**The berberine dosage used in most human trials is 900 to 1,500 mg a day, split into two or three doses and taken with meals. This berberine dosage guide explains where that range comes from: trials in adults gave 500 mg two or three times a day for 3 to 4 months, and a review of 18 placebo-controlled trials covered 900 to 1,500 mg a day. Start with 500 mg once a day with a meal, add a second dose after a week if your stomach is fine, and talk to your doctor before you go higher, especially if you take any prescription medicine.**

Quick Answer
**Berberine dose:** trials used 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day, mostly as 500 mg two or three times a day, and Examine advises taking it with meals. Start at 500 mg a day. **Our pick: Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg.** Its label serve is one 500 mg capsule a day, and any higher amount should be one your doctor directs. A bottle holds 90 capsules for $49.99, which is $0.56 per 500 mg, sent from Sydney.
Eternal Elixir makes Berberine HCl 500mg, so this is our recommendation, not a neutral review. Berberine can change how some medicines work: check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you take any.

This guide covers the doses the trials used, how to start, how much to take for each goal the trials measured, when to take it, how long it takes, what to avoid, medicine interactions, and how the berberine products sold in Australia compare.

**Key numbers:**

- **1,000 to 1,500 mg a day** is what the main glucose trials gave, as 500 mg two or three times a day.

- **18 trials and 1,788 adults** were pooled in a 2023 review of berberine against placebo, at 900 to 1,500 mg a day.

- **34.5%** of patients in a 1,500 mg a day trial had short-lived gut side effects.

- **2.8 times** the blood exposure in women compared with men after the same single 1,000 mg dose, in a 2025 study of 44 healthy adults.

- **$0.56 per 500 mg** for our Berberine HCl 500mg.

## What Dose of Berberine Do the Studies Actually Use?

Berberine is a yellow plant compound found in barberry and Indian barberry, among others. Supplements sell it as berberine HCl, or as a barberry extract with a stated berberine content. The human trials gave between 900 and 2,000 mg a day, and most sit between 1,000 and 1,500 mg. Examine, the supplement research site, gives "900-2,000mg a day, divided into three to four doses" as the standard dose.

### Berberine Dosage Quick Reference

These are the human studies that tell you most about dose.

|

Study
| Who
| Berberine a day
| How long
| What happened

| Zhang 2008
| 116 adults with raised blood glucose and blood lipids
| 1,000 mg, or placebo
| 3 months
| Fasting glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol all fell more than on placebo. Five people on berberine had mild to moderate constipation.

| Yin 2008
| 36 adults with newly found raised blood glucose, plus 48 adults whose blood glucose was not well controlled
| 1,500 mg (500 mg three times a day)
| 3 months
| Glucose measures improved from the first week. 20 patients (34.5%) had short-lived gut side effects. No liver or kidney damage was seen.

| Ming 2021
| 300 adults with newly found raised blood glucose, 49 on berberine alone
| 1,000 mg (500 mg twice a day), or placebo
| 16 weeks
| Fasting glucose fell 0.50 mmol/L more than on placebo. Stomach discomfort in 10.2% on berberine against 7.1% on placebo.

| Blais 2023 (review)
| 18 placebo-controlled trials, 1,788 adults
| 900 to 1,500 mg
| 4 to 24 weeks
| LDL cholesterol down 0.46 mmol/L and triglycerides down 0.34 mmol/L against placebo. Gut side effects in 2% to 23% on berberine against 2% to 15% on placebo. No serious adverse events.

| Blöcher 2025
| 44 healthy adults, half of them women
| One 1,000 mg dose
| 48 hours of blood tests
| Berberine was poorly absorbed overall, and women had 2.8 times the blood exposure of men.

Two things stand out. First, 1,000 mg a day was enough to move glucose and lipid measures in two placebo-controlled trials, so 1,500 mg is not the only dose with evidence. Second, the higher the daily amount, the more gut complaints the trials recorded, though these were different people in different trials, so it is not a clean dose comparison.

## How to Start: A Practical Dosing Ramp

Gut symptoms are the main reason people stop berberine, so a slow start makes sense. Bulk Nutrients' label puts it simply: "If you are new to Berberine HCL, start with 1 capsule daily and gradually increase as needed to assess tolerance." Examine warns that "too much berberine at once can result in stomach upset, cramping, and diarrhea".

A cautious starting plan

- **Week 1:** 500 mg once a day, with your largest meal.

- **Week 2:** only if your doctor agrees and your stomach is fine, 500 mg twice a day, with breakfast and dinner. This is the 1,000 mg a day used in the Zhang and Ming trials.

- **After that:** only if your doctor agrees, 500 mg with each of three meals, the 1,500 mg a day used in the Yin trial.

If you get wind, cramps, diarrhoea or constipation, go back to the last amount that felt fine and stay there for another week.

This ramp is a practical plan built from label advice and trial doses. No trial has compared ramps, so treat it as a sensible default, not a tested protocol.

## Berberine Dosage by Health Goal

Almost all berberine trials measured blood glucose, blood lipids or both, so those are the only goals with trial doses behind them.

### Healthy blood glucose

The glucose trials used 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day for 3 to 4 months. In Zhang 2008, 1,000 mg a day lowered fasting glucose and HbA1c more than placebo. In Ming 2021, 1,000 mg a day lowered fasting glucose by 0.50 mmol/L more than placebo over 16 weeks. The Yin trial used 1,500 mg a day and reported glucose changes from the first week. If you take any medicine that lowers blood glucose, do not add berberine without your doctor, because the two can add together.

### Healthy cholesterol and triglycerides

The 2023 review pooled trials at 900 to 1,500 mg a day for 4 to 24 weeks. Against placebo, LDL cholesterol fell by 0.46 mmol/L and triglycerides by 0.34 mmol/L. The authors called these small reductions. HDL cholesterol rose slightly overall, with a rise in women but not in men.

### Weight

No trial has set a berberine dose for weight, and the trials above did not test it as their main outcome. Be wary of anyone who quotes a weight loss figure for a berberine dose, and never use berberine in place of a prescribed medicine.

## Which Berberine Product Should You Use?

For dosing, the most useful label detail is how much berberine sits in each capsule or tablet, because that decides how easily you can start low and step up. We took each price, pack and direction from the seller's own page in September 2026.

### Who each one suits, and who it doesn't

- **Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg (our pick).** Suits adults who want 500 mg steps with nothing else in the capsule besides rice flour, and a 90-capsule bottle shipped from Sydney. It is not the cheapest per 500 mg, and it doesn't suit someone who wants to pick up a bottle at a pharmacy today.

- **Bulk Nutrients Berberine HCL.** Suits people who want a big bottle at a low cost per 500 mg and a label that spells out a slow start.

- **Wagner Berberine 500.** Has the lowest cost per 500 mg here and is sold at Chemist Warehouse. It contains soy, so it doesn't suit anyone avoiding soy.

- **Caruso's Berberine 500.** Suits pharmacy shoppers who want the label to cover up to 1,500 mg with meals. The label also says to take it two hours away from pharmaceutical medicines.

- **Wanderlust Ultra Strength 800mg.** Suits someone whose doctor wants a higher daily amount in fewer tablets. At 800 mg a tablet it is hard to start low, and it contains soya and sulfites.

### Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg: what's in the bottle

- Berberine HCl, 500 mg per capsule, from a 20:1 concentrate, with rice flour and a cellulose capsule.

- 90 capsules a bottle: 90 days at one a day, 45 days at two, or 30 days at three.

- Label directions: one capsule on an empty stomach, or as your doctor directs.

- $49.99 a bottle, or $0.56 per capsule. Two bottles cost $89.98 (10% off), three cost $127.47 (15% off) and five cost $199.96 (20% off).

- Ships from Sydney within 24 hours, with free shipping over $100, a 30-day money-back guarantee and Afterpay.

To be plain about the dose: one capsule a day is 500 mg, which is less than the 1,000 to 1,500 mg the trials used. Examine and most labels sold here advise taking berberine with meals, while our label says an empty stomach. If an empty stomach upsets you, take the capsule with a meal. If your doctor suggests a trial-level amount, it's easy to reach with a second or third capsule at other meals.

If you want berberine alongside TUDCA and glutathione, our [Metabolic Wellness Stack](https://eternalelixir.com.au/product/metabolic-wellness-stack/) includes this same berberine, so don't buy both.

## When to Take Berberine

- **With meals.** Examine says berberine "should be taken with a meal, or shortly after". Most labels sold here say the same, and food makes gut symptoms less likely.

- **Split across the day.** The trials gave 500 mg two or three times a day rather than one large dose, and Examine suggests three to four doses. Berberine is poorly absorbed, and a single big dose is more likely to upset your stomach.

- **At the same meals each day.** The trials ran for 3 to 4 months of steady daily use. Tie your doses to meals you rarely skip.

If you take any medicine, keep berberine at least two hours away from it unless your doctor says otherwise. That is what Caruso's label says, and it is a sensible rule because berberine changes how the body handles some medicines (see below).

## How Long Does Berberine Take to Work?

In the Yin trial, fasting and after-meal glucose were lower from the first week. The measures most people care about, such as HbA1c and cholesterol, were checked at 3 months in the main trials, and the review's trials ran 4 to 24 weeks. So give a steady dose at least 12 weeks before you judge it, and ask your doctor about checking your blood tests before and after.

The review's longest trial ran 24 weeks, so longer use has less data behind it. Many people keep taking it once their doctor is happy with their results, but that is a decision to make with them.

## Berberine Dosage: What to Avoid

- **Starting at the full trial dose.** Jumping straight to 1,500 mg makes gut symptoms more likely. Step up from 500 mg.

- **One large dose.** Split the daily amount across meals.

- **Going past 1,500 mg without advice.** Most trials stayed at or below it, and Examine's top figure of 2,000 mg is a range, not a target.

- **Doubling up products.** Berberine turns up in blends and stacks. Add up the berberine from everything you take.

- **Swapping a prescribed medicine for berberine.** Never stop or change a prescription without your doctor.

## Berberine and Medication Interactions

Berberine changes how the liver handles some medicines. In a study of healthy men who took 300 mg three times a day for two weeks, berberine lowered the activity of three drug-processing enzymes, CYP2D6, CYP2C9 and CYP3A4. Blood levels of midazolam, a test medicine cleared by CYP3A4, rose by 40%. Many common medicines are cleared by these enzymes.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking berberine if you take:

- any medicine that lowers blood glucose, including insulin, because the effects can add together and push blood sugar too low

- ciclosporin, because in a trial where 52 transplant patients took 200 mg of berberine three times a day for 3 months, their ciclosporin blood levels ended 29.3% higher than in 52 patients not taking it

- any medicine your pharmacist tells you is cleared by CYP3A4, CYP2D6 or CYP2C9

- any other regular prescription medicine

Do not take berberine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The Wagner and Caruso's labels say it is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women, and the labels give adult directions only. Our guide to [berberine drug interactions](https://eternalelixir.com.au/berberine-drug-interactions-australia/) covers each group of medicines, and our article on [berberine side effects](https://eternalelixir.com.au/berberine-side-effects-australia/) covers what the trials recorded.

## Berberine Dosage FAQ

### How much berberine should I take per day?

Most trials used 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day, split into 500 mg doses with meals, and a review of 18 trials covered 900 to 1,500 mg a day. Start with 500 mg once a day and add a dose after a week if your stomach is fine. Check with your doctor before going above 1,000 mg, or before starting at all if you take any medicine.

### Can I take berberine once a day?

Yes, and 500 mg once a day with a meal is a sensible start. The trials split their doses across the day, so if you move to 1,000 mg or more, take it as separate doses with different meals rather than all at once.

### Should I take berberine before or after meals?

With a meal or shortly after. Examine recommends it, most labels sold in Australia say it, and food makes stomach upset less likely. Our own label says an empty stomach, so if that doesn't suit you, take the capsule with a meal, as Examine advises.

### How long should I take berberine?

The main trials ran 3 to 4 months, and the review's trials ran 4 to 24 weeks. Give it at least 12 weeks before you judge it. Longer use has less trial data, so review it with your doctor if you plan to keep going.

### How long does berberine take to work?

Glucose measures moved from the first week in one trial, but HbA1c and cholesterol were checked at 3 months. Expect to wait about 12 weeks for a fair read, ideally with blood tests before and after.

### Is 1,500 mg of berberine too much?

1,500 mg a day, split into three doses, is the upper end of what most trials used, and it brought more gut side effects: 34.5% of patients in the 1,500 mg trial had short-lived gut symptoms. Build up to it slowly, and only go there with your doctor's agreement.

### Do women need a different berberine dose?

Possibly. In a 2025 study of 44 healthy adults given the same single 1,000 mg dose, women had 2.8 times the blood exposure of men. The volunteers were chosen for particular gene types, and the authors say the sex effect may be overestimated, but it's a good reason for women to start at 500 mg and step up slowly.
[ee_btn slug="berberine-capsules" label="Start with 500mg: add to cart" block="qa" style="ghost"]

### What is the best berberine supplement in Australia?

Our pick is Eternal Elixir Berberine HCl 500mg: 500 mg berberine HCl per capsule, 90 capsules a bottle, $0.56 per 500 mg, sent from Sydney within 24 hours. Each capsule is one 500 mg step, which suits the slow start the trials and labels point to. Eternal Elixir makes it, so weigh that when you read our pick. If lowest price per 500 mg matters most, Wagner Berberine 500 at Chemist Warehouse costs less.
[ee_btn slug="berberine-capsules" label="Shop Berberine HCl 500mg" block="qa" style="primary"]

## The Bottom Line

Human trials used 900 to 1,500 mg of berberine a day, most often 500 mg two or three times a day, for 3 to 4 months. Start with 500 mg once a day, and take more or split the dose only if your doctor directs it, especially if you take any medicine. Our Berberine HCl 500mg gives you 500 mg in each capsule, 90 capsules to a bottle.
