Quick answer: For almost everyone, spermidine capsules are the better buy. The human spermidine trials that state their format all gave it as capsules, and no study has compared powder with capsules, so there is no evidence that powder is absorbed better. Powder also has practical problems. A supplement serve is measured in milligrams (10mg in ours), far too little to scoop, and the plain spermidine powder we found for sale in Australia in September 2026 came from laboratory chemical suppliers, not supplement brands. Our pick is Eternal Elixir Spermidine 10mg: one 10mg capsule a day, 90 capsules to a bottle, $0.56 a day, sent from Sydney within 24 hours.
Eternal Elixir makes Spermidine 10mg, and it is our pick here, so weigh our view with that in mind. We sell spermidine as capsules only, not as a powder. Every competitor price and label detail below was read from that product’s own page in September 2026, and the studies are listed in full at the end. We have not lab-tested any of these products.

What spermidine does, and what has been shown in people
Spermidine is a polyamine, a small molecule found in almost all living tissues and in many foods. It is the main polyamine in plant foods, and wheat germ and soybeans are among the richest sources. In lab and animal research, spermidine switches on autophagy, the process cells use to break down and recycle worn-out parts. Mice given spermidine by mouth lived longer and kept better heart function in old age (Eisenberg et al., Nature Medicine, 2016). Those are mouse results, and they do not show the same happens in people.
The human evidence is thinner. In a study that followed 829 adults aged 45 to 84 from 1995 to 2015, people who ate the most spermidine had lower death rates than people who ate the least (Kiechl et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2018). That was an observational study built on food questionnaires, so it cannot show that spermidine caused the difference. The supplement trials so far are small and mostly test safety and memory. Our guide to what the spermidine research shows covers the benefits in more depth.
Which form did the human spermidine trials use?
The real question behind “powder or capsules” is whether the form changes what the spermidine does once swallowed. The trials give a clear answer on format, even if they say little about absorption:
- Capsules, 30 older adults aged 60 to 80, 3 months. A wheat germ extract giving 1.2mg of spermidine a day, or placebo. There were no differences between the groups in vital signs, weight, clinical chemistry or blood counts, and compliance, counted by leftover capsules, was above 85% (Schwarz et al., Aging, 2018).
- Capsules, 100 adults aged 60 to 90, 12 months. The SmartAge trial gave 750mg of wheat germ extract a day as six 125mg capsules, which supplied about 0.9mg of spermidine. Memory performance did not change compared with placebo, and adverse events were similar in both groups (Schwarz et al., JAMA Network Open, 2022).
- Capsules, 12 healthy volunteers, two 5-day phases. 15mg of spermidine a day from plant-based capsules holding 1.5mg each, so ten capsules a day. Plasma spermine rose compared with placebo, but plasma spermidine did not change. The authors concluded that swallowed spermidine is converted to spermine before it reaches the general circulation, and that doses below 15mg a day are unlikely to have short-term effects (Senekowitsch et al., Nutrients, 2023).
- 37 healthy men aged 50 to 70, up to 28 days. 40mg a day of high-purity spermidine trihydrochloride for 7 and 28 days, or placebo. Clinical, lipid, chemistry and blood-count measures did not change significantly, and serum and urine polyamines barely moved. The abstract does not state the dose form, and the trial was funded by the company that makes the ingredient (Keohane et al., Nutrition Research, 2024).
So capsules are the tested format, and nobody has tried plain spermidine powder in a published human trial. The trials also show how little is settled. Doses have ranged from under 1mg to 40mg a day, and the two studies that measured blood polyamines found little or no rise in spermidine itself.
How our serve compares with the trials: one Eternal Elixir capsule gives 10mg of spermidine. That is well above the roughly 1mg a day from wheat germ extract in the memory trials, and below the 15mg and 40mg used in the two shorter studies. No trial has yet shown that 10mg a day changes a health outcome in people, and we won’t claim one has. For how much to take, see our spermidine dosage guide.

Is spermidine powder absorbed better than capsules?
Nobody has tested it. We searched PubMed in September 2026 and found no human study that gave the same dose of spermidine as a powder and as a capsule and compared blood levels. Claims that powder “absorbs faster” because it skips the capsule shell are a guess.
The Senekowitsch study points to where the real limit may sit. Even at 15mg a day from capsules, plasma spermidine did not rise, because the body appears to convert it to spermine first. If that holds, the time a capsule shell takes to open is unlikely to decide how much spermidine you get, although no one has measured it directly.
What a capsule shell does do is keep the powder sealed until you swallow it. Ours is a standard cellulose capsule, and the product page lists the full contents as spermidine (as spermidine trihydrochloride), rice flour and the cellulose shell.
Spermidine powder in Australia: what is actually for sale
Search for spermidine powder and you will mostly find three things, and none of them is a supplement you can scoop into a drink.
- Laboratory chemicals. Two Australian lab suppliers list spermidine trihydrochloride powder: one sells 1 g for $95.00 plus GST and a $35 freight fee per order, and the other sells 5 g for $358.50 plus GST with a 63-day lead time. These are reagents for laboratories, sold without serving directions or a supplement label, and we don’t suggest taking them.
- Bulk wheat germ extract. Ingredient wholesalers sell wheat germ extract powder standardised to 1% spermidine, mainly to supplement makers. At 1%, 10mg of spermidine means 1 g of powder, and wheat germ extract contains wheat, so it also contains gluten.
- Capsules and tablets. All the spermidine supplements we priced for Australian buyers came as capsules or tablets. They are in the table below.
Dose accuracy is the second problem. A 10mg serve is a hundredth of a gram, which a kitchen scale cannot register at all. Even a jeweller’s scale that reads in single milligrams moves in steps of a tenth of the dose, and fine powder clings to scoops and weighing paper.
Storage is the third. One lab supplier’s product sheet describes spermidine as “very hygroscopic and air sensitive” and says to store it at 2 to 8°C. That sheet covers the free base, while supplements use spermidine trihydrochloride, a salt form. We found no published data on how quickly an opened tub of spermidine trihydrochloride loses potency in a home kitchen, so treat any percentage loss you see quoted as a guess. Wheat germ products have a storage issue of their own: one Australian seller says its extract is defatted to stop the natural oils in wheat germ going rancid.
Spermidine supplements in Australia: cost per day
Since plain powder isn’t sold as a supplement here, the useful comparison is between the capsules and tablets you can actually order. We priced each product from its own page and worked out the cost per day at the serve on its label. Prices are as of Sep 2026.
| Product | Form | Spermidine per serve (label) | Pack | Price (AUD, as of Sep 2026) | Cost per day at the label serve | Label notes and shipping | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eternal Elixir Spermidine 10mg (our pick) | Capsule (cellulose) | 10mg per capsule, as spermidine trihydrochloride | 90 capsules | $49.99 | $0.56 ($0.44 when you buy five bottles) | 1 capsule daily with a meal. Ships from Sydney within 24 hours | Eternal Elixir |
| Neurogan Health Spermidine | Tablet | 10mg spermidine 3HCl per tablet | 120 tablets | $34.67 | $0.29 | 1 tablet daily. Sold through iHerb | iHerb |
| Longevity+ Spermidine 10mg | Capsule | 10mg spermidine trihydrochloride per capsule | 120 capsules | $79.00 | $0.66 | 1 capsule daily. Delivery in 5 to 10 working days | Longevity+ |
| Naturecan Spermidine | Capsule | 5mg per capsule | 60 capsules | $40.00 | $0.67 at 5mg ($1.33 for 10mg) | 60 serves. 180 capsules cost $100.00 | Naturecan |
| Primeadine Original | Capsule (wheat germ extract) | 1mg per 3 capsules | 90 capsules (30 serves) | $149.95 | $5.00 | Contains wheat (gluten). Sold through OptimOZ | OptimOZ |

Neurogan deserves a fair note: at $0.29 a day it was the lowest cost per day we found, for the same 10mg amount on the label. It is a tablet rather than a capsule and is sold through iHerb rather than shipped from Sydney. Among the capsules, ours costs $0.56 a day on a single bottle, less than Longevity+ at $0.66 and Naturecan at $0.67 for half the amount. Primeadine is a different kind of product: a wheat germ extract closer to what the memory trials used, at about 1mg a day for $5.00. Our spermidine supplements compared in Australia sets out the wider market.
Spermidine trihydrochloride or wheat germ extract?
The form that matters more than powder or capsule is what the spermidine comes from. Spermidine supplements in Australia fall into two groups:
- Spermidine trihydrochloride. A salt form of spermidine, listed on the labels of ours, Neurogan and Longevity+ at 10mg a serve. The 40mg-a-day safety trial used a high-purity version of this form.
- Plant extracts. Wheat germ extract, as in Primeadine Original and the two memory trials, supplies around 1mg a day. The SmartAge extract also carried about 0.5mg of spermine and 0.2mg of putrescine, two related polyamines, in each day’s 750mg. Extracts made from wheat contain gluten. The capsules in the Senekowitsch study used algae powder and soybean extract instead.
Two practical checks follow. If you avoid gluten, check whether the product is a wheat germ extract. And compare the milligrams of spermidine per serve, not the milligrams of extract, because a large extract figure on the front of a pack can hide about 1mg of spermidine.
How to take spermidine capsules
- Follow the label. Ours says one capsule daily with a meal. Taking it at the same meal each day makes it easy to remember.
- Swallow it whole. Our directions are for the capsule as it comes. We haven’t tested the contents mixed into food or drink, so we can’t tell you how they taste or keep once opened.
- Store the bottle well. Close the lid straight after each dose and keep it in a cupboard away from the kettle, the stove and a sunny windowsill. Check the best-before date when the bottle arrives.
- Check with your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or take prescription medicines.
Capsules make storage simple in a hot Australian summer, which is one more reason they suit a daily habit. The same powder-or-capsule question comes up with other supplements, and we have looked at it for NMN powder and capsules, TMG powder and capsules and shilajit resin and capsules.
Why Eternal Elixir Spermidine 10mg is a capsule
We chose capsules because they suit how most people take spermidine: one small dose each day, for months. Eternal Elixir Spermidine 10mg holds 10mg of spermidine, as spermidine trihydrochloride, in each cellulose capsule, with rice flour as the only other ingredient. The label says one capsule daily with a meal, and each bottle holds 90.
- A full 10mg in one capsule. Some capsules on the market hold 5mg, so you need two of those for the same amount.
- Three months per bottle. That is 90 capsules at one a day.
- $0.56 a day on a single bottle. Two bottles save 10% ($89.98), three save 15% ($127.47) and five save 20% ($199.96), which brings it to $0.44 a day. Orders over $100 ship free.
- Sent from Sydney within 24 hours, with a 30-day money-back guarantee and Afterpay available.
Who it suits: adults who want 10mg of spermidine a day without weighing anything, in the capsule format the trials used, from a local seller.
Who it doesn’t suit: anyone after the lowest price per day, where Neurogan’s tablets cost less; anyone who wants a wheat germ extract like the one in the memory trials; and anyone who wants doses below 10mg. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or take prescription medicines, talk to your doctor before taking spermidine.
Some people take spermidine alongside NMN. Our NMN 500mg gives 500mg in each capsule, 90 to a bottle, and the card below adds both to your cart together. Our spermidine vs NMN comparison explains how the two differ.
If you would rather buy them as one product, the Cellular Longevity Stack ($139.99) combines NMN, spermidine and pterostilbene. For another autophagy-focused option, our Ca-AKG and spermidine comparison sets out the evidence for each, and Ca-AKG 500mg is in our range too.
The verdict: spermidine powder or capsules?
Our pick: Eternal Elixir Spermidine 10mg capsules. You get 10mg of spermidine in one capsule for $0.56 a day, or $0.44 when you buy five bottles, in the format the human trials used, with nothing to weigh or refrigerate.
If price is all that matters: Neurogan’s 10mg tablets on iHerb were the lowest cost per day we found, at $0.29.
If you were set on powder: we found none sold as a supplement in Australia. The plain spermidine powder on sale here is a laboratory chemical, and a 10mg serve is too small to measure reliably at home.

Spermidine powder vs capsules: frequently asked questions
Is spermidine powder better than capsules?
No study has shown it is. The human trials that name their format used capsules, and none has compared powder with capsules. Capsules give a fixed dose with nothing to weigh or store in the fridge, and plain spermidine powder in Australia is sold only as a laboratory chemical. Our pick is Eternal Elixir Spermidine 10mg at $0.56 a day.

What is the best form of spermidine to take?
A capsule or tablet with the spermidine amount stated on the label. Capsules are the format used in the human trials. Choose spermidine trihydrochloride for 10mg in one capsule, or a wheat germ extract if you want something closer to the roughly 1mg a day used in the memory trials. Our pick is Eternal Elixir Spermidine 10mg capsules.
Add Spermidine 10mg to cart · $49.99
Is spermidine powder absorbed faster than capsules?
There is no evidence either way. No published human study has compared the same dose as powder and as a capsule. In a 2023 study, 15mg a day from capsules raised plasma spermine but not spermidine, which suggests the body converts spermidine before it reaches the blood, whatever the form.
What does spermidine do for the body?
Spermidine is a polyamine found in almost all living tissues, where it takes part in normal cell growth and in autophagy, the recycling of worn-out cell parts. In mice, oral spermidine extended lifespan. In people, higher dietary spermidine has been linked with lower death rates in an observational study, but supplement trials have been small and have not shown clear benefits yet.
What foods are high in spermidine?
Wheat germ and soybeans stand out in food analyses. Mushrooms, peas, hazelnuts, pistachios, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and green beans also contain it, and spermidine is the main polyamine in plant foods generally. Some aged cheeses contain it too, though amounts vary a lot between cheeses.
Is spermidine hard on the liver?
We found no human study reporting liver problems at supplement doses. In the 28-day trial of 40mg a day in 37 older men, clinical chemistry and blood counts did not change significantly compared with placebo, and the 3-month trial at 1.2mg a day found no differences in clinical chemistry. These were short trials in healthy people, so if you have liver disease or take prescription medicines, talk to your doctor first.
How much spermidine should I take per day?
There is no established daily amount. Human studies have used about 1mg a day from wheat germ extract, 15mg a day in a short absorption study and 40mg a day in a 28-day safety study. Our capsule gives 10mg, and the label says one a day with a meal.
Where can I buy spermidine in Australia?
Mostly online. Australian sellers such as Eternal Elixir and Longevity+ sell 10mg capsules, and overseas sellers ship tablets and capsules here through iHerb and Naturecan’s Australian store. Ours ships from Sydney within 24 hours, and orders over $100 ship free.
How long does a bottle of spermidine capsules last?
An Eternal Elixir bottle holds 90 capsules. At the label serve of one capsule a day, that is three months. Other brands sell 60 or 120 capsules, and some need two or three capsules per serve, so divide the capsule count by the capsules per serve to compare.
