Tongkat Ali Australia 2026: Benefits, Dosage & Buying

Tongkat Ali Australia 2026: Benefits, Dosage & Buying – Eternal Elixir Tongkat Ali 200:1 Extract 2000mg bottle

Last updated: September 26, 2026 · Originally published: June 26, 2026 · By Eternal Elixir Editorial

Quick answer: Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia, also sold as longjack) is a root extract from South-East Asia. In human trials, 100mg to 600mg a day of a water extract, taken for two weeks to six months, raised testosterone in several groups of men, lowered a stress-hormone marker in stressed adults and improved some wellbeing scores. Most of those trials used one patented extract, and several were funded or co-authored by the company that makes it. In Australia you can buy tongkat ali online from local brands, sports-nutrition stores and iHerb. Our pick is Eternal Elixir Tongkat Ali 200:1 Extract: 90 capsules for $39.99, with 2,000mg of 200:1 extract in each three-capsule serve, which is $1.33 a day, sent from Sydney within 24 hours. That serve is well above the trial doses, and the dosage section below explains what that means for you.

Eternal Elixir makes Tongkat Ali 200:1 Extract, and it is our pick in this guide. We read every other product’s figures on its own product page or on the Australian retailer page we link, in September 2026. We have not lab-tested any product here, ours included, and no published trial has tested our capsule or anyone else’s retail capsule. The studies below describe tongkat ali itself at the doses the researchers used. You can read who we are and how we source our range on our about page.

This page is our main tongkat ali guide for Australia. It covers what the root is, what the human trials found, how much people take, safety, and where to buy. If you have already decided to buy and only want the product-by-product comparison, go to our best tongkat ali supplements in Australia roundup, which compares eight products in detail.

What is tongkat ali?

Tongkat ali is the root of Eurycoma longifolia, a slender tree that grows in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. People across the region have boiled the root into a bitter tonic for generations, and it picked up names like “Malaysian ginseng” and “longjack” along the way. The Malaysian and Indonesian names are still on many labels.

The root contains a family of bitter compounds called quassinoids. The best known is eurycomanone, which is why some labels state a eurycomanone percentage. Researchers have also looked at other fractions of the root, and the extract used in most human trials is a freeze-dried hot-water extract sold under the name Physta. It is made by Biotropics Malaysia Berhad, which funded or co-authored several of the studies on this page. That matters when you read the results, and we flag it where it applies.

Which part of the plant is used

The trials used extracts of the root. Supplements sold in Australia come in three main forms: a plain ground root powder, a concentrated extract with a ratio such as 25:1, 100:1 or 200:1, and blends that mix tongkat ali with other herbs. The form changes what a milligram figure means, so a 400mg root-powder capsule and a 400mg extract capsule are not the same product. We explain ratios and eurycomanone further down.

Colour names on labels

You may see “yellow”, “black” or “red” tongkat ali in marketing. Whatever colour name a product uses, the studies below were done on Eurycoma longifolia root, so check that the botanical name is on the label. One survey of tongkat ali “hitam” (black) products sold in Malaysia is also the main published warning about mercury contamination, which we cover in the safety section.

Why Australians are looking at it

People usually look at tongkat ali to support energy, drive, training recovery and healthy testosterone as they get older, and women ask about it too. It usually sits alongside sleep, training and diet changes rather than replacing them, and many readers fold it into a wider longevity supplement routine. Our separate guides go further on what the research shows for each tongkat ali benefit and on tongkat ali for women.

How tongkat ali works in the body

Tongkat ali contains no testosterone. The idea is that it helps the body’s own hormone system, and the human trials give a mixed picture of how. Here is what has been measured in people, and what has only been seen in the lab.

SHBG and free testosterone

Most testosterone in the blood is bound to a carrier protein called sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). The unbound part is called free testosterone. In a small study of active older adults, SHBG fell in the women who took tongkat ali, and the authors think that is why their free testosterone rose (Henkel et al., 2014). Two other trials found no change in SHBG, one in older men and one in young men, even though testosterone went up (Chinnappan et al., 2021 and Chan et al., 2021). So lower SHBG is one possible route, not a settled one.

Testosterone production and the stress axis

In the trial in young men, luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone did not change while testosterone rose. The authors suggest the rise may come through the adrenal stress axis rather than the usual brain-to-testes signal, but they did not prove it (Chan et al., 2021). Two trials measured cortisol, the main stress hormone, and both saw it fall: salivary cortisol in stressed adults, and blood cortisol in the higher-dose group of ageing men (Talbott et al., 2013, and Chinnappan et al., 2021). Claims you may read about effects on specific cells in the testes or on the enzyme aromatase come from lab and animal work, not from people.

What tongkat ali does not do

It is not a hormone and not a stimulant. The trials measured changes over weeks, not hours, so don’t expect to feel something within the first day. It also works best, in the one six-month trial, alongside regular training: the men who trained three times a week and took tongkat ali had the largest improvements (Leitão et al., 2021). Because it does act on hormones, read the tongkat ali side effects and safety guide before you start.

Tongkat ali benefits backed by research

Tongkat ali has more human trials than most herbs sold for men’s health. They are mostly small, several were funded or co-authored by the maker of the Physta extract, and most lasted 12 weeks or less. With those limits in mind, here are the trials in people that we could verify.

Testosterone in men

This is the strongest signal. A 2022 systematic review found nine studies and pooled five randomised trials, and total testosterone rose significantly in men taking tongkat ali compared with placebo (Leisegang et al., 2022). The authors still say more research is needed. The largest single trial gave 105 men aged 50 to 70, all with testosterone below 300 ng/dL, either 100mg or 200mg of Physta or a placebo for 12 weeks. Total testosterone rose against placebo, from week 4 in the 200mg group. Free testosterone rose within both tongkat ali groups but did not differ from placebo (Chinnappan et al., 2021).

An earlier study gave 76 men with ageing-male symptoms 200mg of a standardised water extract for one month. The share of men with testosterone in the normal range rose from 35.5% to 90.8%, and the share with no symptom complaints rose from 10.5% to 71.7% (Tambi et al., 2012). There was no placebo group, so treat that result with care. In young healthy men, 600mg a day for two weeks also raised testosterone against placebo (Chan et al., 2021).

Stress, cortisol and mood

Talbott and colleagues screened adults for moderate stress and gave 63 of them 200mg of Physta or a placebo for four weeks. Salivary cortisol was 16% lower and salivary testosterone 37% higher than on placebo, and tension, anger and confusion scores improved (Talbott et al., 2013). One of the authors worked for the extract maker. The ageing-men trial also saw cortisol fall on 200mg, and fatigue scores fell in both doses (Chinnappan et al., 2021).

Libido and sexual wellbeing

In a 12-week trial, 109 men aged 30 to 55 took 300mg of Physta or a placebo. The tongkat ali group scored better on physical functioning than the placebo group, reported libido 14% higher by week 12, and had higher sperm motility and semen volume. Men with a BMI of 25 or more also lost more fat mass. All safety measures were similar to placebo (Ismail et al., 2012). For a benefit-by-benefit breakdown, see our tongkat ali benefits guide.

Strength and training

In active adults aged 57 to 72, 400mg a day for five weeks raised handgrip strength in both men and women (Henkel et al., 2014). In the ageing-men trial, muscle strength rose within both tongkat ali groups at 12 weeks (Chinnappan et al., 2021). The six-month trial is the most useful for people who train: 45 men were split into four groups, and the ones who trained three times a week and took 200mg of tongkat ali did best (Leitão et al., 2021). Training did a lot of the work, so read tongkat ali as a support for a training plan, not a substitute.

Immune markers

In Japan, 83 middle-aged adults with lower immune scores took 200mg of Physta or rice powder for four weeks. The tongkat ali group ended with higher immune vigour scores and more total, naive and CD4+ T cells than the placebo group, with no severe adverse events (George et al., 2016). It is one short trial, so it is a lead rather than an established benefit.

What the research has not shown

  • No trial we found lasted longer than six months.
  • No trial tested 2,000mg a day. The highest daily amount we found in a trial was 600mg, for two weeks.
  • Most positive trials used one extract, Physta, and several were funded or co-authored by its maker. Results may not carry over to other extracts.
  • Free testosterone did not beat placebo in the largest trial, and SHBG results disagree between studies.
  • No published trial has tested any retail tongkat ali capsule sold in Australia, ours included.

Tongkat ali for women

Tongkat ali is marketed mostly to men, but three of the trials above included women. Women make testosterone too, in smaller amounts, and it plays a part in energy, muscle and libido.

  • Stress: 31 of the 63 stressed adults in the Talbott trial were women, and the cortisol and mood results were reported for the whole group (Talbott et al., 2013).
  • Strength: 12 active women aged 57 to 72 took 400mg a day for five weeks. Their total and free testosterone and handgrip strength rose, and their SHBG fell (Henkel et al., 2014).
  • Menopause: 138 women aged 40 to 55 going through menopause took Physta 50mg, 100mg or a placebo for 12 weeks. On 100mg, their menopause quality-of-life scores improved by 33.9%, with gains in the physical and sexual parts of the questionnaire. Mood scores fell 38.6% on 100mg and 30.1% on placebo, a difference that was not statistically significant. Their reproductive hormone levels did not change (Muniandy et al., 2025). Two of the authors work for the extract maker.

The women’s trials used 50mg to 400mg a day, which is far below a 2,000mg serve. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive should not take tongkat ali, and any woman with a hormone-sensitive condition should speak with her doctor first. Our guide to tongkat ali for women in Australia covers dose and expectations in more detail.

Tongkat ali dosage: how much to take

The trials used 50mg to 600mg a day of a water extract, and most used 100mg to 400mg. The table sets out the amounts next to the people who took them.

How our serve compares with the trials

Our label directs three capsules a day, which gives 2,000mg of 200:1 extract. That is ten times the 200mg used in the stress trial, five times the 400mg in the older-adults study, and more than three times the highest amount we found in any trial (600mg). Even one capsule, about 667mg, is above that 600mg. No trial has tested 2,000mg a day, so the studies on this page tell you what tongkat ali did at lower amounts. They do not tell you what our full serve does, and they do not show that more is better.

If you would rather stay nearer the amounts studied, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about starting with fewer capsules than the label serve. The same applies to any product: a 500mg capsule of 200:1 extract, taken twice a day, is also above every trial dose we found.

Reading the milligrams on a label

Compare like with like. The trial figures are milligrams of extract. A root-powder product such as Solaray’s gives 800mg of plain root a day, which is not comparable with 800mg of extract. And extract ratios differ: a 25:1 extract and a 200:1 extract at the same milligram figure were made differently, and neither ratio tells you how much eurycomanone is inside. Our tongkat ali dosage guide for Australia walks through the maths for each goal.

How to take tongkat ali: timing, cycling and stacking

Every trial gave tongkat ali once a day, every day, for the whole study period. Taking it at the same time each day makes it easier to remember and easier to judge.

Timing and food

Follow the label of the product you buy, because labels differ. Our label says to take three capsules daily on an empty stomach. AKARALI’s product page says one or two capsules daily with water, preferably after meals. Many people take it first thing in the morning, which fits an empty-stomach label and is easy to remember. If an empty stomach doesn’t suit you, ask your pharmacist before changing how you take it.

Cycling

You will see advice to cycle tongkat ali, such as five days on and two days off, or a few months on and a few weeks off. No trial has compared cycling with daily use, so it is a personal choice rather than an evidence-based rule. The longest trial ran for six months of daily use (Leitão et al., 2021). The schedule popularised on podcasts is covered in our look at the Huberman tongkat ali protocol.

Stacking with other supplements

Shilajit is the most common partner. In a 90-day trial, healthy men aged 45 to 55 who took 250mg of purified shilajit twice a day had higher total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS than men on placebo (Pandit et al., 2016). No trial has tested shilajit and tongkat ali together, so the pairing is a practical one, not a proven combination. Our Shilajit 1000mg is a 20:1 extract with 20% fulvic acid, 1,000mg per two-capsule serve and 45 serves a bottle, which is double the daily amount in that trial. Its label also says to take it on an empty stomach, so the two fit the same routine.

Fadogia agrestis is often sold with tongkat ali. When we searched PubMed in September 2026 we found no human trial of fadogia, only rat studies, including one that looked at liver and kidney effects in male rats (Yakubu et al., 2009). Our guide to fadogia agrestis in Australia covers it in full. Tongkat ali is also compared with other herbs in our tongkat ali vs ashwagandha and tongkat ali vs shilajit for testosterone guides. If you take several supplements or any medicine, check the whole routine with your GP or pharmacist.

How long does tongkat ali take to work?

The trials give a rough timeline. In ageing men on 200mg, free testosterone rose within the group from week 2, total testosterone was higher than placebo from week 4, and symptom and fatigue scores had fallen at every check-in (Chinnappan et al., 2021). The stress trial measured its cortisol and testosterone changes after four weeks (Talbott et al., 2013). In young men, 600mg raised testosterone within two weeks (Chan et al., 2021).

So plan on four to eight weeks of daily use before you judge it, and up to 12 weeks for a fair test. Keep a short weekly note on sleep, energy, training recovery, mood and libido so you compare against a baseline rather than memory. A blood test before and after, arranged with your GP, is the only way to know what happened to your own testosterone. We map the timeline by goal in our article on how long tongkat ali takes to work.

Extract ratios and eurycomanone explained

An extract ratio such as 200:1 describes how the extract was made: roughly 200 parts of raw root were concentrated into one part of extract. It is a production figure. It does not tell you how much eurycomanone or any other compound ended up in the capsule, and two 200:1 extracts from different makers can differ.

A eurycomanone percentage is a measured figure. Among the products in our table, Anabolix states 2%, Tongkat Ali Australia states about 2%, and Evolution Botanicals states 1%. Our label states the 200:1 ratio and the amount, but not a eurycomanone percentage, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. Keep in mind that the trials did not pick extracts for high eurycomanone: the water extract in one Malaysian study contained about 0.03% eurycomanone (Salman et al., 2010). A higher percentage on a label is not proof that a product will match the trial results.

The practical reading is simple. Look for the botanical name, the form (extract or root powder), the ratio, the amount per serve and, if it is stated, the eurycomanone percentage. Then compare products on the same basis.

Is tongkat ali safe? Side effects and who should avoid it

In the trials we read, tongkat ali was well tolerated at 50mg to 600mg a day for up to six months. The 109-man trial found all safety measures similar to placebo (Ismail et al., 2012). The 105-man trial checked blood counts, blood fats, and liver and kidney function over 12 weeks and saw no clinically relevant changes (Chinnappan et al., 2021). The immune trial reported no severe adverse events (George et al., 2016), and the menopause trial saw no changes in vital signs or blood chemistry (Muniandy et al., 2025). These trials were small and short, so rarer side effects may not have shown up, and none tested amounts as high as 2,000mg a day. Our tongkat ali side effects guide covers what has been reported in more detail.

Medicine interactions

Tongkat ali can change how some medicines are absorbed. In 14 healthy young men, taking 200mg of a water extract with a single 80mg dose of the blood pressure medicine propranolol cut the amount of propranolol absorbed by 29% and its peak level by 42% (Salman et al., 2010). Other medicines have not been tested. If you take any prescription medicine, including anything for blood pressure, the heart or blood sugar, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Heavy metals

Roots take up what is in the soil. When researchers tested 100 products containing tongkat ali “hitam” sold in Malaysia, 26% contained mercury at 0.53 to 2.35 ppm (Ang and Lee, 2006). That survey is old and did not cover products sold in Australia today, but it is a good reason to ask any seller, us included, for a current batch certificate of analysis that covers heavy metals.

Who should not take tongkat ali

  • Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive.
  • Anyone under 18.
  • Anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition, unless their specialist agrees.
  • Anyone taking prescription medicines, until they have checked with their doctor or pharmacist.
  • Anyone with a kidney or liver condition, until they have checked with their doctor.

A supplement is not a substitute for a medical check. If you have symptoms you think might be low testosterone, see your GP for a blood test first. Some men use tongkat ali alongside lifestyle changes as part of a plan agreed with their doctor, but it does not replace medical care.

Tongkat ali vs other testosterone-support options

Most people weighing up tongkat ali are also looking at shilajit, fadogia agrestis or turkesterone. Here is how the human evidence compares, based on the studies we could verify.

How to read the table: our bottle has the most capsules of the 200:1 extracts listed and the lowest bottle price among them, and our serve carries the most extract. AKARALI says it uses Physta, the extract behind most of the trials on this page, and at one or two capsules it sits in the trial dose range, at a higher cost per day. Evolution Botanicals has the lowest cost per day, using a 25:1 extract. Tongkat Ali Australia and Anabolix state a eurycomanone percentage, which we don’t. Solaray is plain root powder, so its milligrams are not comparable with the extracts.

Is tongkat ali sold at Chemist Warehouse?

When Chemist Warehouse’s website was searched in September 2026, “tongkat” returned a men’s protein powder and no tongkat ali capsules. Stock can change, so check before you go. We cover the options in more detail in our article on tongkat ali and Chemist Warehouse. If AKARALI is the brand you know, our guide to AKARALI alternatives in Australia lines up other tongkat ali products against it.

Local seller or overseas marketplace?

Overseas marketplaces carry many brands, but delivery usually takes longer and returns are harder to arrange. Local sellers ship faster and are easier to contact if something goes wrong. Whichever you choose, check the label details in the next section before you pay.

How to choose a quality tongkat ali supplement

Run any product through these checks before you buy.

  • Botanical name: Eurycoma longifolia root, not just “tongkat ali” or a colour name.
  • Form: extract or root powder. The trials used extracts.
  • Ratio and amount per serve: for example “200:1, 500mg per capsule”. Work out the daily amount from the label serve.
  • Eurycomanone percentage: helpful if stated, but not proof of trial-level results, since the trial extracts were not chosen for high eurycomanone.
  • Batch testing: ask the seller for a current certificate of analysis that covers heavy metals.
  • Single ingredient or blend: a blend makes it harder to know how much tongkat ali you get.
  • Cost per day at the label serve, not cost per bottle.

Eternal Elixir Tongkat Ali 200:1: what you get

Here is our product on its label facts. Each bottle holds 90 capsules. Three capsules make one serve of 2,000mg of Eurycoma longifolia Jack extract 200:1, so a bottle lasts 30 days. The other ingredients are rice flour and a cellulose capsule. The label says to take three capsules daily on an empty stomach.

  • Price: $39.99 a bottle, which is $1.33 a day and $0.44 a capsule.
  • Price per gram of extract: a bottle holds 60 g of 200:1 extract, which works out at $0.67 per gram. For the other 200:1 products in the table, it is $1.63 for Tongkat Ali Australia, $2.33 for Emrald Labs, $4.58 for Anabolix and $7.42 for AKARALI. Ratio is not a potency test, so read this as a price comparison, not a strength ranking.
  • Multi-bottle savings: two bottles save 10% ($71.98), three save 15% ($101.97, which also clears the $100 free-shipping line), and five save 20% ($159.96).
  • Delivery and returns: orders ship from Sydney within 24 hours, with a 30-day money-back guarantee and Afterpay available.

Who it suits: adults who want a single-ingredient 200:1 tongkat ali extract at a low price per gram, from an Australian seller with fast dispatch, and who have read the dosage section above.

Who it doesn’t suit: anyone who wants the exact extract used in most trials (AKARALI says it uses it), anyone who wants a stated eurycomanone percentage (Tongkat Ali Australia and Anabolix state one), anyone after the lowest cost per day (Evolution Botanicals), and anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18 or on prescription medicines without their doctor’s advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tongkat ali supplement in Australia?

Our pick is Eternal Elixir Tongkat Ali 200:1 Extract. A 90-capsule bottle costs $39.99, each three-capsule serve carries 2,000mg of 200:1 extract, and it ships from Sydney within 24 hours. Among the 200:1 extracts we compared, it has the lowest bottle price and the lowest price per gram. Eternal Elixir makes it, so weigh that. If you want the extract used in most trials, AKARALI says it uses Physta. If you want the lowest cost per day, Evolution Botanicals works out at $0.58.

What happens if I take tongkat ali every day?

Daily use is how every trial gave it. In those trials, taken daily for two weeks to six months at 50mg to 600mg, testosterone rose in several groups of men, a stress-hormone marker fell in stressed adults, and safety tests were similar to placebo. Nobody has tested daily use for longer than six months, or at 2,000mg a day. Keep to the label, and talk to your doctor if you take medicines or plan to use it long term.

Does tongkat ali really increase testosterone?

In several trials, yes. A 2022 meta-analysis of five randomised trials found total testosterone rose in men taking tongkat ali compared with placebo. In the largest single trial, 105 men aged 50 to 70 had higher total testosterone than placebo from week 4 on 200mg a day, though free testosterone did not differ from placebo. Most positive trials used the Physta extract, and several were funded or co-authored by its maker.

Is tongkat ali hard on kidneys?

The trials that checked found no sign of it at the doses tested. In 105 men taking 100mg or 200mg a day for 12 weeks, kidney and liver function tests showed no clinically relevant changes, and a 12-week trial of 300mg found all safety measures similar to placebo. No trial has checked kidney function at higher doses or over longer periods. If you have a kidney condition, talk to your doctor before taking it.

How much tongkat ali should I take per day?

The trials used 50mg to 600mg a day of a water extract, most often 100mg to 400mg. Follow the label of the product you buy. Our label serve is three capsules, or 2,000mg of 200:1 extract, which is well above every trial dose we found. If you want to stay nearer the studied amounts, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about taking fewer capsules.

Can women take tongkat ali?

Women took part in three trials, at 50mg to 400mg a day. In women going through menopause, 100mg a day improved quality-of-life scores over 12 weeks without changing reproductive hormones, and in active older women 400mg a day raised handgrip strength over five weeks. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive should not take it.

Is Tongkat Ali Australia the same company as Eternal Elixir?

No. Tongkat Ali Australia (tongkataliaustralia.com) is a separate Queensland business. Its site lists a 60-capsule bottle of 500mg 200:1 extract at $49.00, states about 2% eurycomanone, and says its root comes from Sumatra, Indonesia. Eternal Elixir is a different Australian brand, and our Tongkat Ali 200:1 Extract is a 90-capsule bottle at $39.99.

How long before tongkat ali works?

In ageing men on 200mg a day, total testosterone was higher than placebo from week 4, and symptom and fatigue scores had improved at every check-in. The stress trial measured its changes after four weeks. Give it four to eight weeks of daily use, and up to 12 weeks for a fair test, before you decide.

Can I take tongkat ali with creatine or a pre-workout?

We found no trial that tested tongkat ali together with creatine, caffeine or a pre-workout, so there is no evidence either way on the combination. Tongkat ali is taken once a day for weeks, while a pre-workout is taken before training, so they work on different timescales. Check the full list of ingredients with your pharmacist, especially if a pre-workout contains several stimulants.

The verdict

Tongkat ali has a real, if limited, body of human research. Several small trials found higher testosterone in men, a lower stress-hormone marker in stressed adults and better wellbeing scores, mostly with one patented extract and mostly over 12 weeks or less. It is not a hormone, it takes weeks, and it seems to work best alongside training and sleep.

For most Australian buyers, our pick is Eternal Elixir Tongkat Ali 200:1 Extract. It gives the most 200:1 extract per bottle for the lowest bottle price in our comparison, it holds 90 capsules, and it ships from Sydney within 24 hours. Two honest caveats: the label serve is well above the trial doses, and our label does not state a eurycomanone percentage. If either matters to you, AKARALI (the extract most trials used) or Tongkat Ali Australia (about 2% eurycomanone stated) are the alternatives to look at.
