablets) | $0.79 | Herbs of Gold |
Reading the table. The TUDCA rows are not like for like on dose, so compare them per 500mg of TUDCA. Ours costs $0.67 per 500mg. Nutricost costs $1.63, Emrald Labs $1.66 (two of its 250mg capsules) and Zombie Labs $2.00. Emrald Labs is the next cheapest per day at its own label serve, but that serve is half the TUDCA. NAC from Bulk Nutrients is the cheapest item in the table, and milk thistle sits under a dollar a day. Remember that these are three different ingredients doing three different jobs, so price alone should not decide it.
Which Should You Choose? TUDCA vs NAC vs Milk Thistle by Goal
There is no single winner here, because the right pick depends on what you want to support.
Choose TUDCA if
- bile and digestion are your focus, or you are building a longevity stack
- you want one capsule a day with a meal and a clearly stated 500mg dose
- you accept that the human evidence in healthy adults is still small
Choose NAC or glutathione if
- antioxidant status is your focus, for example during heavy training
- you would rather take glutathione itself than rely on your body to build it from NAC
- you understand that NAC helped only people whose glutathione started low in the trial above
Choose milk thistle if
- you want the lowest-cost herbal option from a pharmacy shelf
- you are comfortable with weak evidence and will pick a standardised silymarin or silybin product
These routes do not clash, so some people combine them, for example TUDCA for the bile side plus glutathione for the antioxidant side. If you want both of those in one order, our Metabolic Wellness Stack bundles TUDCA, berberine and glutathione, so do not buy it alongside a separate TUDCA bottle. If you are new to all three, start with one, give it four to six weeks and judge how you feel before adding a second. Our guide to the signs your liver needs support can help you decide where to begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take TUDCA, NAC and milk thistle together?
They work by different routes, but no trial has tested all three together, so there is no evidence either way on the combination. If you want to combine them, add one at a time over several weeks so you can tell how you respond. If you take prescription medicines or have a liver condition, talk to your doctor before starting any of them.
Which TUDCA brand is best in Australia?
Our pick is Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg, which we make. It gives 500mg per vegetarian capsule, 90 capsules to a bottle, and at $0.67 per 500mg it was the lowest cost per 500mg of TUDCA among the products we checked in September 2026. Of the others, Emrald Labs costs least per day, at $0.83 for a 250mg serve. Nutricost also gives 500mg per capsule, in gelatine capsules, at $1.63 a day. Our TUDCA brand comparison goes through eight options.

What’s better for liver, NAC or TUDCA?
Neither is better across the board, because they do different jobs. TUDCA is a bile acid, so it suits a bile and digestion focus. NAC supplies the cysteine used to make glutathione, and in the trial above it only made a difference for people whose glutathione started low. If antioxidant status is your goal, glutathione itself is another way in. Our TUDCA vs NAC guide covers the two in more depth.
What is the best liver support supplement in Australia?
For a single daily capsule, our pick is Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg, for its clearly stated 500mg dose, 90-capsule bottle and $0.67 daily cost. We make it, so weigh that. If glutathione is your focus, our Reduced L-Glutathione is the alternative. Milk thistle is cheaper per day but has the weakest evidence of the three. Whatever you choose, eating well, keeping a healthy weight and limiting alcohol matter more than any capsule, which is the Liver Foundation’s own advice.

Is milk thistle as good as TUDCA for liver support?
They are not equivalent. Milk thistle is a plant antioxidant with weak human evidence and poor absorption unless it is bound to phosphatidylcholine. TUDCA is a bile acid with a more specific role, though its own evidence in healthy adults is also small. Milk thistle is a reasonable low-cost start. TUDCA is the more targeted choice for the bile side.
Can you buy TUDCA, NAC and milk thistle at Chemist Warehouse?
Milk thistle, yes: Blackmores and Swisse both sell it there. When we searched Chemist Warehouse’s website in September 2026 it listed no TUDCA supplement, so TUDCA is bought online from specialist brands, and our TUDCA and Chemist Warehouse guide covers the options. NAC is sold online by Bulk Nutrients. Our page on where to buy TUDCA in Australia has more detail.
Who should avoid these supplements?
Read each label. Emrald Labs’ TUDCA listing says it is for healthy adults only, not for anyone under 18 or pregnant or nursing, and notes that stomach upset is more likely on an empty stomach. Blackmores tells pregnant or breastfeeding women to talk to a health professional first and to stop some products two weeks before elective surgery. The Liver Foundation warns that in some people with liver disease, liver tonics can do harm. If you have a liver condition or take any medicine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
The bottom line
TUDCA, NAC and milk thistle are three different tools. TUDCA covers the bile side, NAC and glutathione cover the antioxidant side, and milk thistle is the low-cost herbal option with the least evidence. If bile and digestion are your focus, Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg gives 500mg per capsule at $0.67 a day, 90 capsules to a bottle, shipped from Sydney.
