Nicotinamide Riboside Benefits Australia 2026: NAD+ Guide

Nicotinamide Riboside Benefits Australia 2026: NAD+ Guide – Eternal Elixir Pure NR 500mg bottle

Last updated: November 1, 2026 · Originally published: July 26, 2026 · By Eternal Elixir Editorial

Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a form of vitamin B3 that your cells turn into NAD+, the coenzyme they use to convert food into energy. The nicotinamide riboside benefit that is clearly shown in people is a higher NAD+ level: in a 140-person trial, 100, 300 and 1,000 mg a day raised whole-blood NAD+ by 22%, 51% and 142% within two weeks. Trials that looked for changes beyond NAD+, such as better blood-sugar handling or faster muscle metabolism, have mostly found none so far. If you want an NR supplement in Australia, our Pure NR 500mg gives 500 mg per capsule, with 90 capsules in each bottle.

Quick Answer

Looking for an NR supplement in Australia? Start with Eternal Elixir Pure NR 500mg. Each capsule holds 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside, a 90-capsule bottle lasts three months at one a day, and it costs $59.99, or $0.67 a day, sent from Sydney. If you specifically want Niagen, the branded NR that its maker supplied for three of the trials below, Tru Niagen gives 300 mg per capsule at a higher cost per day (see the table below).

Eternal Elixir makes Pure NR 500mg, so this is our recommendation, not a neutral review. We report the trials as they stand, including the ones that found no effect. Prices checked 26 September 2026.

This guide covers what NAD+ is and why it falls with age, how NR becomes NAD+, what each human trial used and found, what hasn’t been shown, how the NR supplements sold in Australia compare on price and dose, how much to take, and who should be careful.

Key numbers:

  • 140 adults took 100, 300 or 1,000 mg of NR or a placebo for 8 weeks. Whole-blood NAD+ rose by 22%, 51% and 142%, and side effects were no more common than on placebo.
  • 24 adults aged 55 to 79 finished a 6-week crossover trial at 1,000 mg a day. NAD+ in their blood immune cells rose by about 60%. Lower blood pressure readings were a trend only and did not hold up after statistical correction.
  • 40 men with a BMI above 30 took 2,000 mg a day for 12 weeks. There were no serious adverse events, but insulin sensitivity and body composition did not change.
  • $0.67 a day for our Pure NR 500mg at one capsule, with 90 capsules in the bottle.

Nicotinamide riboside benefits at a glance

Many claims about NR come from mouse studies. The table separates what has been measured in people from what has only been seen in animals.

What is NAD+, and why does it fall with age?

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every living cell. It shuttles electrons between chemical reactions, switching back and forth between NAD+ and its loaded form, NADH, so your cells can turn glucose and fat into ATP, the molecule that powers them. Enzymes called sirtuins and PARPs, which help regulate genes and look after DNA, also use up NAD+ as they work. Your cells therefore have to keep making more.

The body builds NAD+ from the amino acid tryptophan and from the forms of vitamin B3: nicotinic acid (niacin), nicotinamide and nicotinamide riboside. So NAD+ is not vitamin B3 itself, but vitamin B3 is its main raw material, and NR belongs to the vitamin B3 family.

NAD+ falls with age in people, not only in lab animals. Researchers at UNSW in Sydney measured NAD+ and related compounds in blood plasma from healthy adults aged 20 to 87. People over 60 had significantly lower plasma NAD+ than people aged 20 to 40. Whether topping NAD+ back up changes how you age is the open question the rest of this guide deals with. If you are comparing NAD+ itself with its precursors, our guide to NMN versus NAD+ supplements covers the difference, and our roundup of the best NAD+ supplements in Australia compares the products.

How nicotinamide riboside raises NAD+

Once absorbed, NR is changed by enzymes called NR kinases into nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), which is then made into NAD+. That short route is why NR and NMN are both called NAD+ precursors. It also means NR is not a stimulant. It supplies a raw material your cells already use.

The first human trial of how NR moves through the body was published in Nature Communications in 2016. Single doses of 100, 300 and 1,000 mg produced dose-dependent rises in blood NAD+ and related compounds. In a pilot with one volunteer, a single dose raised blood NAD+ as much as 2.7-fold. The team also found that a compound called NAAD rose sharply after NR, and proposed it as a sensitive sign that NAD+ is being topped up. ChromaDex, which makes the Niagen form of NR, supplied the NR and sponsored the study.

A small open-label study in PLoS One in 2017 gave 8 healthy volunteers 250 mg of NR, rising over a week to 1,000 mg twice a day. At steady state, whole-blood NAD+ was 100% above baseline, so it doubled, and no adverse events were reported. It had no placebo group, so it shows what happens to NAD+, not what that does for you.

What the human trials on nicotinamide riboside show

Blood NAD+ goes up, and the rise scales with dose

A 2019 trial in Scientific Reports enrolled 140 overweight but otherwise healthy adults, with an average BMI of about 28. They were randomised to a placebo or to 100, 300 or 1,000 mg of Niagen once a day, 35 people per group, for 8 weeks. Whole-blood NAD+ rose by 22%, 51% and 142% within two weeks and stayed up for the rest of the study. There were no reports of flushing and no difference in adverse events between NR and placebo. ChromaDex funded the study, and two of the three authors worked for the company.

Blood pressure and artery stiffness

A University of Colorado team ran a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in healthy men and women aged 55 to 79. Of 30 people randomised, 24 finished. Each took 500 mg of NR twice a day (1,000 mg a day) for 6 weeks and a placebo for 6 weeks, in random order. NAD+ in blood immune cells rose by about 60% compared with placebo, and the supplement was well tolerated.

Systolic blood pressure and aortic stiffness trended lower on NR, most of all in people whose systolic reading started between 120 and 139 mmHg. Those changes were not statistically significant after correction for multiple comparisons, and the authors described them as hypotheses for a larger trial. They also noted that 1,000 mg a day was above the label dose of the commercial product at the time and should be treated as investigational until more safety data were in.

Muscle and inflammation markers

A University of Birmingham trial gave 12 men aged 70 to 80 1 g of NR a day for 21 days, in a placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover design. NR raised the NAD+ metabolome in their thigh muscle, seen as higher NAAD and more nicotinamide breakdown products. It did not change mitochondrial energy production in the muscle. Levels of several inflammatory cytokines in the blood went down. So oral NR reaches ageing human muscle, but this short trial showed no gain in muscle energy output.

Metabolism and body composition

A trial at Aarhus University in Denmark gave 40 sedentary men aged 40 to 70, all with a BMI above 30, either 1,000 mg of NR twice a day (2,000 mg a day) or a placebo for 12 weeks. NR did not improve insulin sensitivity, glucose production, resting energy use, fat burning or body composition. There were no serious adverse events and safety blood tests stayed normal. It shows that taking NR does not automatically change whole-body metabolism.

What hasn’t been shown yet

  • Longer life in people. The lifespan result comes from a 2016 mouse study in Science. No human trial has tested NR for lifespan, and mouse results do not carry over to people.
  • More day-to-day energy. None of the trials above measured how energetic people felt. Labels that promise more energy rest on the NAD+ rise, not on a measured change in how people feel.
  • Blood pressure. The signal comes from 24 people and did not survive statistical correction.
  • Long-term use. The trials ran from 3 to 12 weeks. Two were funded or sponsored by ChromaDex, the company that makes the Niagen ingredient.

That is why we present NR as a way to support healthy NAD+ levels as you age, and not as a shortcut to any particular result. For the same evidence check on another NAD+ precursor, see what the research says about NMN’s benefits.

Who each one suits

  • Eternal Elixir Pure NR 500mg suits you if you want 500 mg in a single capsule, a three-month bottle and dispatch in 1 business day. It doesn’t suit you if you want the Niagen-branded ingredient specifically, because we don’t claim our NR is Niagen.
  • Naturecan NR suits you if you prefer a 300 mg serve in a 90-capsule bottle, and it is the second-cheapest per day here. It doesn’t suit you if you want it quickly: Naturecan ships to Australia from its UK warehouse, transit takes 7 to 14 business days, and shipping is $19.99 on orders under $99.
  • Melrose FutureLab NAD+ Booster suits you if you already shop at Chemist Warehouse, and it adds dimethylglycine. It doesn’t suit you if you want a longer supply, as the bottle holds 30 capsules.
  • Tru Niagen suits you if you want Niagen, the NR chloride that ChromaDex supplied for three of the trials in this guide. It doesn’t suit you if cost matters most, as it is the dearest per day here.

Nicotinamide riboside vs NMN

NR and NMN are the two best-known NAD+ precursors, and they sit one chemical step apart, since NR becomes NMN on its way to NAD+. Both have placebo-controlled human trials showing they raise blood NAD+. NMN’s main dose-finding trial gave 80 healthy middle-aged adults 300, 600 or 900 mg a day for 60 days, and all three doses raised blood NAD+ compared with placebo. Neither has been tested head to head against the other for an outcome you would feel.

In practice, people choose on the evidence they find most convincing, the dose per capsule and price. Eternal Elixir sells both at 500 mg per capsule, so you can switch without changing brands. If you lean towards NMN, our comparison of the best NMN supplements in Australia is the next read. Some people also pair either precursor with trans-resveratrol. None of the trials in this guide tested that combination.

How much nicotinamide riboside to take

The trials in this guide used 100 mg to 2,000 mg a day. In the 140-person trial, 300 mg raised whole-blood NAD+ by 51% and 1,000 mg by 142%, so more NR produced more NAD+ over 8 weeks.

Our directions for Pure NR are one 500 mg capsule a day, preferably in the morning. That serve sits between the 300 mg and 1,000 mg arms of the 140-person trial. It is half the 1,000 mg used in the Colorado and Birmingham trials and a quarter of the 2,000 mg used in the Aarhus trial. None of the trials in this guide used 500 mg a day, and none compared morning with evening dosing. Follow the label, and read our NR dosage guide for Australians for the full range of doses studied. Our guide on how to dose NMN uses the same approach for the other precursor.

Is nicotinamide riboside safe? Side effects

Across the trials here, NR was well tolerated:

  • In the 140-person trial, adverse events were no more common on 100 to 1,000 mg a day than on placebo over 8 weeks. Nobody reported flushing, the warm skin reaction high doses of nicotinic acid are known for, and LDL cholesterol did not rise.
  • In the Aarhus trial, 2,000 mg a day for 12 weeks caused no serious adverse events, and safety blood tests stayed normal.
  • In the 8-person open-label study, no adverse events were reported at up to 1,000 mg twice a day.

The longest of these trials ran for 12 weeks, so there is little data on years of use. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take prescription medicines or are under a doctor’s care for a health condition, talk to your doctor before you start. NR is a nutrient and not a substitute for medical care.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main benefits of nicotinamide riboside?

The benefit shown in people is higher NAD+. In a 140-person trial, 100, 300 and 1,000 mg a day raised whole-blood NAD+ by 22%, 51% and 142%. NAD+ supports normal energy production in cells. Trials looking for effects on blood-sugar handling, muscle energy output and body composition have not found them so far.

Is NAD+ just vitamin B3?

No. NAD+ is a coenzyme your body builds from vitamin B3 and from the amino acid tryptophan. Nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and nicotinamide riboside are all forms of vitamin B3 that the body can turn into NAD+.

What is an NAD+ supplement used for?

People take NAD+ precursors such as NR and NMN to support healthy NAD+ levels as they get older, because plasma NAD+ is lower in people over 60 than in younger adults. The trials show these precursors raise blood NAD+. Effects you would notice day to day have not been shown.

Is nicotinamide riboside better than NMN?

Neither has been shown to be better. Both raise blood NAD+ in placebo-controlled human trials, and they have never been compared head to head for an outcome you would feel. NMN is one step closer to NAD+, while NR has to be converted to NMN first. Eternal Elixir sells both at 500 mg per capsule.

Is NR really worth taking?

If your goal is to raise NAD+, the evidence that NR does this is solid. If you expect a change you can feel, such as more energy or better metabolism, the trials so far don’t support that. NR suits people who want to support NAD+ as a long-term habit and accept that the outcome research is still early.

How much nicotinamide riboside should I take each day?

Trials have used 100 to 2,000 mg a day, and the NAD+ rise grew with dose. Our directions for Pure NR are one 500 mg capsule a day, preferably in the morning. Our full NR dosage guide walks through each dose studied.

Does nicotinamide riboside have any side effects?

In the trials here, adverse events were no more common than on placebo at up to 1,000 mg a day, and 2,000 mg a day for 12 weeks caused no serious adverse events. Nobody in the 140-person trial reported flushing. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medicines, check with your doctor first.

What is the best NR supplement in Australia?

Our pick is Eternal Elixir Pure NR 500mg: 500 mg per capsule, 90 capsules a bottle and $0.67 a day, shipped from Sydney. Eternal Elixir makes it, so weigh that. If you want the Niagen ingredient in particular, Tru Niagen is the option, at a higher cost per day.

Add Pure NR 500mg to cart · $59.99

Is nicotinamide riboside available in Australia?

Yes. NR is sold in Australia as a dietary supplement, online and in some pharmacies, including Chemist Warehouse for the Melrose FutureLab NAD+ Booster. Eternal Elixir ships Pure NR from Sydney. If you are also weighing NMN, our notes on where to buy NMN in Australia cover the same ground.

The verdict

NR reliably raises NAD+ in people, and the rise grows with dose. That much is well shown. What higher NAD+ does for how you feel, age or burn energy has not been shown in human trials yet, and the lifespan results are from mice. If you want to support healthy NAD+ levels with a simple daily capsule, Pure NR 500mg gives you 500 mg a day for $0.67, with three months in each bottle.
