Ca-AKG Supplement Australia: Benefits, Dosage and How It Fits Your Longevity Stack

Ca-AKG Supplement Australia: Benefits, Dosage and How It Fits Your Longevity Stack – Eternal Elixir Ca-AKG 500mg bottle

Last updated: September 28, 2026 · Originally published: April 9, 2026 · By Eternal Elixir Editorial

Ca-AKG (calcium alpha-ketoglutarate) is the calcium salt of alpha-ketoglutarate, a molecule your cells make every day as part of normal energy metabolism. As a Ca-AKG supplement it is sold in Australia for healthy ageing, mostly on the strength of mouse research and one uncontrolled human study, with a placebo-controlled trial still to report. Label serves on the products you can buy here run from 500 mg to 1,500 mg a day.

Our pick: Eternal Elixir Ca-AKG 500mg. Each capsule holds 500 mg of Ca-AKG, the label serve is one capsule a day, and a 90-capsule bottle lasts 90 days at $59.99, about $0.67 a day. It ships from Sydney within 24 hours. Eternal Elixir makes this product, so read our recommendation with that in mind. The comparison table further down uses each seller’s own label figures.

This guide covers what Ca-AKG is, what the research on its benefits shows and what it doesn’t, how much to take, how it fits a longevity stack with NMN and spermidine, and who should skip it. If you only want products and prices, our eight-product Ca-AKG comparison goes further.

What is Ca-AKG?

Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) sits in the Krebs cycle, the chain of reactions your mitochondria use to turn food into usable energy. It also feeds amino acid metabolism, and a family of enzymes that add and remove chemical tags on DNA and histones needs AKG to work. Your body makes it, so it isn’t something you have to get from food.

Supplements bind AKG to calcium. The salt is a stable powder that fits in a capsule, and it is the form used in the mouse lifespan study and the human studies below. Calcium is part of the weight: Naturecan’s label, for example, lists 205 mg of calcium and 753 mg of alpha-ketoglutaric acid in each 1,000 mg of Ca-AKG.

Interest in AKG for healthy ageing comes from how its levels change over a lifetime. The Buck Institute team behind the main mouse study notes that plasma AKG in people has been reported to fall about 10-fold between the ages of 40 and 80. Whether topping it up with a supplement changes how people age is the open question.

Ca-AKG is not AAKG

AAKG (arginine alpha-ketoglutarate) is a sports ingredient found in pre-workout powders. It pairs AKG with the amino acid arginine and is sold for training, not healthy ageing, and none of the ageing research used it. If a label says arginine alpha-ketoglutarate, it isn’t Ca-AKG.

Ca-AKG benefits: what the research shows

The evidence runs from worms to mice to a small group of people. Here is each step, with its limits.

In worms: AKG slows the energy machinery

In 2014 a UCLA team reported in Nature that AKG extended the lifespan of adult C. elegans worms (Chin and colleagues). AKG bound to ATP synthase, the enzyme that makes most of a cell’s energy, and partly inhibited it. That lowered ATP levels and oxygen use and increased autophagy, the cell’s recycling process, in worms and in mammalian cells, and the lifespan effect depended on TOR signalling.

Note the direction. AKG slowed the energy machinery slightly; it didn’t speed it up. The authors tie the effect to dietary restriction: AKG levels rise with starvation, and AKG gave no extra lifespan to worms already on a restricted diet. Some product pages say AKG boosts mitochondrial output. This study doesn’t show that.

In mice: longer, healthier lives

The study that made Ca-AKG popular came from the Buck Institute in 2020 (Asadi Shahmirzadi and colleagues, Cell Metabolism). Mice were moved at 540 days old, roughly 18 months and late middle age for a mouse, onto chow containing 2% CaAKG by weight. In females, median lifespan rose by 16.6% in one cohort and 10.5% in a second. In males, median lifespan rose by 9.6% and 12.8%, although the improvement in male survival was not statistically significant.

The larger effect was on health in later life. Treated mice showed fewer age-related signs, such as poor body condition and gait changes, and had lower levels of inflammatory cytokines in the blood, which the authors link to higher IL-10. They describe the reduction in frailty as more marked than the gain in lifespan.

Two cautions. Mouse results often don’t carry over to people, and 2% of a mouse’s diet doesn’t translate into a capsule count. Several authors also disclosed shares in Ponce de Leon Health, the company that sells the Rejuvant AKG supplement.

In people: one study, no placebo group

The human figure quoted most often is “8 years younger”. It comes from a 2021 retrospective analysis in Aging (Demidenko and colleagues) of 42 people, 28 men and 14 women, who had bought Rejuvant and taken it for 4 to 10 months, 7 on average. Rejuvant supplies 1 g of Ca-AKG a day in two timed-release tablets, with vitamin A in the men’s version and vitamin D in the women’s. A saliva DNA methylation test (TruAge) put their biological age an average of 8 years lower at the end than at the start.

That result needs heavy discounting. There was no control group, the participants chose to buy the product, the testing company had a customer service agreement with the seller, and one author is a consultant and board member for Ponce de Leon Health. The authors themselves say placebo-controlled testing is needed.

The trial that will tell us more

That placebo-controlled trial is ABLE, run at the National University of Singapore. It enrolled 120 generally healthy adults aged 40 to 60 whose DNA methylation age was older than their actual age, drawn from 467 people who expressed interest (Lim and colleagues, 2025). Participants take 1 g of sustained-release Ca-AKG or a placebo for 6 months, with 3 months of follow-up.

The main outcome is the change in DNA methylation age. The trial also measures inflammatory and metabolic blood markers, grip and leg strength, arterial stiffness, skin autofluorescence and aerobic capacity (Sandalova and colleagues, 2023). As of September 2026, its main results haven’t been published.

What that adds up to

AKG is a normal part of how your cells make energy, and blood levels fall with age. Raising them extended life and reduced frailty in mice, while the only human data on biological age is uncontrolled. No trial has shown that a Ca-AKG supplement slows ageing in people. If you take it, treat it as a low-cost bet on a well-studied metabolite while the ABLE results are pending, not as a sure thing.

Ca-AKG dosage: how much to take

There is no established daily amount for Ca-AKG. The figures that exist come from product labels and the human studies:

  • Human research: 1 g a day of a sustained-release form, in both the Rejuvant analysis and the ABLE trial.
  • Labels sold in Australia: 500 mg a day for Eternal Elixir (one capsule), 500 mg to 1,000 mg for Genetix (one to two capsules), 1,000 mg for ProHealth and Naturecan (two capsules) and 1,500 mg for Toniiq (three capsules).
  • Our label: take 1 capsule (500 mg) daily, or as directed by your physician. Don’t go above that without talking to your doctor.

Timing and food

Our label doesn’t set a time of day, and the ProHealth and Naturecan labels say Ca-AKG can be taken with or without food. Taking it at breakfast, next to any other morning supplements, is an easy habit to keep. If a capsule sits badly on an empty stomach, take it with a meal.

Count the calcium

Ca-AKG adds calcium to your day. Genetix lists 95 mg of calcium per 500 mg capsule, and Toniiq lists 300 mg per 1,500 mg serve. If you already take a calcium supplement or a multivitamin with calcium, add the calcium from your Ca-AKG to the total.

Prices as of Sep 2026, taken from each seller’s product page. Eternal Elixir makes Ca-AKG 500mg and it is our pick; every figure for the other products comes from their own labels and listings. “Cost per 1,000 mg” divides the bottle price by the total Ca-AKG in it, so different capsule sizes compare fairly.

Rows after ours are ordered by cost per 1,000 mg, cheapest first. Genetix has the lowest bottle price and the lowest cost per day at one capsule. Toniiq is the cheapest per gram if you follow its three-capsule serve, and ProHealth and Naturecan give the 1 g study amount in two plain capsules, although the studies used a sustained-release form. iHerb AU delivers free over AU$80, Nutrition Warehouse ships free over $150, and Naturecan ships from its UK warehouse in 7 to 14 business days, charging A$19.99 on orders up to A$99, A$9.99 above that and nothing over A$179.

Eternal Elixir Ca-AKG 500mg: label facts

Each capsule contains 500 mg of Ca-AKG (calcium alpha-ketoglutarate), with rice flour and a cellulose capsule, and there are 90 capsules (90 servings) in a bottle. Suggested use is 1 capsule daily or as directed by your physician. At $59.99 that works out to about $0.67 a day. Two bottles save 10%, three save 15% and five save 20%, and orders over $100 ship free.

It isn’t the cheapest per gram: at $1.33 per 1,000 mg, Toniiq and Genetix cost less. Where ours wins is one capsule a day from a bottle that lasts three months, priced in AUD, sent from Sydney within 24 hours and backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Suits you if you want a single capsule a day, a bottle that lasts a season, and local dispatch on the same order as NMN 500mg or Spermidine 10mg.

Doesn’t suit you if you want the 1 g used in the human studies from your label serve, or the lowest possible cost per gram.

How Ca-AKG fits your longevity stack

Ca-AKG is usually added to a stack rather than taken alone. No study has tested it in combination with NMN, spermidine or resveratrol, so add each one because it makes sense for you on its own evidence, not because the mix has been proven.

Ca-AKG and NMN

NMN is a precursor to NAD+, a coenzyme used in energy metabolism and by the sirtuin enzymes. Ca-AKG works elsewhere, supplying a Krebs cycle metabolite and the cofactor for AKG-dependent enzymes. The two don’t overlap, which is why they’re often paired. Our NMN 500mg capsules come in 90-capsule bottles at one capsule a day, so a bottle of each runs out at the same time.

For how NMN compares with NR and other NAD+ precursors, read our guide to NAD+ boosters. To compare NMN brands on cost per serve, see the best NMN supplements in Australia, and for a head-to-head on the two ingredients, Ca-AKG vs NMN.

Ca-AKG and spermidine

Both are discussed in relation to autophagy, by different routes: AKG through TOR signalling in the worm research above, and spermidine as a polyamine found in foods such as wheat germ. Our Spermidine 10mg comes as 10 mg per capsule, 90 capsules to a bottle. We cover the trade-offs in Ca-AKG vs spermidine for autophagy and longevity.

Building a full stack

Our Cellular Longevity Stack combines NMN 500mg, Spermidine 10mg and Trans-Pterostilbene 500mg. It doesn’t contain Ca-AKG, so adding a bottle of Ca-AKG doesn’t double anything up. If you’re weighing resveratrol against pterostilbene, our pterostilbene vs resveratrol comparison covers the difference.

Ca-AKG side effects and who should skip it

Ca-AKG is a salt of a metabolite your body already makes, but long-term safety data in people is thin. The human studies above were small or short, and ABLE’s safety findings aren’t out yet. Keep to the label serve, and check with your doctor first if any of these apply to you:

  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Toniiq’s and ProHealth’s labels both say not to use their products then.
  • You’re under 18. Toniiq’s label says it is intended only for healthy adults aged 18 and over.
  • You take prescription medicines, or you have kidney problems or another medical condition.
  • You already take a calcium supplement, since Ca-AKG adds more calcium.

If a capsule upsets your stomach, take it with food. Stop and talk to your doctor if anything unusual comes up after you start.

Ca-AKG supplement FAQ: frequently asked questions

What is Ca-AKG good for?

Ca-AKG supplies alpha-ketoglutarate, which your cells use in the Krebs cycle to make energy, and people take it to support healthy ageing. In mice it extended median lifespan and reduced frailty. In people, the only data on biological age comes from an uncontrolled study of 42 Rejuvant users, and the placebo-controlled ABLE trial hasn’t reported yet.

How much Ca-AKG should I take a day?

Follow your product’s label. Ours is one 500 mg capsule daily, or as directed by your physician. Labels sold in Australia range from 500 mg to 1,500 mg a day, and the human studies used 1 g a day of a sustained-release form. Talk to your doctor before going above your label serve.

When should I take Ca-AKG, morning or night?

No study has compared times of day, and Ca-AKG can be taken with or without food. Pick a time you’ll remember. Taking it at breakfast with any other morning supplements is an easy routine to keep.

How long does Ca-AKG take to work?

Ca-AKG isn’t a stimulant, so don’t expect to feel anything on day one. The human study measured DNA methylation age after 4 to 10 months, and the ABLE trial runs for 6 months. Give it at least a few months of daily use, and keep in mind that most of what it’s studied for can’t be felt day to day.

Can I take Ca-AKG with NMN?

Yes. It’s a common pairing, and the two work on different pathways: NMN feeds NAD+, while Ca-AKG supplies a Krebs cycle metabolite. No study has tested them together. Our NMN 500mg and Ca-AKG 500mg both come in 90-capsule bottles at one capsule a day.

Add NMN 500mg to cart · $59.99

Is Ca-AKG the same as AAKG?

No. AAKG is arginine alpha-ketoglutarate, a pre-workout ingredient sold for training. Ca-AKG is calcium alpha-ketoglutarate, the form used in the ageing research. Check the ingredient list before you buy.

Where can I buy Ca-AKG in Australia?

Ca-AKG is sold online in Australia. Eternal Elixir ships from Sydney within 24 hours. Nutrition Warehouse stocks Genetix Nutrition Essentials CA-AKG, iHerb AU sells imported brands such as Toniiq and ProHealth, and Naturecan sends orders to Australia from its UK warehouse.
