Quick Answer
If you are choosing one, our pick is tongkat ali, and specifically Eternal Elixir Tongkat Ali 2000mg. Tongkat ali has randomised human trials behind it for testosterone and stress hormones. Turkesterone has almost none: the only turkesterone trial we found gave 11 young men single doses and saw no significant change in the markers measured. Our tongkat ali is a 200:1 extract, 90 capsules for $39.99, three capsules a day, which is $1.33 a day. We don’t currently stock turkesterone.
Eternal Elixir makes Tongkat Ali 2000mg, so read this as our pick with the working shown. Competitor prices were read from each live listing on 25 September 2026.

Tongkat ali and turkesterone are usually sold side by side to the same buyer, but they are very different supplements. Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a South-East Asian root studied mainly for testosterone and stress hormones. Turkesterone is a plant ecdysteroid from Ajuga turkestanica, sold mainly to lifters as a muscle builder.
The gap that matters most is the evidence. This guide sets out what the human trials on each actually found, what they cost in Australia, whether you can take them together, and which to buy first depending on your goal. Read it by your goal. If your interest is testosterone, energy or stress, tongkat ali is the one with human data. If your interest is muscle, the honest position is that turkesterone hasn’t been shown to build muscle in people yet, and a proven basic such as creatine has far more behind it. Our comparison of turkesterone vs creatine goes into that.
What tongkat ali is, and what the research shows
Tongkat ali is a shrub native to South-East Asia, and its root has a long history as a traditional tonic. Supplements use a water extract of the root, often described by a concentration ratio such as 200:1 or by a marker compound such as eurycomanone.
Testosterone
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in Medicina found nine clinical studies of tongkat ali and pooled five randomised trials. Men taking tongkat ali had significantly higher total testosterone than controls, and the effect held in the subgroup of men with low starting levels (Leisegang et al., 2022). The authors called it promising and said more research was needed.
Stress hormones and mood
In a four-week randomised trial, 63 moderately stressed adults (32 men, 31 women) took 200mg a day of a standardised tongkat ali water extract or a placebo. The tongkat ali group had 16% lower cortisol exposure and 37% higher testosterone measured in saliva, and scored better on tension, anger and confusion (Talbott et al., Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2013). The extract’s maker funded the study.
Older adults and strength
In a five-week pilot study, 25 physically active adults aged 57 to 72 (13 men, 12 women) took 400mg of tongkat ali extract a day. Total and free testosterone and handgrip strength rose in both men and women (Henkel et al., Phytotherapy Research, 2014). There was no placebo group, so treat it as a lead.
Taken together, tongkat ali has a small but consistent body of human trials at 200mg to 400mg a day of standardised extracts, lasting a few weeks to a few months. We cover the wider research in tongkat ali benefits in Australia, and how it compares with other options in our guide to natural testosterone support supplements in Australia.
Add Tongkat Ali 2000mg to cart · $39.99What turkesterone is, and what the research shows
Turkesterone is one of a family of plant compounds called ecdysteroids. They are chemically steroids, but they are not anabolic-androgenic steroids, and researchers think ecdysteroids act through a different receptor, based mainly on laboratory and animal work. Much of the interest in turkesterone comes from Soviet-era rat studies and from its close relative, ecdysterone.
The turkesterone trial
The only human turkesterone trial we found is small. In a randomised, single-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 11 healthy young men took single doses of 1,000mg or 2,000mg of a turkesterone supplement, or a placebo. Over 24 hours there was no significant change in IGF-1 (a growth-related hormone), resting metabolic rate, or blood fat and sugar measures compared with placebo, and the doses were well tolerated (Harris et al., Muscles, 2024). It measured single doses, not weeks of training, so it can’t tell you whether turkesterone builds muscle. It does show the idea is still untested.
The ecdysterone trial
The trial most turkesterone marketing leans on used a different compound. In a 10-week strength-training study of 46 young men, those given ecdysterone supplements gained significantly more muscle mass and bench-press strength than those who weren’t (Isenmann et al., Archives of Toxicology, 2019). The authors went as far as arguing that ecdysterone should be added to the list of substances prohibited in sport. That result is for ecdysterone, not turkesterone, and we found no second trial confirming it.
Label accuracy
A 2026 laboratory analysis of 13 ecdysteroid supplements found that several products standardised to 80% to 95% ecdysterone contained far less than declared, and that turkesterone content varied among products sold as standardised extracts (Todorova et al., Molecules, 2026). If you buy turkesterone, the amount on the label may not be what is in the capsule.
What has not been shown
- We found no human trial showing that turkesterone increases muscle, strength or testosterone.
- No long-term human safety data for turkesterone exists that we could find.
- No trial has tested tongkat ali and turkesterone taken together.
Which is better for testosterone, and which for muscle?
For testosterone, tongkat ali. It is the only one of the two with randomised trials measuring testosterone, and a meta-analysis that found a significant rise. Turkesterone is not marketed as a testosterone supplement, and the one turkesterone trial didn’t measure it.
For muscle, neither has strong evidence. Tongkat ali has small studies, such as a pilot in older adults that found better handgrip strength. Turkesterone has no human muscle data of its own. If building muscle is the goal, training, protein and creatine are where the evidence sits. We compare the two in turkesterone vs creatine for natural muscle building.

Add Tongkat Ali 2000mg to cart · $39.99Can you take tongkat ali and turkesterone together?
People do, and combined products such as the HumanX capsule exist. What we can’t tell you is whether the combination does anything more than either alone, because no trial has tested it. We found nothing in the published studies suggesting a harmful interaction between the two, but the absence of a study is not the same as proof of safety.
If you want to try both, add one at a time. Start with tongkat ali for a month, then add turkesterone, so you can tell what each is doing and which one caused any side effect. Talk to your doctor first if you take any prescription medicine, and see the safety notes below.
Dosage, timing and safety
Tongkat ali
The trials above used 200mg to 400mg a day of standardised water extracts for four to five weeks. Australian labels vary widely: the Emrald Labs capsule is 500mg of a 200:1 extract a day, and our label serve is three capsules, or 2,000mg of a 200:1 extract, taken on an empty stomach. Those amounts are of different extracts from the ones in the trials, so they can’t be compared milligram for milligram. Follow the label on the product you buy, and if you want to start lower, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Many people take tongkat ali in the morning, and some cycle it, for example five days on and two off. Our tongkat ali dosage guide and tongkat ali protocol guide cover timing and cycling, and how long tongkat ali takes to work covers what to expect.
Turkesterone
Australian labels we checked give 50mg to 60mg of turkesterone a day, from 500mg to 600mg of a 10% extract. The single-dose trial used 1,000mg and 2,000mg of a supplement product. There is no trial-based daily dose to aim for.
If you are drug-tested in sport, check your sport’s rules before taking any ecdysteroid product, given that the ecdysterone researchers argued for a ban and that label contents can differ from what is declared. We cover this in whether turkesterone can fail a drug test in Australia.
Who should check with a doctor first
- Anyone taking prescription medicines or with a diagnosed health condition.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women. The Bulk Nutrients turkesterone label says it is not for pregnant women, and we found no safety data for tongkat ali in pregnancy.
- Anyone under 18.
- Women considering tongkat ali, given its effects on hormones. Our guide to tongkat ali for women covers this.
Our tongkat ali side effects guide covers reported side effects in more detail.
Is turkesterone a steroid?
Chemically, yes: ecdysteroids share the steroid ring structure. But turkesterone is not an anabolic-androgenic steroid like testosterone or its synthetic versions, and it is sold as a dietary supplement. Researchers think ecdysteroids act through a different receptor from anabolic steroids, though that comes mainly from laboratory work. For athletes, the practical question is not the chemistry but whether your sport allows it, covered above.
Which should you buy first?
Eternal Elixir Tongkat Ali 2000mg is our pick if you are buying one of the two. Tongkat ali is the one with randomised human trials for testosterone and stress hormones, our label states the extract and serve, every batch is tested for heavy metals, and it costs $1.33 a day, or $1.13 a day when you buy three bottles with free shipping. It is dispatched in 1 business day with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
If your goal is purely muscle and you still want to try turkesterone, Bulk Nutrients’ capsule states its turkesterone content (50mg) and is the cheapest per day here at $0.49. Go in knowing there is no human trial showing it works. If you would rather take both in one capsule, HumanX combines them at $1.71 a day, with less tongkat ali by weight than the standalone products in our table.
For men over 35 who want a broader plan rather than one supplement, our natural testosterone optimisation protocol covers sleep, training and diet as well. Some men also add shilajit: our Shilajit 1000mg is $44.99 for 90 capsules, and our shilajit comparison covers the options.
Tongkat ali and turkesterone: frequently asked questions

Is tongkat ali or turkesterone better for testosterone?
Tongkat ali. A 2022 meta-analysis of five randomised trials found it raised total testosterone, including in men with low starting levels. Turkesterone is not marketed for testosterone, and its only human trial didn’t measure it.
What does turkesterone with tongkat ali do?
Nobody has tested the combination in a trial. On their own, tongkat ali has modest evidence for testosterone and stress hormones, and turkesterone has no human evidence for muscle yet. A combined product gives you both ingredients, not a proven extra effect.
Can you take tongkat ali with turkesterone?
Many people do, and we found no published reason to expect an interaction between them. Add one at a time so you can judge each, and talk to your doctor first if you take prescription medicines.
Does turkesterone count as a steroid?
It is a plant ecdysteroid, so chemically it has a steroid structure, but it is not an anabolic-androgenic steroid. If you are drug-tested in sport, check your sport’s rules before taking it.
What does turkesterone do to the body?
In the one human trial, single doses of 1,000mg and 2,000mg did not significantly change IGF-1, resting metabolic rate or blood fat and sugar measures over 24 hours, and were well tolerated. Claims about muscle growth come from animal studies and from trials of a related compound, ecdysterone.
How long do they take to work?
The tongkat ali trials above measured changes after four to five weeks, so give it at least a month. There is no human data on how long turkesterone takes, because it hasn’t been shown to work yet. See how long tongkat ali takes to work.
Which is better for men over 40?
Tongkat ali is the one with human data in older adults, including a pilot study in people aged 57 to 72. Our protocol for men over 35 shows where it fits alongside sleep, training and diet.
