Quick answer: No. When we searched the Chemist Warehouse website in September 2026, “threonate” returned three hair-care products and “magtein” returned nothing. The magnesium on its shelves is glycinate, citrate, oxide and blends of those, sold for muscle function and everyday intake. Magnesium L-threonate is bought online in Australia. Our pick is Eternal Elixir Magnesium L-Threonate 2000mg: 90 capsules for $59.99, which is 30 three-capsule serves at $2.00 each, and each serve gives 2,000mg of magnesium L-threonate (about 144mg of elemental magnesium). It ships from Sydney within 24 hours.
Eternal Elixir makes Magnesium L-Threonate 2000mg, and it is our pick. We read every other product in this guide on its own product page or on the retailer page we link, in September 2026. We have not lab-tested any of them. Chemist Warehouse stock changes, so if the search results matter to you, run the search yourself before you decide.

Does Chemist Warehouse sell magnesium threonate?
Not on its website when we checked. We ran three searches on chemistwarehouse.com.au in September 2026:
- “threonate”: three results, all Kristin Ess curl hair-care products. No supplement.
- “magtein” (the best-known branded form of magnesium L-threonate): no results.
- “magnesium glycinate”: 126 results, from Nature’s Own, Swisse, Nutra-Life, Blackmores, Ethical Nutrients, Healthy Care and others.
What Chemist Warehouse does sell is glycinate and similar forms. Those products are labelled for muscle cramps, muscle function and topping up dietary intake. That is a different job from the one magnesium L-threonate was developed for, which the next sections explain.
For the compound itself, what it is and how it is dosed, see our Australian guide to magnesium L-threonate. If all you want is more magnesium, our ranking of the best magnesium supplements in Australia compares the everyday forms on cost and absorption.
What Chemist Warehouse sells instead
Here are four of the glycinate products Chemist Warehouse sells, with the elemental magnesium printed on each listing. Prices are in Australian dollars as of Sep 2026. The last column puts each product on the same footing: what 100mg of elemental magnesium costs at its label dose.
| Product | Elemental magnesium per unit | Label daily dose | Pack | Price (AUD, as of Sep 2026) | Cost per day | Cost per 100mg elemental magnesium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nature’s Own Magnesium Glycinate 1150mg | 150mg per tablet | 1 tablet twice a day (300mg) | 300 tablets | $29.99 | $0.20 | $0.07 |
| Ethical Nutrients Mega Magnesium Glycinate 5-in-1 | 200mg per tablet, plus zinc, vitamin B6, chromium and selenium | 1 tablet a day for daily supplementation | 240 tablets | $42.47 | $0.18 | $0.09 |
| Swisse Ultiboost Magnesium Glycinate | 150mg per tablet | 1 tablet a day for general health | 120 tablets | $24.99 | $0.21 | $0.14 |
| Nutra-Life Magnesium Glycinate | 105mg per capsule (936mg of magnesium glycinate) | 1 to 3 capsules a day | 60 capsules | $16.49 | $0.27 at 1 capsule | $0.26 |

Any of these is a sensible buy if your aim is to reach your daily magnesium intake. The Australian and New Zealand recommended dietary intake is 400mg to 420mg a day for men and 310mg to 320mg a day for women, and the upper level for magnesium from supplements is 350mg a day for adults, with diarrhoea the first sign of too much (Nutrient Reference Values for Australia and New Zealand). The Ethical Nutrients tablet also carries selenium and vitamin B6, so count those if you take a multivitamin as well.
Magnesium L-threonate and glycinate are built for different jobs
Magnesium L-threonate is magnesium bound to L-threonate, a breakdown product of vitamin C. By weight it is only about 7% elemental magnesium, so a 2,000mg serve supplies about 144mg of magnesium. That is less than one Nature’s Own tablet. On a cost-per-milligram test it loses badly: our serve works out to about $1.39 per 100mg of elemental magnesium, against $0.07 for the Nature’s Own tablet.
People buy it for a different reason. The form was developed to raise magnesium levels in the brain. In the 2010 study that introduced it, rats given magnesium L-threonate had higher brain magnesium and did better on learning and memory tests (Slutsky et al., Neuron, 2010). That was in rats. The human trials below measured memory tests and sleep, not magnesium inside the brain, so the brain-delivery idea is still an animal finding.
What the human trials found
| Study | Who took part | Daily dose and length | What changed | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Liu et al., 2016 | 44 adults aged 50 to 70 with self-reported memory and concentration complaints and poor sleep | 1.5g or 2g by body weight (about 25mg per kg), 12 weeks | Overall score across four thinking domains improved more than on placebo (p = 0.003) | Small, funded by Neurocentria, whose product was tested. Sleep results could not be judged because of a strong placebo effect. |
| Hausenblas et al., 2024 | 80 adults aged 35 to 55 with self-reported sleep problems | 1g for 21 days | Deep sleep and REM sleep scores on an Oura ring improved against placebo, as did reported mood, energy and alertness | Three weeks only, funded by AIDP, an ingredient company |
| Lopresti and Smith, 2025 (Perth) | 100 adults aged 18 to 45 unhappy with their sleep | 2g of Magtein for 6 weeks | Overall cognition score and reaction time improved more than on placebo (p = 0.043). Self-reported sleep-related impairment improved. | No difference in sleep measured by the ring. Funded by Threotech, which supplied the product. |
| Zhang et al., 2022 | 109 healthy adults aged 18 to 65 in China | 2g of a Magtein formula with phosphatidylserine and vitamins C and D, 30 days | All five parts of a clinical memory test improved against placebo | A combination formula, so the magnesium’s share is unclear |
The newest trial is Australian. Researchers in Perth gave 100 adults aged 18 to 45 who were unhappy with their sleep 2g of Magtein or a placebo each day for six weeks. The magnesium group improved more on an overall cognition score, with the clearest gains in working and episodic memory, and reaction time also improved. Self-reported sleep-related impairment improved, but sleep measured by a wearable ring did not differ between groups (Lopresti and Smith, Frontiers in Nutrition, 2025).
The earlier sleep trial gave 80 adults aged 35 to 55 with self-reported sleep problems 1g a day for 21 days. On an Oura ring, deep sleep and REM sleep scores improved against placebo, and participants reported better mood, energy and alertness (Hausenblas et al., Sleep Medicine: X, 2024). In the 12-week trial of 44 adults aged 50 to 70, an overall thinking score improved more than on placebo (Liu et al., 2016). A 30-day trial in 109 Chinese adults used a formula that also contained phosphatidylserine and vitamins, so it tells you about the formula rather than the magnesium alone (Zhang et al., Nutrients, 2022).
What has not been shown
- We found no human trial that compared magnesium L-threonate head to head with glycinate or any other everyday form.
- Three of the four trials were funded by companies that make or sell the ingredient, and all four were small, from 44 to 109 people.
- The sleep results are mixed. One trial found better ring-measured sleep stages, and the larger Australian trial found no difference on the ring.
- The longest trial ran 12 weeks.
So the honest summary is this. If your goal is magnesium intake, the glycinate at Chemist Warehouse does that job for a fraction of the price. If your goal is the memory, focus and sleep outcomes these trials measured, glycinate has not been tested for them in the same way, and L-threonate is the form with that research behind it. Our guides to magnesium L-threonate benefits and magnesium L-threonate for sleep go through the evidence in more detail.

Switch Nutrition’s powder is the cheapest per serve at $1.67, if you are happy to scoop it. Life Extension names Magtein on its label and costs $1.91 a serve before shipping from overseas. Apollo adds L-theanine and apigenin, which suits some buyers and not others. Ours is a single-ingredient capsule at $2.00 a serve, sent from Sydney, with free shipping on orders over $100.
Why Eternal Elixir Magnesium L-Threonate is our pick
Eternal Elixir makes this product. Here is what the label and product page give you.
- What is in it: magnesium L-threonate, rice flour and a vegetable capsule. Nothing else.
- Amount: 2,000mg of magnesium L-threonate per three-capsule serve, about 144mg of elemental magnesium, 90 capsules per bottle, 30 serves.
- Price: $59.99 a bottle, which is $2.00 a serve.
- Buying ahead: the product page takes 10% off two bottles, 15% off three and 20% off five. Two bottles come to $107.98, which clears the $100 free-shipping threshold.
- Service: a 30-day money-back guarantee, dispatch from Sydney within 24 hours and Afterpay at checkout.
Where it does not win: Switch Nutrition’s powder and Life Extension’s capsule both cost less per serve, and our label does not name the Magtein brand. What you get from us is a fixed three-capsule serve with nothing to measure, one ingredient, and a local order that arrives without an overseas wait. You can read the full label on our Magnesium L-Threonate 2000mg product page or browse the rest of our range.
How to take magnesium L-threonate
Our label says to take three capsules a day with a meal. The product page suggests all three in the evening if sleep is your focus, or two in the morning and one in the evening if daytime focus matters more. The trials above used 1g to 2g a day of magnesium L-threonate, so our 2,000mg serve matches the top of that range.
Judge it over weeks, not nights. The trials ran for three, four, six and 12 weeks, and the sleep changes in the shortest trial were measured over 21 days. If you also take another magnesium supplement, add the elemental amounts together. Our serve gives about 144mg, and the upper level from all supplements combined is 350mg a day for adults. Our magnesium L-threonate side effects guide covers what to watch for.
Who should talk to a doctor first
- Anyone with reduced kidney function. The kidneys clear excess magnesium, and the risk of too much rises when they cannot (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).
- Anyone taking oral bisphosphonates, which should be taken at least 2 hours before or after a magnesium supplement.
- Anyone taking tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, which should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after magnesium.
- Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking diuretics or other regular medicines. Ask your GP or pharmacist.
Other things Australians look for at Chemist Warehouse
Magnesium L-threonate is not the only longevity or nootropic ingredient people look for at Chemist Warehouse and come back with questions. We have checked the same question for TUDCA at Chemist Warehouse, NMN at Chemist Warehouse, glutathione at Chemist Warehouse and berberine at Chemist Warehouse. If you are building an evening routine around sleep and focus, our comparison of nootropic supplements in Australia shows where magnesium L-threonate fits. From our own range, NMN 500mg capsules and Saffron Extract 30mg capsules are the two products people most often ask about alongside it.
Magnesium threonate at Chemist Warehouse: frequently asked questions
Does Chemist Warehouse sell magnesium threonate?
Not on its website when we checked in September 2026. A search for “threonate” returned only hair-care products and “magtein” returned nothing. It sells many magnesium glycinate, citrate and oxide products instead. Stock changes, so search the site yourself if you want to be sure.
Does Chemist Warehouse sell magnesium threonate powder?
No. Neither capsules nor powder came up in our searches. In Australia, magnesium L-threonate powder is sold online, for example Switch Nutrition Mag3 at $49.95 for 30 serves, where one heaped scoop gives 2,000mg.
Is magnesium L-threonate available in Australia?
Yes, online. Eternal Elixir, Switch Nutrition and Apollo Nutraceuticals (through Elite Supps) sell it in Australia, and iHerb ships imported brands such as Life Extension. Our pick is Eternal Elixir Magnesium L-Threonate 2000mg, which ships from Sydney within 24 hours.
Which is better, magnesium glycinate or threonate?
They do different jobs. Glycinate gives far more elemental magnesium for the money, about $0.07 to $0.26 per 100mg at Chemist Warehouse against about $1.39 for our L-threonate, so it is the better buy for daily intake. L-threonate is the form tested in trials on memory, thinking and sleep. We found no trial that compared the two head to head.
Can I take magnesium glycinate and threonate together?
Many people do, glycinate for daily intake and L-threonate in the evening. Add up the elemental magnesium from both. The upper level from supplements is 350mg a day for adults, and our serve alone gives about 144mg. If you take regular medicines or have a kidney condition, talk to your doctor first.
Who should not take magnesium threonate?
Talk to your doctor before taking it if you have reduced kidney function, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take bisphosphonates, tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, diuretics or other regular medicines. Magnesium can reduce how well some of those medicines are absorbed, so timing matters.
How long does magnesium L-threonate take to work?
The trials measured changes at three, four, six and 12 weeks. The shortest found better ring-measured sleep stages after 21 days, and the memory and thinking results came at four to 12 weeks. Give it at least a full 30-day bottle before you judge it.
What is the best magnesium L-threonate in Australia?
Our pick is Eternal Elixir Magnesium L-Threonate 2000mg, which we make: 2,000mg per three-capsule serve, 90 capsules for $59.99, one ingredient, and dispatch from Sydney within 24 hours. Switch Nutrition’s powder has the lowest cost per serve, and Life Extension names Magtein on its label. The table above compares all four.

The bottom line
Chemist Warehouse does not sell magnesium L-threonate online, and its magnesium range is glycinate, citrate and oxide. Those are the right buy if you want magnesium intake at the lowest price. If you want the form that has been trialled for memory, focus and sleep, buy it online. Our pick is Eternal Elixir Magnesium L-Threonate 2000mg: a single-ingredient capsule at $2.00 a serve, with a 30-day money-back guarantee and dispatch from Sydney.
