Healthy Ageing: An Australian Longevity Guide (2026)

Healthy ageing: an older couple walking hand in hand along the beach at the water's edge

Last updated: October 22, 2026 · By Eternal Elixir Editorial

Healthy ageing means keeping the ability to do the things you value as the years add up: walking to the shops, lifting your grandkids, sleeping well and staying sharp enough to enjoy a good conversation. It rests mostly on daily habits, with regular check-ups and, for some people, a supplement step on top. This guide explains what healthy ageing means, which habits have the strongest evidence, a simple plan for each decade, and where Eternal Elixir supplements fit once the basics are in place.

If you already know you want to compare products, our ranked guide to anti-ageing supplements in Australia sets the main options side by side. Most readers will get more from the habits first, so start there.

Key takeaways

  • Healthy ageing is about keeping your functional ability as you get older. Living with a health condition does not rule it out.
  • Daily movement, strength work twice a week, good sleep, a varied plant-rich diet and staying connected carry the most evidence.
  • In a large pooled analysis, adults aged 60 and over saw the benefit of extra daily steps level off at around 6,000 to 8,000 steps.
  • Supplements such as spermidine and resveratrol are an optional extra after the habits and a GP check, never a replacement for them.

What Is Healthy Ageing?

The World Health Organization describes healthy ageing as creating the environments and opportunities that let people be and do what they value throughout their lives. Its explainer makes a point many people find reassuring: being free of disease or infirmity is not a requirement, because plenty of older adults live with a well-managed condition that has little effect on their wellbeing (WHO, Healthy ageing and functional ability).

That shifts the goal. Instead of chasing a younger face or a perfect blood test, healthy ageing asks practical questions. Can you get up off the floor without help? Can you carry the shopping up a flight of stairs? Do you sleep through most nights and wake with enough energy for the day? Are there people you see and talk to each week? Each of those is a skill you can protect with regular practice, and most of them respond to change at any age.

It also explains why the topic overlaps with longevity. A longer life is only part of the aim. The bigger prize is more of those years spent independent and active. Our longevity supplement evidence index tracks which ingredients have human data behind them, but the habits below come first for a reason: they have far more evidence than any capsule.

Healthy Ageing Habits With the Strongest Evidence

None of these habits needs special equipment or a big budget. They work best stacked together and kept up for years, so pick the one you are weakest on and start there.

Walk more, at a pace that suits you

Walking is the simplest place to start. A meta-analysis in The Lancet Public Health pooled data from 15 international cohorts covering 47,471 adults. Taking more steps each day was linked to a lower risk of death from any cause, and the curve flattened at different points by age: around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults aged 60 and over, and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults (Paluch et al., The Lancet Public Health, 2022). This was an observational study, so it shows a link rather than proof, but it gives a realistic target. If you are on 3,000 steps today, aim for 4,000 next month rather than jumping to 10,000.

Keep your muscles working

Muscle and strength fade faster than most people expect from middle age onwards, and they decide how easily you get out of a chair, climb stairs or recover from a fall. Australia’s 24-hour movement guidelines suggest that adults and older Australians do muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week, plus balance and mobility work on three or more days (24-hour movement guidelines). Squats to a chair, wall push-ups, carrying shopping bags and resistance bands all count. Eating enough protein across the day helps the muscle you build stay put.

Protect your sleep

Sleep often gets lighter and more broken with age, and short nights make every other habit harder. Keep a steady wake-up time, get morning daylight, and keep caffeine to the first half of the day. Our guide on how to sleep better has a full list of habits, and our piece on getting more deep sleep covers the slow-wave stage that tends to shrink first.

Eat a varied, plant-rich diet

A plate built around vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, nuts, fish and olive oil gives you fibre, protein and a wide spread of plant compounds. Some of those compounds are the same ones that show up in longevity research. Spermidine is a good example: it is found in wheat germ, legumes, mushrooms and aged cheese, and our list of foods high in spermidine shows the richest everyday sources.

Stay connected and keep a purpose

Regular contact with friends, family or a community group matters more than it sounds. A weekly walk with a friend combines two habits in one. Volunteering, part-time work, a club or a course give the week a shape and a reason to get out the door.

Book regular check-ups

Your GP can check the things you cannot feel, such as heart and metabolic markers, and recommend the screening tests that suit your age. Bring a list of everything you take, including supplements. If something new appears, such as unexplained tiredness, a change in balance or a mood that will not lift, raise it early.

A Healthy Ageing Plan by Decade

The habits stay the same through life, but the emphasis shifts. The table below turns them into a simple weekly plan for each decade from 40 onwards. The movement targets come from Australia’s 24-hour movement guidelines and the step ranges from the meta-analysis above. Use the check-up column as a prompt for a conversation with your GP rather than a fixed schedule.

40sBuild the base while it is easy30 minutes of moderate activity on most days; strength work on 2 daysBook a general health check and set a baseline for weight, waist and fitness
50sHold on to muscle and sleepStrength work on 2 or more days; 8,000 or more steps on most days if you canReview sleep, alcohol and medicines with your GP

Women and men face some different changes along the way, so the need-based guides help with the detail. Our roundups of supplements for women over 50 and supplements for men over 50 show how the priorities differ.

Where Supplements Fit in Healthy Ageing

Supplements are the last layer, not the first. If your sleep, movement and diet are in poor shape, a capsule will not make up the difference. Once those are steady, two Eternal Elixir products are the ones most often asked about for healthy ageing: spermidine and trans-resveratrol. Here is what the human research says, including the results that did not go our way.

Spermidine

Spermidine is a polyamine your cells use in their recycling process, known as autophagy. The strongest human data comes from diet. In a prospective study of 829 adults aged 45 to 84 followed for 20 years, people in the top third of dietary spermidine intake had lower death rates than those in the bottom third. The researchers calculated that the difference was similar to being 5.7 years younger (Kiechl et al., The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2018). That is an association from food intake, and it cannot show that a supplement does the same.

The supplement trials are more mixed. In the 12-month SmartAge trial, 100 adults aged 60 to 90 with self-reported memory concerns took 0.9 mg a day of spermidine from wheat germ extract or a placebo. Memory performance did not change compared with placebo, though exploratory results on verbal memory were described as possibly beneficial and worth testing at higher doses (Schwarz et al., JAMA Network Open, 2022). Our page on spermidine benefits covers the wider research, and the spermidine dosage guide explains timing.

Eternal Elixir’s Spermidine 10mg provides 10 mg per capsule, 90 capsules per bottle, with a label serve of one capsule a day with a meal. At $49.99 that is about $0.56 a day. That is more than ten times the dose used in SmartAge, which is higher, not proven better.

Trans-resveratrol

Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in grape skins and Japanese knotweed. One of the longer human trials comes from the University of Newcastle in New South Wales. In 129 postmenopausal women aged 45 to 85, taking 75 mg of trans-resveratrol twice a day for 12 months improved overall cognitive performance compared with placebo and lessened the decline in blood flow responses in the brain (Thaung Zaw et al., Nutrients, 2020). The study was limited to women, so the results may not carry over to men.

Eternal Elixir’s Trans-Resveratrol 1200mg gives 600 mg per capsule, with a label serve of two capsules (1,200 mg) a day. Each bottle holds 90 capsules, or 45 serves, for $59.99, about $1.33 a serve. That serve is eight times the daily amount in the Newcastle trial, and the trial did not test the higher dose. Our resveratrol dosage guide covers how people adjust their intake.

Healthy Ageing FAQ: Questions Australians Ask

What are some effective ways to cope with ageing?

Focus on what you can still build: strength, fitness, skills and friendships all respond to practice at any age. Keep a routine that includes movement, time outdoors and regular contact with people you like. If low mood lasts more than a couple of weeks, talk to your GP.

How can a man accept ageing?

Many men find it easier when the focus moves from how they look to what they can do. Set a practical goal, such as a strength target or a long walk each weekend, and get a health check so you know where you stand. Talking it through with mates or a GP helps more than most expect.

What is the fear of growing old called?

A strong, persistent fear of ageing is called gerascophobia. Some worry about getting older is normal. If the fear is affecting your sleep, work or relationships, a GP or psychologist can help you work through it.

What is the difference between healthy ageing and anti-ageing?

Anti-ageing usually refers to slowing visible signs, such as skin changes. Healthy ageing is broader: it is about keeping the ability to live the way you want as you get older. Our guide to anti-ageing supplements in Australia covers the product side.

At what age should you start thinking about healthy ageing?

The earlier the better, but it is never too late. Muscle, balance and fitness respond to training even in your 70s and 80s. Your 40s are a good time to set a baseline. If stress is getting in the way of your habits, our guide on how to lower cortisol naturally is a useful next read.
