Quick answer: TMG powder and TMG capsules hold the same molecule, betaine anhydrous, and no study shows either form is absorbed better at the same dose. The choice is practical. Powder costs less per gram and lets you take any amount, but it needs weighing, tastes faintly sweet and salty, and can clump in humid weather. Capsules give the same dose every day with no taste and no equipment. This guide compares TMG powder vs capsules for Australian buyers in 2026, and our pick for most people is capsules, specifically Eternal Elixir TMG 2000mg. Three capsules give 2,000 mg, a 90-capsule bottle is 30 serves for $44.99, and it ships from Sydney within 24 hours. Eternal Elixir makes it. If the lowest cost per gram matters most to you, a powder such as Switch Nutrition’s TMG costs well under half as much per gram.

What TMG powder and capsules cost in Australia (as of Sep 2026)
Prices are from each seller’s own product page, checked in September 2026. Label serves run from 500 mg a scoop to 2,000 mg a serve, so the fair comparison is cost per 2,000 mg, which divides the price by the total TMG in the pack. Eternal Elixir makes TMG 2000mg and it is our pick. Every figure for the other products comes from their own labels and listings.
| Product | Form | Price (AUD) | Pack | Label serve | Cost per 2,000 mg | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eternal Elixir TMG 2000mg (our pick) | Capsules | $44.99 | 90 capsules, 30 serves | 3 capsules = 2,000 mg | $1.50 | View TMG 2000mg |
| Switch Nutrition TMG | Powder | $44.95 | 150 g, 150 serves | 1 to 3 scoops of 1 g daily | $0.60 | Switch Nutrition |
| myBrainCo TMG Powder 100g | Powder | $29.95 | 100 g, 100 serves | 1 scoop of about 1 g, do not exceed | $0.60 | myBrainCo |
| Simply Nootropics TMG Powder (100g) | Powder | $70.00 | 100 g | 2 scoops = 1,000 mg, do not exceed | $1.40 | Simply Nootropics |
| Bulk Nutrients TMG Capsules | Capsules | $29.00 | 120 x 600 mg | 1 to 2 capsules (600 to 1,200 mg) | $0.81 | Bulk Nutrients |
| Naturecan TMG Supplement | Capsules | $34.00 | 60 x 686 mg | 1 capsule (686 mg) | $1.65 | Naturecan |
Powder is the cheaper way to buy TMG by weight. Ours costs more per gram than the Switch and myBrainCo powders and Bulk Nutrients’ capsules, and less than Naturecan’s capsules. Only two labels in this table reach 2,000 mg a day as written: ours and Switch’s. Simply Nootropics and myBrainCo both say not to exceed their serve, which is 1,000 mg and about 1 g a day. Simply Nootropics orders from Australia are processed and shipped by its New Zealand store. For a ranked comparison that also covers DoNotAge, see our guide to the best TMG supplements in Australia.
Dose accuracy: a scoop is an estimate, a capsule is fixed
How much you take matters more than the format, because the effect of TMG depends on dose. In a placebo-controlled trial published in The Journal of Nutrition, four groups of 19 healthy adults took 1.5 g, 3 g or 6 g of betaine a day, or a placebo, for six weeks. Fasting plasma homocysteine ended 12%, 15% and 20% lower than placebo at the three doses (Olthof and colleagues, 2003). The response rose with the dose, so it’s worth knowing what you actually take.
Why a scoop is only an estimate
A scoop measures volume, but a dose is a weight. How much TMG a scoop holds depends on particle size, how firmly the powder has settled, whether you level it and how much moisture it has picked up. myBrainCo’s own directions describe its scoop as “approximately 1 g”. Scoops also differ between brands. Switch’s scoop is 1 g, while Simply Nootropics’ label gives 1,000 mg for two scoops, so a scoop from one tub isn’t a scoop from another.
The fix is a kitchen scale that reads to 0.01 g. Weighed, powder is accurate and more flexible than any capsule. Unweighed, it’s a reasonable guess, and a teaspoon has the same problem.
What a capsule fixes, and what it doesn’t
With capsules, the dose is set when the capsule is filled, not at your kitchen bench. Three Eternal Elixir TMG capsules give 2,000 mg, the same on day one and day thirty, and that serve sits inside the 1.5 to 6 g range from the trial above.
The trade-off is the step size. Each of our capsules holds about 667 mg, so you can take roughly 667 mg, 1,333 mg or 2,000 mg, but not 2.5 g exactly, and a large dose means a lot of capsules. If you’re still working out how much to take, our TMG dosage guide covers the ranges used in research.
Taste: what TMG powder is actually like
Betaine isn’t tasteless. PubChem’s chemical record for betaine lists its taste as sweet, and a food-additive description in the same record calls it savoury. myBrainCo describes its powder as “naturally mild, slightly sweet”, and Simply Nootropics calls the taste neutral. In plain water, expect a mild sweetness with a faintly salty edge.
TMG dissolves easily, so the taste mostly disappears in juice, a smoothie or a protein shake. In one human study the doses were simply stirred into 150 mL of orange juice. Simply Nootropics’ label says to mix its powder with water or a cold drink and not with hot drinks. Capsules avoid the question entirely.
Handling: TMG powder and Australian humidity
Betaine anhydrous pulls water out of the air. The Merck Index description quoted in PubChem calls it deliquescent, which means that left open it can absorb enough moisture to start dissolving. A tub opened every morning slowly takes on water and can clump, from soft lumps to a solid cake, and a humid Brisbane or Darwin summer is harder on it than a Hobart winter. Damp powder also gives you slightly less TMG per gram, because some of that weight is water.
The brands say much the same on their labels. myBrainCo’s directions say to always use a dry spoon, reseal after use and finish the tub within 150 days of opening. A few habits help:
- Close the lid straight after each use, and only use a dry scoop.
- Keep the tub somewhere cool and dry, away from the kettle, the dishwasher and the bathroom.
- Leave any desiccant sachet in the tub.
- Decant a week’s supply into a small airtight jar so the main tub is opened less often.
Capsules aren’t immune to humidity, but the TMG is sealed inside a shell and the bottle stays closed between doses, so your whole supply isn’t meeting the air every morning. Bulk Nutrients’ capsule label still asks for storage in a cool, dry place below 30°C, which is sensible for any supplement.
Convenience and travel
Capsules take ten seconds: three from the bottle with a glass of water and a meal, which is how our label says to take them. They fit in a pill organiser next to anything else you take, and that often decides it for people who also take an NAD+ precursor. We explain that pairing in why NMN and TMG are often taken together.
Powder needs a scale, a drink and a dry place for the tub. That’s easy if you already make a morning shake and a chore if you don’t. Travelling with powder means weighing doses into small containers before you go.
The fair counterpoint is that some people find three capsules a day tedious, and for them a drink is the easier habit. You won’t feel TMG working on any given day, so the format you’re still using in week eight is the right one.
Does TMG powder or capsules absorb better?
No study has compared TMG powder with TMG capsules. Betaine is a small molecule that dissolves readily in water, a vegetable capsule shell breaks down after you swallow it, and the same compound reaches your bloodstream either way.
What changes blood levels is the dose. In a randomised crossover study of 10 healthy adults, single doses of 1 g, 3 g and 6 g of betaine raised serum betaine straight away and in proportion to the dose. The 3 g and 6 g doses lowered plasma homocysteine within 2 hours, and the 1 g dose didn’t (Schwab and colleagues, 2006). So the thing to get right is how much TMG you take and how consistently, not whether it came in a shell or a tub.
Cost per gram: the honest arithmetic
To compare any TMG product, work out what you pay per gram of TMG:
Cost per gram = price ÷ grams of TMG in the pack
For capsules, grams of TMG = number of serves × grams per serve. Our bottle is 30 serves of 2,000 mg, so it holds 60 g of TMG. At $44.99 that’s $0.75 per gram, or $1.50 a day at the label serve. Two bottles take 10% off, three take 15% and five take 20%, and shipping is free on orders over $100.
Where powder wins
Powder is cheaper per gram because you aren’t paying for capsules to be filled. In our price check, Switch Nutrition’s 150 g tub at $44.95 and myBrainCo’s 100 g tub at $29.95 both work out at about $0.30 per gram, well under half our price per gram. If the lowest cost per gram is your priority and you’ll keep scooping, powder is the better buy.
Two adjustments keep the comparison fair. First, add the one-off cost of a scale and any powder you lose to clumping. Second, divide by grams of betaine anhydrous, not grams of product. Flavoured blends are diluted by flavouring, and betaine monohydrate carries bound water, so a gram of it supplies less betaine. Betaine HCl is a different ingredient altogether. Our explainer on betaine anhydrous vs TMG vs betaine HCl shows how to tell them apart on a label.

Who should choose TMG powder, and who should choose capsules
Choose TMG powder if:
- You take large or unusual doses. A six-week trial in trained men used 2.5 g of betaine a day (Cholewa and colleagues, 2013), and the homocysteine trial above went up to 6 g, which would be nine of our capsules. Powder handles those amounts in one measure.
- You already mix a daily drink, which hides the taste and adds no time.
- Cost per gram is your priority and you’re happy to own a scale.
- You want to adjust in small steps, for example starting lower to see how your stomach handles it.
- You dislike swallowing capsules.
One caution: powder makes more easy, and more isn’t automatically better. Pooled data from randomised trials in healthy people found that 6 g of betaine a day for six weeks raised LDL cholesterol by 0.36 mmol/L and triglycerides by 0.14 mmol/L compared with placebo (Olthof and colleagues, 2005). A 2022 meta-analysis found that doses under 4 g a day lowered homocysteine without that effect on blood lipids (Ashtary-Larky and colleagues, 2022). Talk to your doctor before taking a high dose.
Choose TMG capsules if:
- You want exactly 2,000 mg every day without weighing anything.
- You’d rather not taste it.
- You live somewhere humid, or would rather not manage storage.
- You travel, or already take other capsules and want TMG in the same routine.
Whichever format you choose, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, take prescription medicines or have a medical condition. The myBrainCo and Naturecan labels both say their TMG isn’t suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Why we sell TMG as capsules
We sell TMG as capsules because a fixed, tasteless dose fits the routine of people who already take capsules such as NMN or NR each morning, and it takes the weighing and storage problems out of the picture.
Label facts: 90 vegetable capsules per bottle, 30 serves. Take 3 capsules daily with a meal, giving 2,000 mg of trimethylglycine (betaine anhydrous). The other ingredients are rice flour and the vegetable capsule.
At $44.99, that’s $1.50 a serve. It costs more per gram than powder, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What you pay for is a studied dose with nothing to measure, from a supplier that also sells the NAD+ precursors TMG is often paired with: NMN 500mg at one capsule a day, and Pure NR 500mg. Orders ship from Sydney within 24 hours, with a 30-day money-back guarantee, Afterpay, and free shipping over $100.
- Suits you if you want 2,000 mg a day without measuring, and you’d like your TMG and NMN or NR in one order.
- Doesn’t suit you if you want the lowest cost per gram, plan to take well over 2 g a day, or would rather not swallow three capsules.
The verdict on TMG powder vs capsules
- Our pick: capsules, and specifically Eternal Elixir TMG 2000mg, $44.99 for 90 capsules. A fixed 2,000 mg serve with no taste or clumping, and Sydney dispatch.
- Lowest cost per gram: powder. Switch Nutrition’s and myBrainCo’s tubs work out at about $0.60 per 2,000 mg, and Switch’s label allows up to 3 g a day.
- Cheapest capsule per gram: Bulk Nutrients TMG Capsules, $0.81 per 2,000 mg, though the label’s 1 to 2 capsules give 600 to 1,200 mg.
Either way, check that the label says trimethylglycine or betaine anhydrous, and compare on cost per gram, not price per tub. Frequently asked questions
Is TMG powder better than capsules?
Neither is better for what your body receives. Both are betaine anhydrous, and no study shows either is absorbed better at the same dose. Powder is cheaper per gram and more flexible. Capsules give a fixed dose with no taste and no weighing, which is why they’re our pick for most people.
Which TMG supplement is best?
Our pick is Eternal Elixir TMG 2000mg. Three capsules give 2,000 mg, inside the 1.5 to 6 g range used in the main human trial, and a 90-capsule bottle is $44.99 and ships from Sydney. Eternal Elixir makes it. If you want the lowest cost per gram, Switch Nutrition’s TMG powder costs about $0.60 per 2,000 mg and its label allows up to 3 g a day.

Is TMG powder cheaper than capsules?
Usually, per gram. Divide the price by the grams of TMG in the pack. Our capsules work out at $0.75 per gram ($44.99 for 60 g of TMG). In our September 2026 price check, the Switch Nutrition and myBrainCo powders came in at about $0.30 per gram.
Should you take TMG every day?
The human trials gave betaine every day, for six weeks in the main homocysteine trial and for up to 24 weeks in others. Steady daily use is how the studied effects were seen. Doses of 4 g a day or more have raised total cholesterol in trials, so stay at the label serve unless your doctor advises otherwise.
How do I measure 2,000 mg of TMG powder?
Weigh 2.00 g on a digital scale that reads to 0.01 g. A scoop or teaspoon measures volume, and what it weighs depends on how the powder has settled and how much moisture it holds. Scoop sizes also differ by brand, from about 1 g for Switch and myBrainCo to 500 mg for Simply Nootropics.
Does TMG powder absorb faster than capsules?
There’s no good evidence that it does in any way that matters. In a pharmacokinetic study in healthy adults, betaine stirred into orange juice raised serum betaine straight away, in proportion to the dose. No study has compared that with capsules, and a vegetable capsule shell breaks down soon after you swallow it.
Why does TMG powder clump?
Betaine anhydrous is hygroscopic, which means it pulls moisture from the air. A tub that’s opened often, kept somewhere humid or scooped with a damp spoon will clump. Keep the lid tight, use a dry scoop and store the tub somewhere cool and dry.
