Is NMN Powder Better Than Capsules? Guide to Choosing the Right Form

Is NMN Powder Better Than Capsules? Guide to Choosing the Right Form – Eternal Elixir NMN 500mg bottle

Last updated: November 1, 2026 · Originally published: December 5, 2025 · By Eternal Elixir Editorial

Quick answer: Neither form has been shown to work better. Human trials have given NMN as capsules, as tablets and as powder dissolved in water, and blood NAD+ rose in the capsule and tablet trials that measured it. No study has compared powder with capsules head to head, so the choice comes down to cost, dose accuracy and storage. Powder is also not automatically cheaper in Australia. When we checked in September 2026, the single tubs of plain NMN powder we could price cost $0.70 to $0.83 per 500mg of NMN, against $0.67 for our capsules. Our pick for most people is Eternal Elixir NMN 500mg: one 500mg capsule a day, 90 capsules to a bottle, dispatched in 1 business day.

Eternal Elixir makes NMN 500mg, and it is our pick here, so weigh our view with that in mind. We sell NMN as capsules only, not as a powder. Every competitor price and label detail below was read from that product’s own page in September 2026 and is linked, and the studies are listed in full at the end. We have not lab-tested any of these products.

Does NMN work in capsule form? What the human trials used

NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a building block the body uses to make NAD+, a coenzyme involved in energy metabolism. The real question behind “powder or capsules” is whether the form changes how much NMN does its job once swallowed. The trials help here, because researchers have used every common oral format:

  • Capsules, 80 healthy middle-aged adults, 60 days. Participants took two, four or six 150mg capsules once a day (300mg, 600mg or 900mg of NMN) or a placebo. Blood NAD rose in every NMN group at day 30 and day 60 compared with placebo and with baseline (p ≤ 0.001), and it was highest in the 600mg and 900mg groups (Yi et al., GeroScience, 2023).
  • Capsules, 11 healthy middle-aged Japanese men, 8 weeks. Two 125mg capsules once a day before breakfast, 250mg in total. NAD+ in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, a type of white blood cell, rose over the eight weeks. This was a small open-label study with no placebo group (Yamaguchi et al., Endocrine Journal, 2024).
  • Tablets, 30 healthy adults, 12 weeks. 125mg tablets twice a day (250mg a day) or placebo, 15 people in each group. Whole-blood NAD+ rose significantly with NMN, and no obvious adverse effects were seen. Four of the authors worked for the company that supplied the NMN (Okabe et al., Frontiers in Nutrition, 2022).
  • Tablets, 108 older Japanese adults, 12 weeks. 250mg of NMN as six tablets once a day, taken in the morning or the afternoon, or placebo. Every group, placebo included, got faster at a five-times sit-to-stand test. The afternoon NMN group showed the largest effect on sit-to-stand speed and on drowsiness (Kim et al., Nutrients, 2022).
  • Powder, 48 recreational runners, 6 weeks. Sachets of NMN powder twice a day, giving 300mg, 600mg or 1,200mg a day, or a placebo powder, alongside training. Oxygen uptake and power at the first and second ventilatory thresholds rose more in the 600mg and 1,200mg groups than with placebo. VO2max itself did not change in any group (Liao et al., Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2021).
  • Powder, 31 healthy adults aged 20 to 65, up to 4 weeks. 1,250mg a day as a packaged powder dissolved completely in 200 ml of water. Nothing changed beyond normal physiological variation, and there were no severe adverse events (Fukamizu et al., Scientific Reports, 2022).

Two things follow. NMN raises blood NAD+ when it is swallowed as a capsule or a tablet, because those are the trials that measured it. And powder is not untested: it has been given at higher doses. The two powder trials, though, studied exercise capacity and safety and did not report blood NAD+. An earlier version of this page said every human NMN trial had used capsules or sublingual delivery. That was wrong, and we have corrected it.

How our serve compares with the trials: one Eternal Elixir capsule gives 500mg of NMN. That is double the 250mg a day used in the Okabe, Kim and Yamaguchi studies. It sits between the 300mg and 600mg arms of the Yi trial, and below the 600mg and 900mg arms where blood NAD was highest. It is well under the 1,250mg a day that Fukamizu tested for safety over four weeks. Most of these trials ran for 60 days to 12 weeks, so there is little human data on years of daily use. For a closer look at amounts, see our guide to whether one 500mg NMN capsule is enough.

Is NMN powder absorbed faster than capsules?

Nobody has tested it. We searched PubMed in September 2026 and found no human trial that gave the same dose of NMN as a powder and as a capsule and compared blood levels. Claims that one form “absorbs faster” are extrapolation.

The closest evidence is a 2026 crossover trial in 14 healthy men. Each took one 250mg NMN tablet two ways, eight days apart: swallowed with water, or held under the tongue for three minutes. Over the following hour, blood NMN, nicotinamide and NAD+ did not differ between the two routes. Two breakdown products, 2PY and 4PY, rose faster after the under-the-tongue dose, and the authors could not say where that rise came from. All three authors work for the company that ran the study (Wakabayashi et al., Scientific Reports, 2026).

Some brands sell enteric-coated capsules, made to pass through the stomach before they open. Simply Nootropics, for example, says its enteric coating improves NMN bioavailability by 30% compared with regular capsules. We found no published human trial of an enteric-coated NMN capsule, so treat that figure as the brand’s own claim.

What a capsule shell does do is keep the powder sealed until you swallow it. Ours is a standard cellulose capsule, not a delayed-release one, and the product page lists the full contents as NMN, rice flour and the cellulose shell.

NMN powder vs capsules in Australia: cost per 500mg

AI search summaries say powder costs less per gram. Sometimes it does. We priced plain NMN in both forms from Australian pharmacies and from online sellers that deliver here, then converted every product to the cost of 500mg of NMN using its own label. Prices are as of Sep 2026.

Three things stand out. The single tubs of plain NMN powder we could price cost $0.70 to $0.83 per 500mg, which is more than our 90-capsule bottle at $0.67. Only DoNotAge’s 1 kg bag beat that, at $0.56, and it costs $1,124 up front and ships from overseas. At 500mg a day, 1 kg is 2,000 days of NMN. Multi-bottle pricing changes the picture again: five bottles of ours cost $239.96 with the 20% saving, which is $0.53 per 500mg and less than any powder in the table.

Blends are a different product. AgeMate’s Daily Longevity Blend gives 500mg of NMN per scoop, but the scoop also carries glycine, magnesium, MSM, vitamin C, L-theanine and more, so you pay $2.63 to $3.30 a serve. If the NMN is what you are after, plain NMN costs far less.

Bulk Nutrients deserves a fair note. At $79.00 for 120 capsules it is a cent cheaper than ours per 500mg on a single bottle, though it adds a flat $9 shipping charge, while we ship free on orders over $100. Our Bulk Nutrients review, DoNotAge review and Simply Nootropics review look at each brand in more depth, and our guide to NMN at Chemist Warehouse covers the pharmacy range.

NMN powder: pros and cons

Advantages of powder

  • Dose flexibility. With a small scale you can take any amount you like, or split a dose between morning and afternoon.
  • The lowest price at bulk sizes. The 1 kg bag in our table works out at $0.56 per 500mg, if you are happy to buy that much at once.
  • No capsules to swallow. It dissolves in water or juice, which helps if you find capsules hard to take.
  • Easy to combine. Some people add NMN to a daily drink with other powders. Simply Nootropics suggests mixing it with TMG powder.

Disadvantages of powder

  • Storage takes care. Each time you open the tub, the powder meets air and kitchen humidity. Microgenics tells you to store its powder below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from heat and sunlight, and Simply Nootropics says to keep its NMN in the fridge once opened with the seal tightly closed. We found no published study of how quickly NMN powder degrades at home, so any percentage loss you see quoted is a guess.
  • Dose accuracy depends on you. A level scoop depends on how you level it and whether the powder has clumped. Weighing each dose fixes that, but it adds a step every morning.
  • Taste. Plain NMN is slightly acidic. Simply Nootropics compares the flavour to vitamin C.
  • Travel. You need the tub or a sealed container, a scoop and something to mix it in.

NMN capsules: pros and cons

Advantages of capsules

  • The same dose every time. Each capsule holds the amount on the label, which is 500mg in ours.
  • Sealed until you take it. The powder stays inside the shell, and the bottle is open for a few seconds a day.
  • Nothing to taste, weigh or mix. One capsule with water and you are done.
  • Travel. A week of capsules fits in a pill box or a coat pocket.
  • Matched to the NAD+ trials. The studies that measured higher blood NAD+ used capsules or tablets.

Disadvantages of capsules

  • Dose steps. With a 500mg capsule you can take 500mg or 1,000mg, but nothing in between.
  • Prices vary widely. The capsules in our table ran from $0.66 to $2.30 per 500mg, so the brand matters more than the format.
  • Capsule strength varies. Some brands use 250mg capsules, so check whether “one serve” means one capsule or two.

How to store NMN powder and capsules

The labels agree on the basics. Bulk Nutrients says to keep its capsules well sealed and away from moisture, light and heat, and the powder labels above say much the same, with one adding the fridge once opened. In practice:

  • Keep either form in a cupboard away from the kettle, the stove and a sunny windowsill.
  • Close the lid straight after each dose. For powder, use a dry scoop and never add water to the tub.
  • If you refrigerate powder, let a cold tub sit closed for a few minutes before opening, so that moisture from the air doesn’t condense on the powder.
  • Follow the storage line on your own label, and check the best-before date when the bottle arrives.

Capsules make most of this simpler, which is one reason they suit a hot Australian summer and a daily habit. Our guide to taking NMN in the morning or at night covers what the trials say about timing.

Which form is right for you?

Choose NMN powder if you:

  • want to adjust your dose by the milligram, or take something other than a multiple of 250mg or 500mg
  • already make a daily drink and would rather add NMN to it than swallow a capsule
  • are happy to buy in bulk and to store an opened tub carefully

Choose NMN capsules if you:

  • want the same 500mg every day without measuring
  • travel, or keep your supplements at work or in a bag
  • live somewhere hot and humid and don’t want a tub in the fridge
  • want the format used in the trials that measured blood NAD+

If you are weighing NMN against other NAD+ precursors rather than one form against another, our NMN vs NR comparison covers that. The same powder-or-capsule question comes up with other supplements too, and we have looked at it for spermidine and TMG.

Why Eternal Elixir NMN 500mg is a capsule

We chose capsules because they suit how most people take NMN: one dose each morning, every day, for months. Eternal Elixir NMN 500mg holds 500mg of nicotinamide mononucleotide in each cellulose capsule, with rice flour as the only other ingredient. The label says one capsule a day, preferably in the morning, and each bottle holds 90.

  • A full 500mg in one capsule. Some capsules on the market hold 250mg, so you need two of those for the same amount.
  • Three months per bottle. That is 90 capsules, against 30 in each pharmacy pack we checked.
  • $0.67 per 500mg on a single bottle. Two bottles save 10% ($107.98, which also ships free), three save 15% and five save 20%, which brings it to $0.53 per 500mg.
  • Dispatched in 1 business day, with a 30-day money-back guarantee and Afterpay available.
  • Batch certificates on request. Our product page says every batch is third-party lab tested for purity and potency, and we will send the current certificate of analysis if you ask.

Who it suits: adults who want 500mg of NMN a day without measuring anything, in the capsule format used in the NAD+ trials, at one of the lowest costs per serve we found.

Who it doesn’t suit: anyone who wants doses below 500mg, anyone who would rather drink NMN than swallow it, and anyone after the lowest single-bottle price, where Bulk Nutrients is a cent cheaper. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or take prescription medicines, talk to your doctor before taking NMN.

Many people take NMN alongside trans-resveratrol. Our Trans-Resveratrol 1200mg gives 1,200mg per two-capsule serve, and the card below adds both to your cart together.

If you would rather have NMN and resveratrol in a single product, we also stock Vitasolutions NMN & Resveratrol. Our NMN and resveratrol combinations compared sets the options side by side, and our guide to why some people take NMN with TMG explains that pairing.

AgeMate in Australia: powder or capsules?

AgeMate is one of the best-known NMN names in Australia, and it now sells NMN as a powder. In September 2026 its range was the Daily Longevity Blend plus welcome kits, and we found no plain NMN capsule on its site. Each 3.325 g level scoop holds 500mg of CellVive NMN with 14 other active ingredients, mixed into 240 ml of cold water. A 30-serve container costs $99 bought once or $79 on a monthly subscription ($2.63 a serve), and the label says to use it daily for up to 12 weeks.

If you like AgeMate’s drink, that is a fair reason to choose it. If you mainly want the NMN, a 500mg capsule gives the same amount of NMN for about a quarter of the price per serve: $0.67 for ours against $2.63 on AgeMate’s subscription. Our AgeMate alternatives comparison sets out the other options, and our best NMN supplements in Australia, compared on cost per serve covers the wider market.

NMN powder vs capsules: frequently asked questions

Is NMN powder or capsules better?

Neither has been shown to work better, because no trial has compared them directly. Capsules give the same dose every day with nothing to measure or refrigerate, and they are the format used in the trials that measured higher blood NAD+. Powder lets you set any dose and can cost less at bulk sizes. For most people we recommend capsules, and our pick is Eternal Elixir NMN 500mg at $0.67 per 500mg.

Both in one capsule: Vitasolutions NMN and Resveratrol · $49.99

What is the best form of NMN to take?

A swallowed capsule or tablet has the strongest human evidence, because those were the forms used in the trials that measured and found higher blood NAD+. Powder has been used in an exercise trial and a safety trial. The one trial that compared routes, a tablet swallowed or held under the tongue, found no difference in blood NAD+ over an hour. Our pick is Eternal Elixir NMN 500mg capsules.

Is NMN in capsule form effective? Does NMN work in pill form?

Yes, for the outcome most often measured. In a 60-day trial of 80 middle-aged adults, NMN capsules at 300mg to 900mg a day raised blood NAD compared with placebo, and 125mg tablets twice a day raised whole-blood NAD+ over 12 weeks in 30 healthy adults. Evidence for effects beyond NAD+ levels is still modest.

Which NMN powder do we recommend?

Our pick is not a powder: Eternal Elixir NMN 500mg capsules cost $0.67 per 500mg, less than either single-tub powder we priced. If you want powder, the lowest price per 500mg we found at a pharmacy was Microgenics NMN Powder at $0.83, with a 12-week label limit. Online, DoNotAge’s 100 g tub works out at $0.70 per 500mg and ships from overseas.

TMG 2000mg in capsules, no scooping · $44.99

Is NMN powder absorbed faster than capsules?

There is no evidence either way. No published human trial has compared the same dose of NMN as powder and as a capsule. Powder dissolves before you drink it, while a standard capsule opens in the stomach first, but no study has shown that this changes blood NAD+.

How should NMN powder be stored?

Sealed, cool, dry and out of sunlight, and exactly as your label says. Microgenics says below 25°C in a cool, dry place, and Simply Nootropics says in the fridge once opened, with the seal tightly closed. Use a dry scoop, close the lid straight away, and let a cold tub come up to room temperature before you open it.

Is sublingual NMN or an enteric-coated capsule better?

Not on current evidence. In a 2026 crossover trial of 14 healthy men, a 250mg tablet held under the tongue gave the same blood NMN and NAD+ over an hour as the same tablet swallowed. We found no published human trial of enteric-coated NMN capsules.

Can I switch between powder and capsules?

Yes. The molecule is the same, so match the daily amount. Two 500mg capsules equal 1,000mg of NMN, which is two level scoops of a 500mg-per-scoop powder.

Is NMN safe to take every day?

In the trials above that reported safety, NMN was well tolerated at 250mg to 1,250mg a day for four weeks to 12 weeks, with no severe adverse events. There is little human data on daily use over years, and several pharmacy labels limit use to 12 weeks, so follow the directions on the product you buy. Talk to your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or take prescription medicines. Our article on long-term NMN safety research goes further.

The verdict: NMN powder or capsules?

Our pick: Eternal Elixir NMN 500mg capsules. You get 500mg of NMN in one capsule for $0.67 a day, or $0.53 when you buy five bottles, in the format used in the trials that measured higher blood NAD+, with nothing to weigh or refrigerate.

If you want powder: Microgenics NMN Powder at Chemist Warehouse was the lowest-cost pharmacy option per 500mg we found, at $0.83. DoNotAge’s powder costs less per 500mg if you order from overseas.

Whichever form you choose, compare the cost per 500mg rather than the pack price, and store it as the label says.
