Why fadogia agrestis became popular

Most Australians searching for fadogia agrestis heard about it from podcasts and online protocols that pair it with tongkat ali. The best known is neuroscientist Andrew Huberman’s January 2023 supplementation episode, where he said that at 600 milligrams a day “many people, not all, report” higher libido and testosterone. Those are reports, not trial results. In the same episode he warned that there is literature showing fadogia “can be toxic to testicular cells” at very high doses, advised staying within label doses, and described people cycling it, for example eight weeks on and two weeks off.

That caution matches the rat studies. The 600mg figure has become the default on Australian labels, but nobody has tested whether 600mg is effective or safe in people, and no cycling schedule has been studied either. When you read a fadogia label or a forum post, treat the dose as a convention, not a finding.

Why it is our pick: unlike fadogia, tongkat ali has been tested in men. A 2022 meta-analysis of randomised trials found that tongkat ali raised total testosterone, particularly in men who started low (Leisegang 2022). In one of those trials, 105 men aged 50 to 70 with low testosterone took 100mg or 200mg a day of a standardised water extract or a placebo for 12 weeks, and total testosterone rose in the 200mg group compared with placebo (Chinnappan 2021). That trial was funded by the extract’s maker and used a different extract from ours, so its results can’t simply be carried over to our capsules.

• Suits: people who want a single fadogia capsule a day at the 600mg amount often quoted online.

The product page says it is not suitable for anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, and asks people with a health condition or on prescription medicines to check with a health practitioner first.

• Suits: people who want a plain 500mg, one-a-day capsule with safety guidance on the page.
• Doesn’t suit: vegetarians, because the capsule is gelatin.

5. Nature’s Body Fadogia Agrestis: flexible one or two capsules

Nature’s Body sells 60 vegan capsules of 500mg 10:1 fadogia extract in an amber glass bottle. The label says one to two capsules a day, and the brand says it is made in Australia and ships free from Sydney.

• Suits: people who want a vegan capsule and the option of a lower 500mg day.

Anabolix Nutrition, sold through Nutrition Warehouse, lists 500mg of 10:1 fadogia per capsule and directions of one to two capsules a day, with no more than two in 24 hours. The listing also says “60 Capsules | 30 Serves”, which doesn’t match a one-capsule serve.

• Suits: Nutrition Warehouse shoppers who want a vegan capsule.
• Doesn’t suit: anyone who wants a label that agrees with itself on the serve.

8. Nature’s Basket Fadogia Agrestis Extract: lowest shelf price, no dose stated

Nature’s Basket sells 60 vegetable capsules for $30.99, the lowest price in the table. The listing doesn’t state how much fadogia each capsule holds or how many to take, only “take as directed”.

• Suits: nobody who wants to know their dose. Given the quality findings above, a stated amount matters for this herb.
• Doesn’t suit: anyone comparing cost per milligram, because it can’t be worked out.

What does fadogia agrestis do? The evidence

Fadogia agrestis is a shrub from West Africa. Its reputation as a testosterone booster comes from three rat studies by one Nigerian research group:

• Five days (Yakubu 2005). Male rats given a water extract of the stem at 18, 50 or 100mg per kg of body weight showed more sexual behaviour and higher blood testosterone.
• 28 days, testes (Yakubu 2008). At all three doses, markers of testicular function changed in ways the authors described as adverse. The rats partly recovered after 10 days off, mainly at the lowest dose.
• 28 days, liver and kidney (Yakubu 2009). The extract shifted enzymes out of liver and kidney tissue into the blood and raised a blood marker of oxidative damage, which the authors read as damage to cell membranes.

Nobody has tested fadogia in people, so there is no human evidence that it raises testosterone, and no human safety data at any dose. How Australian label doses compare with the rat doses

Rat doses can’t be copied straight across to people, because small animals burn through compounds faster. The usual way to convert them is to divide the rat dose in mg per kg by 6.2 to get a human equivalent dose in mg per kg (Nair 2016). For an 80kg adult, the three rat doses in the fadogia studies work out like this:

The common 500 to 600mg label dose sits between the human equivalents of the lowest and middle rat doses, and AlphaMens Lab’s 1,000mg label serve sits between the middle and highest. Two cautions apply. First, the rats were given a simple water extract of the stem, and a 10:1 capsule extract is a different preparation, so milligrams don’t translate one to one. Second, dose-conversion guides start a first human dose from the highest animal dose that caused no adverse effects, then divide by 10 for safety (Nair 2016). In the 28-day fadogia studies every dose changed testicular markers, so those studies don’t give a dose without effects to start from. That is the clearest reason to keep fadogia short and at the lowest label serve, if you take it at all.

Tongkat ali and fadogia agrestis: which is better?

On the evidence, tongkat ali. It has randomised, placebo-controlled trials in men and a 2022 meta-analysis showing a rise in total testosterone, while fadogia has rat studies only. The case for fadogia is the rat testosterone result and its popularity in online protocols that pair it with tongkat ali. The case against is that no one has tested it in people, and the longer rat studies found changes in the testes, liver and kidneys.

The tongkat ali evidence in more detail: the 2022 meta-analysis included nine studies in its review and pooled five randomised trials, and found a significant rise in total testosterone, strongest in men who started with low levels (Leisegang 2022). In a separate four-week trial, 63 moderately stressed adults (32 men and 31 women) took 200mg a day of a standardised tongkat ali root water extract or a placebo; the tongkat group had 16% lower salivary cortisol and 37% higher salivary testosterone than placebo (Talbott 2013). Both the 2021 and 2013 trials used the same branded extract and involved its maker, and neither tested fadogia.

Fadogia agrestis side effects and who should avoid it

• Unknown risk in people. With no human trials, nobody knows what side effects fadogia causes in people or at what dose. The rat findings on the testes, liver and kidneys are the only safety data there is.
• Not for under 18s, or in pregnancy or breastfeeding, as the Emrald Labs and AlphaMens Lab pages also say.
• Talk to your GP first if you take any prescription medicine, have a liver or kidney condition, or are trying for a baby, given the rat findings on testicular function.
• Stop if something changes. Stop taking fadogia and see your GP if you notice testicular pain or swelling, a drop in libido, changes in mood, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine. Given the rat findings, these are signs to take seriously rather than wait out.
• Tongkat ali and medicines. In 14 healthy young men, a single 200mg dose of a tongkat ali water extract cut the absorption of the blood pressure medicine propranolol by 29% (Salman 2010). If you take blood pressure or heart medicines, talk to your GP before taking tongkat ali.

How to choose a fadogia agrestis supplement

• A stated amount per capsule. Given that some products tested had no detectable fadogia compounds, a label that states milligrams and extract ratio is the minimum.
• What the extract ratio means. A 10:1 extract means about ten kilograms of raw plant were concentrated into one kilogram of extract, as the Nature’s Body page explains. A ratio says how concentrated the extract is, not how much of any active compound it holds, and no fadogia label we checked stated a standardised marker compound.
• Directions that add up. The serve, the capsule count and the number of serves should agree.
• The lowest dose that fits the label. With no human data, more is not better.
• Short use, with breaks. The rat changes appeared over 28 days of daily dosing.
• Single-ingredient products. Blends that mix fadogia with several other herbs make it hard to know how much of each you take, and harder to work out which one caused a side effect.
