TUDCA for Athletes: How Bile Acid Support Can Improve Recovery and Performance

TUDCA for Athletes: How Bile Acid Support Can Improve Recovery and Performance – Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg bottle

Last updated: September 28, 2026 · Originally published: March 21, 2026 · By Eternal Elixir Editorial

Quick answer: TUDCA for athletes is popular as liver and recovery support, but the evidence is thinner than gym marketing suggests. TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is a bile acid your body makes in small amounts. No published trial has tested it in athletes or measured its effect on performance or recovery. The human data come from clinical studies in other groups, where it was well tolerated at 500 to 1,750mg a day and, in one small trial, improved insulin sensitivity in liver and muscle. If you train hard and want a simple daily TUDCA, our pick is Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg: one capsule a day with a meal, 90 capsules to a bottle, $0.67 a day.

Eternal Elixir makes the TUDCA 500mg in this guide, and it is our pick. Below we cover what TUDCA is, why heavy training can make your liver blood tests look worse than they are, what the research does and doesn’t show, how the TUDCA products sold in Australia compare, and who should avoid it. For a general overview, see our guide to the benefits of TUDCA supplements.

What TUDCA is

Bile acids are made in the liver from cholesterol, stored in the gallbladder and released into the gut when you eat. They help you digest fat and absorb fat-soluble nutrients. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is one of these bile acids, and TUDCA is UDCA joined to the amino acid taurine. That makes it more water-soluble than UDCA. Both are found naturally in human bile in small amounts.

UDCA itself has a long history as a prescription medicine, which is one reason TUDCA attracts interest. But a prescription medicine used under medical care for specific conditions is not the same thing as a supplement for healthy people who train, and the research reflects that gap. Our guide to TUDCA vs UDCA explains the chemistry in more detail.

Training, your liver and your blood tests

This is the part of the story that matters most for athletes, and it isn’t about TUDCA at all. Hard training can change the results of standard liver blood tests, even when your liver is fine.

In a Swedish study, 15 healthy men who were active but didn’t usually lift weights did a one-hour weightlifting session. Two liver enzymes, AST and ALT, rose significantly and stayed up for at least seven days. Creatine kinase and myoglobin, markers of muscle damage, rose even more. Bilirubin, GGT and ALP, which are more specific to the liver and bile ducts, stayed in the normal range (Pettersson 2008).

The reason is that AST and ALT are also found in muscle. When you damage muscle in training, some of these enzymes leak into the blood and look like a liver signal on a standard panel. The authors concluded that heavy weightlifting should be considered as a cause of raised liver tests in people with no symptoms.

What that means in practice:

  • Tell your doctor you lift or train hard before you get liver function tests.
  • If you want a clean baseline, avoid a heavy session for a few days before the blood draw, and ask whether creatine kinase should be checked too.
  • A raised ALT or AST after training is a reason to talk to your doctor, not a reason to self-treat with a supplement.

Our article on signs your liver needs support covers when a blood result is worth following up.

What the research on TUDCA shows, and what it doesn’t

The cell and animal research

Much of TUDCA’s reputation comes from its role as a “chemical chaperone”. Inside cells, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) folds new proteins. When it is overloaded, a stress response called ER stress follows. In a well-known 2006 study in Science, TUDCA and another chaperone reduced ER stress in cells and in mice with a higher body weight, and restored the mice’s insulin action in liver, muscle and fat tissue (Ozcan 2006). That study was in mice, not people.

The human research

The closest thing to an athlete-relevant human trial is Kars 2010. Twenty adults aged about 48, all with a higher body weight, took 1,750mg of TUDCA a day or a placebo for four weeks. With TUDCA, insulin sensitivity in the liver and in muscle rose by about 30%, and insulin signalling in muscle improved, while nothing changed with placebo. Insulin sensitivity in fat tissue didn’t change. Notably, the markers of ER stress in muscle didn’t change either, so the result doesn’t prove the chaperone mechanism works the same way in people.

Other human trials were run in patients under medical care, and they mostly tell us about tolerability:

  • Crosignani 1996. 24 adults took 500, 1,000 or 1,500mg of TUDCA a day for six months. Diarrhoea was the only side effect reported.
  • Ma 2016. 199 adults took 750mg a day of TUDCA or UDCA for 24 weeks. Both were well tolerated, with similar rates of adverse events, and itching rose in the UDCA group but not with TUDCA.

What hasn’t been shown

  • No trial has tested TUDCA in athletes or in people doing structured training.
  • No human study has shown that TUDCA speeds recovery, reduces soreness, or improves strength or endurance.
  • No human study has shown that TUDCA improves absorption of vitamins or protein in healthy people. The bile-flow argument is a reasonable theory, not a measured result.
  • The muscle result in Kars 2010 was in adults with a higher body weight, not in lean, trained people.

So the honest summary is: TUDCA is a well-tolerated bile acid with interesting human data on insulin action and good tolerability data, and no direct evidence for athletic performance.

Where TUDCA fits for athletes

With that evidence in mind, these are the realistic reasons an athlete might take TUDCA:

  • General liver and bile support. Some people want a daily bile acid alongside a high-protein, high-training lifestyle. That is a reasonable personal choice, as long as you don’t expect a performance effect.
  • Heavy fat intake. Bile acids help digest fat, which is why some athletes on high-fat diets take TUDCA with their largest meal. Remember this hasn’t been measured in trials.
  • A long-term routine. The tolerability data support steady daily use at label doses, and a 90-capsule bottle covers three months.

A note on “cycle support”. TUDCA is often marketed to people taking oral anabolic steroids or other performance drugs as liver protection. There is no evidence that TUDCA makes those drugs safe for the liver. If you use them, TUDCA isn’t a substitute for medical care: see your doctor and get proper monitoring.

How to read it: Eternal Elixir has the lowest cost per 500mg and the largest bottle of the 500mg capsules here. Anabolix matches our daily cost at one capsule, but that capsule holds half as much TUDCA, and its label allows up to three a day. Emrald Labs and Zombie Labs suit people who want a smaller 250mg daily dose. OHC Longevity links a certificate of analysis on its product page. Nutricost is the smallest bottle at 30 capsules.

Who each option suits

  • Eternal Elixir TUDCA 500mg. Suits anyone who wants 500mg in one capsule a day and a three-month bottle. Doesn’t suit someone who wants a lower 250mg dose.
  • Anabolix Nutrition TUDCA. Suits people who want to start at 250mg with room to adjust within the label. Its 90 capsules last 90 days at one a day.
  • Emrald Labs TUDCA. Suits someone who wants a single 250mg capsule a day in a vegetarian capsule. Its label says healthy adults only and not for under 18s.
  • Zombie Labs TUDCA. Suits someone already ordering from a sports retailer who wants 250mg a day with food.
  • Nutricost TUDCA. Suits someone who wants to try 500mg for a month. It uses gelatine capsules, so it doesn’t suit vegetarians.
  • OHC Longevity TUDCA. Suits buyers who want to read a certificate of analysis before buying. It costs more than twice ours per 500mg.

How to take TUDCA as an athlete

  1. Follow the label. For our TUDCA that is one 500mg capsule a day with a meal. A meal that contains some fat is a sensible choice, since that is when bile is released.
  2. Don’t stack doses. More isn’t better. The trials above used a range of doses under medical supervision, and a supplement label dose is the limit for self-use.
  3. Keep a steady routine. Take it at the same meal each day.
  4. Get blood tests the smart way. If you want to track liver markers, test before you start and again after a few months, and avoid heavy training in the days before each test so muscle enzymes don’t cloud the result.
  5. Tell your doctor. Mention TUDCA and your training load whenever you get blood work.

Who should avoid TUDCA

  • Anyone under 18, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone with a gallbladder, bile duct or liver condition, or anyone being treated for one. Speak to your doctor first.
  • Anyone taking prescription medicine, including medicines that bind bile acids or lower cholesterol. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
  • Anyone who gets persistent diarrhoea or stomach pain on TUDCA. Stop and see your doctor.

TUDCA vs milk thistle, NAC and glutathione for athletes

Athletes often compare TUDCA with other liver-focused supplements. They work differently. Milk thistle is a plant extract, NAC is a building block for glutathione, and glutathione is an antioxidant your cells make. TUDCA is the only bile acid in the group. None of them has been shown to improve athletic performance.

Frequently asked questions

Can TUDCA improve athletic performance?

There is no evidence that it does. No published trial has tested TUDCA in athletes or measured strength, endurance or recovery. The human data cover insulin sensitivity in adults with a higher body weight and tolerability in patients. Think of TUDCA as general bile and liver support, not as a performance supplement.

Who should avoid TUDCA?

Anyone under 18, anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone with a gallbladder, bile duct or liver condition should avoid it unless their doctor advises otherwise. If you take any prescription medicine, particularly medicines that bind bile acids or lower cholesterol, ask your doctor or pharmacist first.

What are the benefits of TUDCA for men?

The benefits are the same for men and women. TUDCA is a bile acid that supports normal bile flow and fat digestion. In a small four-week trial in adults with a higher body weight, 1,750mg a day raised insulin sensitivity in liver and muscle by about 30%. There are no male-specific benefits shown in trials.

Does TUDCA mess with hormones?

We found no human study showing that TUDCA changes testosterone, oestrogen or other sex hormones. It is a bile acid, and the human trials measured liver markers, insulin action and side effects rather than hormones. If you are on any hormone treatment, check with your doctor before adding a supplement.

Is it okay to take TUDCA every day?

Daily use is how TUDCA has been studied, in trials lasting from four weeks to six months, and it was well tolerated at the doses used. Take it at the label dose, which for our TUDCA is one 500mg capsule a day with a meal, and don’t exceed it. If you plan to take it for many months, check in with your doctor and get periodic blood tests.

How quickly will I notice effects from TUDCA?

Most people won’t feel TUDCA working, because its main role is in bile and liver processes you can’t sense. The human trial on insulin sensitivity measured changes after four weeks. If you’re tracking blood markers, compare tests a few months apart and avoid heavy training in the days before each test.
