Search methylene blue Australia and much of page one is laboratory stain, research-only bottles and pages about the compound as a hospital medicine. This guide is about the thing most searchers want to buy: methylene blue sold as a supplement, with a stated strength and directions on the label. Before you buy any of them, read the safety section. Methylene blue does not mix with common antidepressants, and that matters more than the price table.

Methylene blue in Australia: supplement, lab stain or research-only bottle

• Laboratory stain. Scientific suppliers sell methylene blue solution for lab work. It is not made, labelled or dosed for people to take, so a low price per gram on a lab listing is not a reason to swallow it.
• Research-only bottles. Some brands sell methylene blue with a notice that it is not for people. Blootropic’s 1% liquid page, for example, says “Not for human consumption” and “For research purposes only”, and it gives no serving directions. We leave products like this out of the ranking, because their own seller says they are not for taking.
• Supplements. A small group of brands and retailers sell methylene blue to take by mouth, with the amount per capsule or per ml and a suggested serve on the label. These are the six products compared below.

How we compared them

Capsules and drops can’t be compared at face value. A 30ml bottle at 1.3% and a 120-capsule jar at 20mg are not the same amount of anything. So for every product we read the strength and container size from its listing, worked out the total methylene blue in the container, and divided the price by that figure to get cost per 10mg.

A worked example, so you can check us. Our liquid is a 1% solution, which is 10mg per ml, so a 50ml bottle holds 500mg. At $49.99 that is $1.00 per 10mg. Blue Tung is a 1.3% solution (13mg per ml) in a 30ml bottle, which is 390mg, so its $59.90 price works out at $1.54 per 10mg.

What to check before you buy methylene blue

Six things on a listing tell you most of what you need to know. We used them to write the “suits” and “doesn’t suit” notes further down.

1. Is it sold for people to take? Look for a supplement listing with directions. A notice such as “not for human consumption” or “for research purposes only” rules a product out, whatever the price.
2. Strength per unit. Capsules should state milligrams per capsule. Liquids should state a percentage or milligrams per ml (a 1% solution is 10mg per ml). Without one of these you can’t work out a dose.
3. A stated serve. The label serve tells you what the maker intends as a day’s amount. Blue Brain’s listing says “1 serve” without saying how much that is, which leaves the maths to you.
4. Grade and testing. USP grade means the supplier says the material meets the United States Pharmacopeia standard for methylene blue. A certificate of analysis shows results for a batch. Treat both as the seller’s statements unless you can see the document.
5. Other ingredients. Capsules need a filler and a shell. Liquids may be water only, or may add alcohol or a preservative. Check this if you avoid alcohol.
6. Where it ships from. Local dispatch means faster delivery and an Australian business to contact if something goes wrong.

Our Methylene Blue Liquid is a 1% solution: 10mg per ml of methylene blue USP in purified water, in a 50ml bottle. The label serve is 0.5 to 1ml (5 to 10mg) a day, diluted in water. At $49.99 that is $1.00 a day at 1ml, or about $0.50 a day at 0.5ml.

Of the three liquids compared here it has the lowest cost per 10mg and the biggest bottle, and it contains no alcohol (Blue Tung’s liquid lists grain-free alcohol). The round 1% strength keeps the maths easy: 1ml is the same 10mg as one of our capsules, and 0.5ml is half that.

Its label serve is much higher than the rest: two capsules a day, or 40mg of methylene blue, which the listing says matches 0.5mg/kg for an 80kg adult. At that serve a bottle lasts 60 days and costs about $2.78 a day. The listing says to avoid it during pregnancy, when trying to conceive and when taking SSRI antidepressants. We didn’t find a certificate of analysis or a testing statement on the page. Jing Organics has a shop in Byron Bay and ships free on orders over $249.

• Suits: experienced users who want a higher daily amount and taurine in the same capsule.
• Doesn’t suit: first-time users, anyone who wants 10mg or less a day, and anyone who would rather not spend $167 on one bottle.

#4. Blue Tung Methylene Blue at Elite Supps: testing statement on the listing

Blue Tung is sold in Australia through Elite Supps, and it is the product people mean when they search “methylene blue Elite Supps”. The listing says it is USP grade, has a certificate of analysis (COA), and has been tested for heavy metals and impurities. That is the most detailed testing statement among the four competitor listings. It is a 1.3% solution, about 900mcg per drop, in a 30ml bottle, and the ingredients are methylene blue, distilled water and grain-free alcohol.

The serving size is 1 to 5 drops. The listing suggests starting with 1 to 3 drops in water or juice and working up to 10 to 15 drops. With 390mg in the bottle at $59.90, it costs $1.54 per 10mg, the highest in this comparison. Elite Supps dispatches the same day for orders placed before 1pm and ships free over $150.

• Suits: people who want to dose by the drop and who value a testing statement on the listing.
• Doesn’t suit: anyone avoiding alcohol, and anyone who wants the lowest cost per 10mg.

#5. Blue Brain Methylene Blue at Supplement Mart: lowest sticker price

Blue Brain is $49.95 at Supplement Mart, the lowest bottle price in the comparison. It is 15mg per ml in a 30ml bottle, 450mg in total, which works out at $1.11 per 10mg. So the cheapest bottle is not the cheapest methylene blue.

The directions say “Adults: Take 1 serve, daily”, but we couldn’t find a serve size in the listing text, so you have to work out your own dose from the strength. We also didn’t find a grade or testing statement in the page text. Supplement Mart offers click and collect, runs warehouses on the east and west coasts, and ships free over $99.

• Suits: shoppers who already buy sports nutrition from Supplement Mart and want to pick it up in store.
• Doesn’t suit: anyone who wants a stated serve on the label.

#6. ABLABS Methylene Blue 10mg Capsules: biggest packs, ships from the UK

ABLABS sells 10mg capsules on Etsy in packs from 30 to 360, and the listing claims USP grade and 99.9% purity. The 90-capsule pack is $78.42, or $0.87 per 10mg, and the 360-capsule pack at $254.92 brings that down to about $0.71. The 60-capsule size was sold out when we checked.

It ranks last because it ships from the United Kingdom. The delivery window shown to us ran up to 10 days, against same-day or next-day dispatch from the Australian sellers. We didn’t find a certificate of analysis in the listing.

• Suits: people buying a large quantity who don’t mind waiting.
• Doesn’t suit: anyone who wants local dispatch and an Australian seller to deal with.

Capsules or liquid: which format suits you

Both of our formats cost $1.00 per 10mg at the single-bottle price, so the choice comes down to how you want to take it.

What the human research on methylene blue shows

Interest in methylene blue as a supplement rests on a small set of human studies, most of them from one research group at the University of Texas.

• Memory and attention, one dose. In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Radiology in 2016, 26 healthy adults aged 22 to 62 were given either a single oral dose of 280mg of USP methylene blue (about 4mg/kg) or a placebo. One hour later, MRI scans showed more activity during attention and short-term memory tasks, and methylene blue was linked to 7% more correct answers during memory retrieval (Rodriguez and colleagues).
• Brain connectivity. A companion paper in Brain Imaging and Behavior (2017) reported that a single low oral dose changed task-related blood flow and strengthened resting-state connections between regions linked to perception and memory.

What hasn’t been shown matters as much. No trial has tested 10mg a day, or daily use over months, for memory or focus in healthy people. The 280mg dose in the Radiology trial is 28 times one of our capsules. These were small imaging studies of a single dose, and they show a change in brain activity, not a lasting benefit. Every participant given methylene blue in that trial reported blue urine afterwards.

Safety: who should not take methylene blue

Read this before you buy any methylene blue, ours included.

• Not with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or any other serotonergic medicine. Methylene blue can interact with these and cause serotonin syndrome, a serious reaction. A systematic review in Psychosomatics found 26 patients who became acutely confused after methylene blue infusions, and 24 of them were taking a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.
• Not with G6PD deficiency, because of the risk of haemolysis (the breakdown of red blood cells).
• Not in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
• Not for anyone under 18.
• It can colour your urine blue or green. This happens with capsules and liquid alike.
• If you take any prescription medicine, talk to your doctor before you start.
