Quick answer: A minimalist skincare routine needs three things: a gentle wash, a moisturiser and, in the morning, a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Tallow and honey can cover the first two. Raw honey can work as a gentle evening cleanser, and a grass-fed tallow balm can be the moisturiser for your face, hands, lips and body. Sunscreen is the one product they cannot replace, so it stays in the cabinet. Our pick for the moisturiser step is Eternal Elixir Grass-Fed Tallow Balm, which blends grass-fed tallow with raw honey, beeswax, coconut oil and vitamin E, and costs $29.99.
Eternal Elixir makes the tallow balm recommended on this page. The routine below works with any plain tallow balm and any raw honey, and we point out where the evidence is thin.

What a minimalist skincare routine is, and what it isn’t
A minimalist routine uses as few products as your skin needs, not as few as possible at any cost. The skincare guides that rank for this topic, from dermatologist-led brands to health publishers, agree on the same core: wash gently, moisturise, and protect your skin from the sun during the day. Everything else, from toners to serums and masks, is optional and has to earn its place.
In Australia’s strong sun, the protection step is the one to keep no matter how far you cut back. The rest of this guide shows how tallow and honey handle the other two steps, and why they cannot handle the third.
Why fewer products can suit your skin
The outer layer of your skin holds water in with a thin barrier of fats packed between the cells. That barrier is made mostly of ceramides (about 50%), cholesterol (about 25%) and free fatty acids (about 15%), with very little else (Feingold and Elias, 2014). Harsh cleansers and a stack of strong active ingredients can disturb it, which is one reason a long routine can leave skin feeling tight, dry or reactive.
Each product you add also brings its own ingredient list, and with it more chances that one ingredient irritates your skin. Cutting back makes it easier to see what your skin actually responds to. That is the practical case for a minimalist routine: fewer variables, less to go wrong and less money spent.
Step 1: wash gently, with raw honey or a mild cleanser
In the morning, many people with normal or dry skin need nothing more than a splash of lukewarm water. In the evening you need to lift off sunscreen, sweat and the day’s grime.
Raw honey is one way to do that. It is mostly fructose and glucose, with small amounts of proteins, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. It has a long history in skin care as a humectant (it draws in water), an emollient and a soothing ingredient, and some of its antimicrobial action comes from small amounts of hydrogen peroxide released by an enzyme in the honey (Burlando and Cornara, 2013).
How to wash with honey: spread a teaspoon of raw honey over dry or slightly damp skin, massage gently for about a minute, then rinse well with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Be clear about the evidence. Honey is well studied as an ingredient, and cosmetic products usually contain between 1% and 10% of it (Burlando and Cornara, 2013), but we found no trials of plain honey used as a daily face wash. Honey may not fully remove a water-resistant sunscreen, so on beach or sport days a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser can do a better job. Skip honey altogether if you are allergic to bee products or pollen.
Step 2: moisturise with a tallow balm
Tallow is rendered beef fat. It is rich in triglycerides of oleic, palmitic, stearic and linoleic acids and contains fat-soluble vitamins (Russell et al., 2024). Because a balm contains no water, it doesn’t need the emulsifiers that hold a cream together, and its short ingredient list is easy to check.
The research is thinner than tallow’s popularity suggests. A 2024 scoping review screened 147 studies and found 19 that fitted its questions. They were comparative, laboratory and animal studies, and the authors concluded that more research on tallow as a cosmetic in humans is needed, particularly on side effects (Russell et al., 2024). Tallow’s fats overlap with some of the fats found in skin, but the barrier itself is mostly ceramides and cholesterol, which tallow does not supply in the same form. Think of tallow as a rich, simple moisturiser rather than something proven to rebuild the skin barrier.
What is in our tallow balm
Eternal Elixir Grass-Fed Tallow Balm has five ingredients: grass-fed beef tallow, organic raw beeswax, organic virgin coconut oil, organic raw honey and tocopherol (vitamin E). So the tallow and honey in this article’s title are both in the jar, with beeswax for body and vitamin E as an antioxidant. There is no added fragrance. It costs $29.99, and orders ship from Sydney within 24 hours.
How to use it: warm a small amount between your fingertips and press it into clean, slightly damp skin. A little goes a long way on the face. Use it on hands, lips, elbows and heels too, which is where one jar can stand in for several separate products.
Who it suits: people with dry or normal skin who want one simple balm for face and body. Who it doesn’t suit: vegans and vegetarians (tallow is beef fat and beeswax comes from bees), anyone allergic to bee products or coconut, and people with very oily or breakout-prone skin, who may find a rich balm with coconut oil too heavy. Patch test on your jaw or inner arm for a few days before you use it on your whole face.

Step 3: sunscreen, the product you keep
Tallow and honey do not protect against UV. Our tallow balm is not a sunscreen, and the vitamins in tallow don’t change that. The strongest evidence for any single anti-ageing step comes from sunscreen. In a Queensland trial, 903 adults under 55 were assigned to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day or only when they chose to. After four and a half years, the daily group showed no detectable increase in skin ageing, and their skin aged 24% less than the discretionary group’s (Hughes et al., 2013).
So a routine built on tallow and honey honestly has three products: honey, balm and sunscreen. Apply the balm first, give it a few minutes to sink in, then apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF generously on top. Reapply it when you spend long periods outdoors.
The minimalist skincare routine, morning and evening
| Step | Morning | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Wash | Lukewarm water, or a gentle cleanser if your skin is oily or you have exercised | Raw honey or a gentle cleanser, rinsed off with lukewarm water |
| Moisturise | A thin layer of tallow balm on slightly damp skin | Tallow balm on face, hands and lips |
| Protect | Broad-spectrum, high-SPF sunscreen, applied last | Not needed |
That is the whole routine: about two minutes morning and night, and three products in the cabinet instead of ten.
What about the 4-2-4 rule?
The 4-2-4 rule is a face-washing method from Korean skincare. You massage an oil cleanser into your skin for four minutes, massage a cream or water-based cleanser over it for two minutes, then rinse for four minutes, first with warm water and then with cold, as LOOKFANTASTIC describes it. It is a thorough double wash, and it takes ten minutes. We found no study showing that the timing itself matters. For a minimalist routine, a one-minute wash with honey or a gentle cleanser is enough on most days, and the double wash can be kept for heavy sunscreen or make-up days.
Switching over: what to expect
Change one thing at a time so you can tell what is working. Start with the moisturiser, give it a couple of weeks, then change the cleanser. Some people find their skin feels different for a while without the smooth finish of silicone-based creams, and it can take time to learn how much balm your face needs.
If you get redness, itching, bumps or breakouts that don’t settle, stop the new product. Skin that gets worse is not a “purge” to push through, whatever social media says.
When to add something back
A minimalist routine is a starting point, not a rule against every other product. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, follow the plan from your GP or dermatologist, and ask them before you swap a prescribed cream for a balm. If you have one specific goal, add one targeted product and keep the rest of the routine the same, so you can judge what it adds.
Our non-toxic beauty routine with tallow and honey goes further into ingredient choices, and our article on tallow and seed-oil moisturisers compares the two kinds of fat.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best minimalist skincare routine?
Wash gently, moisturise, and use sunscreen every morning. For a tallow-and-honey version, wash with raw honey or a gentle cleanser in the evening, moisturise morning and night with a tallow balm such as Eternal Elixir Grass-Fed Tallow Balm, and finish each morning with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

What is the 4-2-4 rule in skincare?
It is a Korean double-wash method: four minutes massaging an oil cleanser, two minutes with a cream or water-based cleanser, then four minutes rinsing with warm and then cold water. No study shows the timing matters, and a shorter gentle wash is enough for most minimalist routines.
How do I use minimalist products step by step?
Wash, moisturise, then protect. Apply products from the lightest to the richest, so a balm goes on after anything water-based, and in the morning sunscreen always goes on last.
Can tallow balm replace sunscreen?
No. Tallow balm does not protect against UV. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen over it every morning.
Will tallow clog my pores?
There is little human research on tallow and pores. Many balms, including ours, also contain coconut oil, which some people with oily or breakout-prone skin find too heavy. Patch test for a few days, start with a thin layer, and stop if you notice new bumps.
Can I use honey on my face every day?
Many people do, but we found no trials of washing the face with honey every day. Use raw honey, rinse it off well, and skip it if you are allergic to bee products or pollen.
Is tallow balm good for sensitive skin?
A short, fragrance-free ingredient list is a good start for sensitive skin, but any ingredient can cause a reaction, including beeswax, honey and coconut oil. Patch test first, and ask your GP or dermatologist if your skin reacts easily.
The verdict
You can replace most of a crowded bathroom cabinet with two simple products: raw honey, or a gentle cleanser, for the evening wash, and a tallow balm for face, hands, lips and body. Keep a broad-spectrum sunscreen for the mornings. If you want the tallow and the honey in one jar, Eternal Elixir Grass-Fed Tallow Balm combines them with beeswax, coconut oil and vitamin E for $29.99.
